Whats happening to Movellas with Article 13? @[Adison]

It's that new EU law that makes certain types of content illegal, regardless of fair use, and website hosts are liable for all of the content. For profit fanfiction websites are supposed to go against it, and YouTube has said it will be blocking a lot of its content to the EU because otherwise it would be liable. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Directive_.. I don't see how Movellas could exist at all with this unless it moves headquarters and blocks any EU country from seeing the content, because most of the content on Movellas (images in the blogs, memes in mumbles, covers on stories, and fanfictions) seem to come under it, regardless of whether it's transformative or comes under fair use. Non-profit fanfiction websites are assumed to be exempt, but I don't know how true that is.

Philip Defranco has some really good videos about it, and there's also this: https://youtube-creators.googleblog.com/..

"However, this creator economy is under threat from a section of the EU’s efforts to revise its copyright directive, known as article 13, which holds internet companies directly responsible for any copyright infringement in the content shared on their platform."

It's just the EUCD has different ideas on what counts as copyright infringement (it really ignores fair use), and Movellas would count as an "internet company" as far as I'm aware.

Also, my Movellas email address is still active (sanguine@movellas.com), but my internship ended nearly two years ago. Thought I would mention that, in case you need the space for any new employees :)

"Covers and trailers must use resources licensed under CC0, or Public Domain."

Are fonts still being counted within this? Because font licenses are generally different (usually under personal use where you have to buy a license for full usage, or commercial use).

Also, should we list our resources so you are aware that our entries are certainly CCO?

^^ Exactly - how can Movellas create rules, but not enforce them? They might as well not exist at all. And these rules aren't clearly defined within the competition page, they're on a separate link, and that link doesn't even mention fonts, just images, so people don't know.

It's actually really hard to track this font-copyright issue. We do enforce the guidelines and other rules created but mistakes happen in spite of this. I like the idea of a resources link in the STORY COMMENT for easy clicking and checking @[NathanielStanley], that would at least help. Either way we need to be better at communicating what fonts are included in the CC0 policy moving forward so we'll work to amend the separate link/document you mentioned @[Sanguine] to include some of this font information along with the images for covers.

The thing is, if the part in the ts&cs where it says you own the rights to our stories is removed, a CC0 wouldn't be needed at all for book covers - we could use the resources we own, or even illegal things. But right now, all content on Movellas that uses illegal resources (including fanfictions) isn't legal.

I'm not sure I like how the covers should be related to an entry - covers are about communication, and it is difficult to communicate if you don't like the entries, and writing a story just to enter a cover eliminates a lot of people. Definitely prefer how it used to be.

I know, right? :( I wish we could just do something a independent cover or something.

This won't be the case in every upcoming competition @[Sanguine] but I can see your concerns. We often try new things in between how "it used to be" when it comes to entering covers in competitions. Either way, I hope to see your covers maybe in some of the upcoming competitions, if not this one :)

    mumbled "Making Covers"

Would you guys like me to write cover making blogs, and do speed arts of some covers and banners? I've got a couple recorded, but they should be fairly quick edits, and I think I have one completely done, so that should be good.

    What do you think?

    It could be very useful!

Very useful if it's using a program that's readily available to those who want to make their own covers. If you use free software then movelians can try themselves. It would be really good if you could do a user guide using some of the web based sites :)

Speed art would be in Photoshop, but blogs would be on theory, not practice :)

So, after finishing what there is of the Arrowverse, I started on Prison Break, and I was wondering if anyone else can see Dominic Purcell and Wentworth Miller as George Milton and Lennie Small from Of Mice and Men, because I totally see it.
