2. Part 1, Chapter 2

Detective Olivia Short hastily unlocked the room door and sped out into the hallway, bumping into Officer Garcia.
"Garcia, who the hell is this kid?" Detective Short hissed. "He's sitting in that damn room, interrogating me like I did something wrong."
"Calm down, Short," Officer Garcia replied. "Obviously, this kid thinks he can get to you, and right now, you're letting him. Just ignore the questions he has for you and ask your own."
Detective Short sighed, patting her stomach.
"Look, Olivia, i've dealt with kids like him before . They just want to get into your head to confuse you. But I promise you, all you need to do is sit up straight, look 'em in the eye, and say, "Listen here. I'm the boss, and you're the employee. I'm the dog, and you're the cat. I'm the sun, and you're the dirt."
"I'm the sun, and you're the dirt," She repeated. She turned back towards the hallway of the room that held Douglas Brown. "Okay. I think I got it." She marched into the hallway.
"Oh, Olivia?"
She turned around. "You need this. You're sweating bullets." He tossed her a water bottle.
When she walked back into the room, Douglas was bobbing his leg up and down, like he had somewhere to be and he was late. Detective Short slammed the water bottle on the desk. He didn't even blink.
"Now listen here, kid," she snapped, lowering herself down on the chair. "I've delt with kids like you before." Sit up straight, look 'em in the eye. "I know you just want to get in my head. But let me tell you something. I'm the boss, you're the employee. I'm the dog, and you're the cat. Goddammit, I'm the--"
"--You're the Sun and I'm the dirt." Douglas finished, picking at his nails. "I know, I know. These walls aren't very thick, ya know."
Detective Short was fuming. Who does this kid think he is?
"On November 7th, 1999, a woman by the name of Ellis Washington was found murdered in a farmer named Cooper Macdonald's field. Your fingerprints were found on her neck, her boots, and her--"
"You forgot to turn on the recorder, Detective?"
Detective Short quickly blushed and cleared her throat. She tapped the record button.
"On November 7th, 1999," she repeated. "A woman by the name Ellis Washington was found murdered in a farmer named Cooper Macdonald's field. Your fingerprints were found on her neck, her boots, and her wrists."
"Here's a good idea. Why don't you let me go, grab ol' Cooper Macdonald and interrogate him."
"We have, of course, interrogated Mr. Macdonald."
"And what did he say?"
"We aren't allowed to share that information with you, Mr. Brown."
A small tune escaped from his chapped lips.
"Can you tell the recorder what you're whistling, Mr. Brown?"
"Ol' Macdonald had a farm..."
"Mr. brown, beside her body--"
"Ee-i-ee-i-oh...."
"--We found a 9 inch kitchen knife--"
"And on this farm he had a wife..."
"--On the knife was both you and Mrs. Washington's' blood. Can--"
"Ee-i-ee-i-oh..."
"--You explain how--"
"With some screaming here, and some stabbing there, here a stab, there a stab, everywhere a stab, stab, Ol' Macdonald had a farm, then it was no more."
"--Can you explain how your blood got on the knife, Mr. Brown?"
Silence.
"The bitch grabbed the knife from me and sliced the back of my neck. Wasn't enough to make me bleed out, though." Laughter.
"What's so funny?"
"And on this farm he had a dog..."
