1. Learning to count - degree by degrere

She sat on her mother’s lap, so innocent in her appearance. Yet, she too belonged to a barbaric race, responsible for so much destruction and catastrophe. And the worst is yet to come. They took us down this path, and now there is no stopping it. The end of the world is near. And the only one to blame is her and her idiotic breed. Yes, she was indeed a human…

She was ignorant to the awaiting terror. She was oblivious and naive, and that was the only possibility, if chasing happiness. The entirety of the older generations were far beyond that point, condemned by knowledge, and all they could do, was protect their youngest from enduring the same. A death sentence was hanging over their heads, above the sky-high tower blocks and never-ending industrial factories. Completely unaffected by the technology, which allowed men to lean back, as machines carried out what was once their job. A spiral of trivial pleasantries and non-existing handiwork.

The mother drew fourth a book, small in its simplicity and rare in its existence. You see, this adult knew, that she could not tell her child, her dearest possession, the harsh truth in her own words, but could not let stay uninformed either, for then how do we learn? So she would tell her the story of their world's destruction. The truth, banned by governments. Wrapped up in rhymes and pretty words, she could tell her child the story. Maybe this girl would hate her for taking away her future, or maybe, hopefully, this little girl will learn, though no one else seems to have, that life is precious. You must savour every little bit of beauty and happiness. You must laugh and appreciate the wonders that are still around us. The mother could not let her child waste her life. She could not let her believe, she has all the time in the world. Because she has not! So she must learn to value every second left! And how will she do that, you might wonder? Well... By simply teaching her how to count.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5 and 6.

“Listen darling, and I will teach you to count”, the woman said playfully, yet with a look of sorrow in her eyes.

“What is that?”, the little girl - six years old - inquired curiously, as she pointed towards the strange object in her mother’s hand. “This is a book, my love. People used to read in these.

She caressed the book’s cover gently, as though it was a fragile baby left in her care. The girl only nodded and settled herself more comfortably. And so, the mother opened the book and began reading aloud the words printed inside the book: “Learn to count - degree by degree”.

1
When the average temperature of the world had risen by 1 degree,
from the comparison year of 1780,
The ocean ate greedily of the coastal areas
Insatiable it left the world in horror and hysteria
Islands were swallowed whole
Lost to the sea were soul by soul
And Antarctic sent huge amounts of seawater each year
As it melted, dear oh dear!

But what then did they do,
When they saw the world crumbling beneath their shoes?
They said: “We have to do something!”
But they just did nothing…

2
When the average temperature of the world har risen by 2 degrees,
from the comparison year of 1780,
Real panic and fear started to rise
Longer and warmer heatwaves took life upon life
But still we kept burning the rest of our fossil fuels
We clung to them, as if they were the crown jewels
Also the polar bear went extinct
This left in the minds of man only a small imprint

But what then did they do,
When they saw the world crumbling beneath their shoes?
They said: “Now we have to do something!”
But still they kept doing nothing…

3
When the average temperature of the world har risen by 3 degrees,
from the comparison year of 1780,
The Amazon rainforest desiccated
That meant death to millions of plants and animals estimated
Still they had not found a great sustainable source of energy
This put the whole sector of economy and technology in jeopardy
And Australia became the driest country in the world
And so the horrors caused by mankind so fourth unfurled

Then what did they do,
When they saw the world crumbling beneath their shoes?
They said: “We really ought to do something!”
But they just kept doing nothing…

4
When the average temperature of the world har risen by 4 degrees,
from the comparison year of 1780,
Bangladesh lost more than 30% of their land
This left millions with no home and nothing further planned
70% of summer rain never came in Southern Europe
Heatwaves increased, and the world ran out of non-synthetic syrup
Catastrophic forest fires reached the Alps
And all they did was scratch their scalpes

Now what did they do,
When they saw the world crumbling beneath their shoes?
They said: “We really need to do something!”
They just kept doing nothing…

5
When the average temperature of the world har risen by 5 degrees,
from the comparison year of 1780,
By then the food became more than scarce
The situation could hardly become much worse
That was what they thought and still think
The few of us that still live, though on the brink
We know the end is near, too near
We have destroyed the beauty, that was once to us dear

So what do we do,
We see the world crumbling beneath our shoes!
We say: “There is nothing we can do!”
We had a chance, but that we blew…

6
If the average temperature of the world rises yet another degree,
from the comparison year of 1780,
There will be no beauty, no nothing left
Then it will finally be too late
And this future is inevitable
And it will come sooner than preferable
Maybe 1 year, maybe 2, maybe more
In 2100 at the latest, so no more than 24

So what can they do,
When they see the world crumbling beneath their shoes?
They can do nothing, because there will be no one left to do it
The world will be no longer fit for humans to inhabit…

Congrats, you have now learned ‘till 6 to count.
You will need to count no further

Put together this is how they sound

One, and islands were lost to sea
Two, and people sensed upcoming catastrophe
Three, and the Amazon died tree by tree
Four, and rain ceased and heat increased
Five, and food in general ceased
Six… and then there will be nothing left to fix
