Malika

Alexandria, Egypt

December 17, 2009

11:45 AM

Malika left Farah’s office thinking about the box. She was trying hard to remember if she ordered anything; she had an eidetic memory, it was unusual for her not remembering things. Her shift already started, but she decided to drive to her house to get the box first. It took her about thirty minutes to arrive. She called her maid to get her the box. She waited next to her car outside the house main door.

“Here it is.”

“Who ordered it? Did the delivery man say anything?”

She took the box and put it on the car’s top.

“No, he just gave me this letter.” the maid gave Malika the letter and left.

She opened the box using her keys and found a small sized sticker on the inside with the address of the sender; it was sent from Seoul, and the date was two days ago.

“Seoul? Maybe Noah?” Malika said.

She opened the letter first, a blank paper with only one sentence; Mend Reality.

“What?”

She put the letter away and looked at the box, it was a small size box. There were about thirty papyruses with hieroglyphics texts. It looked like as if it was telling a story. The first one she saw caught her attention. On the right side was a drawing of an ancient Egyptian man with a green frog-headed man, sun symbol above his head and next to him an Egyptian Bennu bird with a water pot above its head, on the left side were three columns of hieroglyphics written inside Cartouche. Malika was familiar with hieroglyph. She started to translate it.

“That’s creepy.”

Malika read all the papyruses and then a shiny light reflected from the box hit her eyes. It was a green amethyst oval quartz gemstone necklace with clear silver chain. The hard quartz cut her finger when she touched it and her blood ran over the chain.

8:30 PM

“Malika, wake up!” Layla’s voice was soft and calming as usual.

Malika opened her eyes; she was in her bed and it was dark outside.

“Mama! What … What?!”

Malika was confused about how she got to her room. She felt sudden pain from the back of her head as if someone hit her.

“It’s 8:30 PM, you’re late,” Layla said while turning on the lights and headed outside the room.

“No! It’s 11:45 AM! How did I come here?” Malika got up and walked behind her mother.

“Honey go change your Scrubs.” Layla smiled and touched Malika’s silky hair.

“How!!” Malika whispered to herself.

Layla went downstairs to her husband while Malika was standing in front of her room freaking out. Her phone ranged it was Farah. She went back; the phone was on a chair next to a big wooden cheval mirror.

“Where are you?!”

“Farah…” she sounded scared.

“What’s wrong?!”

“I don’t know… I…”

Malika stopped talking suddenly, she looked at herself in the mirror. She was wearing the gemstone necklace and her blood from the cut turned into a red metal merged with the silver chain.

“Malika are you still sleeping?! I’ve been waiting for an hour in the café! Are you coming or not?!”

“Coming…” Malika ended the call and looked at herself terrified.

She remembered the box and called the maid.

“Can you get me the box next to my car?”

“What box?”

“The box that you gave me this morning; the one that came in the mail today.”

“But nothing came in the mail and you didn’t come home until 7 PM.”

“But…how… I came home at 11:45 AM?!”

The maid looked confused from Malika’s terrified face reaction, she left the room while Malika looked at herself in the mirror.

“What the hell happened to me!?”

Malika changed her scrubs and looked for her bag; she found it on the floor next to her bed. She noticed the papyrus were inside it. She took it and went immediately to the garage heading to the café.

9:00 PM

Farah was sitting in their favorite spot. The café was owned by Malika’s best friend. Malika arrived at the café looking nervous; she told the waiter to get her usual coffee as fast as possible and headed to Farah.

“Finally!” Farah was holding her phone.

“Something happened to me!”

“Huh?!”

“I don’t know exactly; I don’t remember anything… I’m scared.”

Malika was shaking her legs nervously.

“What do you mean?!”

Farah took her chair closer to the table and reached to hold Malika’s shaking hand. Malika told Farah what happened after she left the office.

“The moment I touched it and cut my finger, I found myself in my room hours later.”

“You’re kidding, right?!” Farah left Malika’s hand and laughed.

“I swear I’m not kidding!!” Malika hit the table hard.

“Be realistic! how you blacked out and magically find yourself somewhere else hours later?”

“I don’t know what happened, the crazy thing that the maid told me that I never came home at the first place.”

The waiter served Malika’s coffee.

“Yeah, you were at the hospital, you called me to meet you here!” Farah looked at her with curious eyes. “You do drugs?” Farah looked directly at Malika’s eyes without blinking.

“Really Farah!! It’s not a fucking joke.” Malika took a sip of her coffee and looked away.

“It is a joke! Aren’t you hearing yourself?!”

“I told you I don’t know what happened it was like my mind was turned off.”

“Mal, what happened was that you left my office heading to the hospital and you called me at 6:30 PM telling me to meet you here.”

“No!! I didn’t go to the hospital and I didn’t call you!! I don’t remember any of this! I’m losing my mind.”

Malika noticed Farah trying not to laugh.

“Shut up Farah!”

“I didn’t say anything!”

Malika took off the necklace and looked deeply at it.

“What’s up with the necklace?”

“I don’t know it has a weird vibe, what happened is related to this necklace somehow.”

Farah took it from Malika’s hand and looked at it, her face reaction changed to a stable one as if she remembered something.

“I saw this necklace before.”

“Really?!”

“Yeah, it looks familiar I guess I saw an actress have a similar one, but I don’t remember her name…”

Malika took the necklace angrily from Farah’s hand.

“I swear I saw it before!”

Farah sounded like she was joking but she did saw the necklace before, she looked at Malika, but she was looking at the necklace unblinking.

“Hey!” Farah waved close to Malika’s face.

“I don’t forget things, I never do.”

“You don’t remember any childhood memories together maybe you do forget things.”

“I’m positive that someone sends them in the mail to me, someone from Seoul.”

“Seoul?! Noah?”

“No…I don’t think so.”

“Call him and ask.”

Malika took Farah’s phone and called Noah even though she had a feeling that it had nothing to do with him.

“Hey, Noah it's Malika.”

“Mal, how are you?”

“I’m okay, you?”

“Good.”

“Noah, did you mail me a box from Seoul?”

“What box?” he sounded surprised.

“A box was sent to me in the mail this morning from Seoul but with no information about the sender.”

“I haven’t been to Seoul for like four months and I’m positive I didn’t send you anything.”

“Then who is it?”

“Maybe your friends who live there?”

“They left Korea like a year ago.”

Malika talked to Noah for about seven minutes and they both ended the call with goodbyes after giving each other their phone numbers.

“So not him?”

“No… something isn’t right.”

“What is?”

“Why this person would send me papyruses and a gemstone necklace?”

“Perhaps it means something.”

Malika couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing; she was pretty sure that her mind is blocking a memory from her.

“I’m hungry, I’ll order food; want anything?”

Malika didn’t reply; she kept staring at the necklace.

“Mal?... Okay, I will order for you.”

Farah called the waiter and ordered two Carbonara dishes and chicken Caesar salad.

“So, tell me what happened in Dubai?” Malika was trying to get her mind to stop overthinking.

“Nothing happened,” Farah said and smiled.

12:10 AM

Farah rode the car and told Samir to drive to the airport. The whole city was quiet; it took them twenty minutes to arrive.

“Are you waiting for someone?”

“No, I’m the one traveling.”

“Really, you weren’t joking?”

“Well No, can you wait? I will go inside to get something first.”

Farah went inside the airport and ordered a cup of black tea, she went to the car and gave it to Samir.

“I knew that it’s your tea time so hope you like it.”

“Is it a black tea?”

Farah smiled; Samir worked for Malika’s family shortly after Farah’s accident eight years ago. No one knew anything about his past. He was a quiet man with a caring attitude.

“Yes, it is, tell Malika not to call me, I will turn off my phone for a while.”

Samir shook his head yes and reached to take the cup of the tea from Farah’s hand. Farah looked at his hand and noticed a tattoo on his right wrist.

“Wait! You have a tattoo?!”

Samir Smiled.

“Yes.”

“What is it?”

“It means infinity.”

“That deep! When did you get it?”

Samir was a Nubian man in his late forties. He didn’t look like a person who would get a tattoo.

“Many years ago.”

“I’m curious to know the story, you’ll tell me when I get back.”

“Sure.”

Farah went back to the airport and booked the next flight to Dubai.

12:45 AM

Farah was about to turn off her phone, but it ranged. It was Malika.

“Are you fucking kidding me?!”

“What?”

“You’re really heading to Dubai!”

“Yeah, I already told you.”

“Bitch.”

“I don’t understand why you’re angry?”

“I’m worried sick here and you’re heading to Dubai!”

“Malika, I don't have the energy to argue with you right now.”

Farah’s tone sounded like she was about to end the call.

“Don’t you dare to hang up on me!!?”

“Stop overreacting and I won’t.”

“Fine, call me when you land.”

“Bye Malika!”

Farah turned her phone off and then ordered a bottle of fresh mango juice.

1:45 AM

The whole four hours flight; Farah couldn’t sleep for not even one minute, all she could think about was her pain. She was breathing heavily and wanting to cry hard that it almost felt like someone was shattering her heart. An old painful feeling resurfaced; a wound she thought Adam’s love would heal it, but he made the pain deeper with his lies. The four hours flight felt so slow to her, it felt like a decade of emotions and memories of the past eight years rushing back to her and stabbing a weapon into her heart.

5:55 AM

Farah turned on her phone and called Noah, He was sleeping, and she woke him up.

“I’m at the airport.”

“What…” He said in a sleepy voice.

“I’m taking a car right now meet me in twenty-five minutes.”

“No worries…”

Noah was very tired that day; his flight from Sydney to Dubai took about fifteen hours and he didn’t get much sleep, yet his curiosity to know what happened to Farah get him out of bed.

6:30 AM

Noah was already waiting for Farah for ten minutes, he was standing on the sand looking at the beautiful sunrise. A sound of a heavily breathing behind him. It was Farah.

“Noah.” Farah’s voice was shaking and sounded like she was crying.

Noah turned his back to find Farah’s tears burst forth like water from a dam, her cheeks and ears were hot red. He went closer to hug her. She sobbed into his chiseled chest unceasingly. He held her in silence. Tapping on her back slowly as her tears soaked his shirt. Her pain had come in waves, minutes of sobbing broken apart by short pauses for recovering breaths. Her heart was broken, she didn’t feel or hear anything but her heartbeats loud and clear. Her hands were clenched hard that Noah couldn’t help but hugging her tighter hoping she would calm down and stop crying.

6:50 AM

Farah and Noah were setting on the sand looking at the sea in a complete silence. Noah gave her a bottle of water. She took it and smiled back at him.

“What happened?”

“A lot.”

“I’m all ears.”

Farah told Noah what happened with Adam in details.

“You know what Adam did; He just made me realize another wound.”

“Another one?”

“My Family, you know when your parents don’t care, every day they gave me the feeling that I don’t belong to them, I’m not their favorite child, I’m not even loved, I don’t remember my mom hugging me even once nor my dad; they never told me they love me, but they always tell my brothers.” She smiled “Dad blamed me for what happened, he said it’s my fault because I’m the one who chose Adam, and mom blamed me on how I didn’t see it coming, no one asked how I was feeling. I guess being the only girl in this family didn’t give me any chance to be spoiled.” She wiped a couple of tears on her cheeks and continued.

“I tried to feel loved and valued; I did everything they want just to get their attention, but it wasn’t enough. When Adam became a part of my life. He made me feel safe and comfortable and the moment I knew even that was fake I couldn’t hold it any longer.”

Noah held her hands and smiled at her; He had the type of face and body that makes any woman weak at the knees, he had a strong defined diamond face with attractive chin dimple, stubble beard, mesmerizing brown eyes, and thick flat black eyebrows with a little arch. He had a well-defined nose and sharp full lips. He had a beautiful thick black tousled medium length hair that gave him a fresh young vibe. He was 6’2’’ with a body of a professional athlete. Farah took another sip of water; she was thirsty as if all her tears made her dehydrated. She was calmer; finally breathing normally.

“I don’t know what to tell you; I never thought you were in such pain.”

“Me neither, I guess I needed to talk before I explode and don’t tell Malika I cried.”

“Why not?”

“I don’t cry in front of people.”

“But you cried in front of me.”

“I don’t know why! I guess I feel too comfortable with you.”

“Of course, you do, all women do.”

“Right.” Farah gave him a derisive look.

“Bloody oath!”

“Sure.”

“Are you saying I’m not attractive?”

“I didn’t mention anything about being attractive, I said ‘comfortable’.”

“Being comfortable is a part of being attractive.”

“No, it’s not.”

“All girls love when a man is passionate and listens to them.”

“That’s a different case.”

“How?!” Noah laughed.

They always had these types of arguments that turned to tease conversations.

“That happens when a woman is looking at a man.”

“What!!”

“What?” Farah smiled.

“You don’t see me as a man, all this rugged manhood isn’t enough, you hugged me tight back there and apparently, you enjoyed it.”

“I was crying; I could hug a sloth at that point! And I can see how attractive you are I’m not blind, but still doesn’t mean anything.”

“A lot of women wished to be in your place right now.”

“I know I’m a very lucky woman.”

“Why is it so hard for you to admit that you see me as a man?”

“I already did! And it’s not like you treat me as the most attractive woman on earth either to treat you like that.”

“You’re definitely attractive and I totally see you as a woman! That’s how good I am, you should be grateful.”

“Weird man.”

“You’re the one who’s weird for not seeing me as an attractive man.”

“Do you want me to flirt with you or something?”

“No, just admit the truth.”

“I did!” She took a deep breath and rolled her eyes.

“Fine! Noah, you’re an attractive annoying rugged man,” she said while holding his hand and looked deeply into his eyes.

Noah laughed; he loved to tease her to the point of losing her patience.

The waiter put the dishes hard on the table; it made Farah startled a little, she looked at Malika; she was distracted. It was hard for her to accept that it didn’t happen. It felt like a memory was taking away from her.
