Coming Home

He came home, and she knew hell would break loose...

6. Kissing Her

She walked off and left me sitting there after pouring my heart out to her. I watched her walk away and put my face in my hands before looking up again and searching the crowd for her. I saw her fingering her keys and making her way to the parking lot where I saw her truck parked. I was looking around for someone to drive me home so I could go after her.

By the time I found a ride, she would’ve been home already and it had started raining so it was taking longer than I wanted it too. The rain however stopped no one from the party so I knew I would have her all to myself. I was here a little over 2 weeks, and I was not wasting any more time. I thanked my ride once I got home and ran to the house, looking all over for her and she was nowhere to be found. I sighed and made my way to the barn where I saw her with Bubba.

“That’s not fair.” I said, causing her to jump and look at me.

“Did you follow me home?”

“Yes, yes I fucking did because I’ve done nothing but respect your space and leave you be when you wanted me to shut up and go away and now you can’t pull this shit where you look at me the way you did when I was singing and how you looked at me when we were in Nashville the night I got here and tell me you don’t feel something too.”

“Fine what?”

“Just fine.” She turned and looked me right in the eyes but said nothing else. I hated when she did this; made me feel like I had to keep going because I wasn’t there, I wasn’t reaching her. Or if I was, she was putting up a wall and not letting me through no matter how much I tried.

“Drop the fucking wall, the act, and just tell me what you want. I want you, I’ve wanted you for kids and sure, I’ve only been here for 2 weeks but I’m not going to waste my summer chasing after you if you don’t even want me around.”

“Then don’t.” I groaned and turned around and took a few steps away before turning back around.

“You drive me fucking insane.” I snapped. She smirked and nodded.

“I know.”

“You think this is funny?!”

“I do. I think its funny watching you squirm when I dance, or how you stare at me in shock when I’m singing, or just how you think I’m not paying attention when you literally watch me do anything and everything. I think it’s funny how you made my life hell when I was a kid and now I find it funny how I’m making your life hell in a different way now that you’re home.”

“You think this is a joke?”

“Did I say I thought it was a joke?”

“No…” I said, getting frustrated all over again. She had the fucking damn pouty, smirk face she made even when she was kid and somehow always got what she wanted with that face, and it always made me so mad. “You…you fucking piss me off.”

“Good.” Bethany said, still standing there with her arms crossed.

“You know, fine. Fine, act like that. I’m done trying. I told you how I felt, I tried to do what you asked, and when I felt it was okay, we were okay, the moments we were, I tried to apologize and show you how I felt because I didn’t want to drop a bomb on you that apparently you already knew.”

“Okay.” Bethany shrugged and turned around and went back brushing Bubba. I stormed away, back into the rain, angry. I was halfway back to the house when I realized what she was doing. I turned around and started making my way back when I saw her locking up the barn for the night and as soon as the door clicked and she turned around I pinned her against the door.

“What do you think you’re doing?!” Bethany I felt snapped, pulling her arms from my grip.

“You, you fucking piss me off.” I said again.

“And again, I know.” She rolled her eyes but once her eyes landed on mine, I saw it. I grabbed her waisted and pulled her to me, kissing her hard. I held her by the waist with one arm while I had one hand on the back of her neck, keeping her close to me. I felt her melt into me and when I opened my eyes and let her go she just stood there, water dripping from her bangs onto her face and she never looked more perfect.

“I hate you.” She said, pulling me back to her, kissing me all over again. I pushed her back against the barn door, holding her there she her hands ran through my hair. We kept kissing before she finally pushed me away and rolled her eyes.

“That was fucking cliché as hell, and I still hate you.” She said before walking back to the house. I smiled and started laughing, knowing I wasn’t going to get any other reaction from her but I knew I had her; I knew she liked me back and it was only a matter of time before she would actually say it.

A few hours later, everyone slowly was making their way back home and showing up. Bethany was sitting up, locked in her room and I was in the bedroom playing video games. I knew I was smiling like an idiot but I wasn’t even trying to hide it because it was all I wanted, all I needed for as long as I could remember.

“Dude, you fucked.” Jake said when they walked into the room.

“The hell?!” Travis said, running at me, shoving me onto the floor. “That’s where you fucking disappeared to?!”

“Uh no, we did not but we did kiss…a lot.”

“Damnit…I was hoping you got that ass.” Tommy said, laughing.

“Get me in with her sister.” Travis said.

“Dude, I’m not even in with her yet.” I said, rolling my eyes.

“How are you not?” Tommy said.

“Her ending statement to us making out was I hate you and she walked away. So I’ve done nothing more than get her to admit she likes me back; plus a little extra that she started.”

“I fucking can’t believe you.” Jake said, shaking his head.

“She started it?! Oh my god; why can’t Sam do this to me…” Travis groaned.

“I wouldn’t touch you if you were the last man on earth. But good going for you, Kane. Now you just actually have to win her over and not just suck on her face.” Sam said, appearing in our doorway.

“Wait what?” I asked, sitting up.

“I heard everything; but yeah, kissing my sister and actually winning her over are two different things entirely. She still hates you; like a lot. But like doesn’t all at the same time. I don’t know. But I do know her hatred for you is a hell of a lot stronger than her being willing to give you a chance.”

“Want to talk about it?” Sam asked, walking into my room and closing my door.

“What are you talking about?”

“I know you and Kane were making out behind the fucking barn. I heard them as I was walking upstairs.”

“Fucking idiots; don’t know how to close a fucking door.” I said, rolling my eyes.

“So what was it? Like just doing it because the moment weirdly felt right or did you actually admit that you liked him?” Sam asked, sitting on my bed.

“I think my words after we finished were I hate you so…”

“So it was all in the moment, 100%.”

“Not really. I kind of lied.”

“You lied? What? You couldn’t just say you liked him back?”

“Like would not have been the word coming out of my mouth…”

“Holy fuck, Bethany…this is worse than I thought. I mean we all figured at some point you and Kane would be like all at each other like this but god damn, not two weeks in, and we figured your stubborn ass would at least be honest!”

“Eh; it never happened starting tomorrow.”

“I can’t deal with you sometimes. Don’t waste your whole summer trying to get back at him. Actually try and enjoy this summer with him if that’s how you feel.”

“I’ll think about it.” I said, shrugging. “I’m still mad.”

“Well, let it go miss I just let Kane Brown suck on my face because I fucking like him, I’m just petty as hell.”

“Fuck off!” I yelled, throwing a book at her. She ducked and it hit the wall, making her laugh as the guys ran over, hearing the bang.

“Is all good in here?” Travis asked.

“Yeah, except I missed.” I said, staring at Sam.

“Get better aim.” Sam said, smirking at me and biting her lip. I flicked my knife out and Sam darted out of the room, still laughing.

“FUCK THAT; YOUR AIM IS BETTER WITH WEAPONS!” She screamed as she ran to her room. I giggled and put my knife back on my nightstand while the guys were still just standing in the doorway of my room.

“What? Are you guys lost?” I asked.

“Uh no; just kind of curious how I get your sister to do what you and Kane did.” Travis asked. I reached for the knife and threw it and it landed in the trim on the door, inches from Travis’s head.

“Don’t fucking talk about my sister like that.” I said, getting in his face as I pulled the knife from the trim and his eyes went wide. “Or next time, I won’t miss. But a small word of advice; pretend you care and just get her in a moment when the girl is vulnerable and just really is in one of those moods. It typically works best that way. That way, it’s no strings attached and you never need to revisit it. But also, don’t fucking touch my sister. Try it on like Stella. She thinks you’re hot too, for whatever reason.”

“Wait, how do I know if she’s in that mood?” Travis questioned.

“You see it in her eyes if you look hard enough.” I said. “Now excuse me.” I said pushing them out and closing my door but not before catching Kane’s stare and how hurt he looked. I stared right back at him until my door was totally closed and I sighed, leaning with my back against the door, and started crying, seeing the old pictures of me and Chase scattered all over my bed. I picked the book up again and threw it again, screaming.

“What was that about?” Tommy asked. “That was very detailed…”

“Wait a second…” Jake said, turning to me. “Did she just play you?”

“Dude, I’m so sorry…” Tommy said as we heard a loud scream and a thud again coming from Bethany’s room. This time Taylor came out of her room with Sam behind her and we all looked at each other.

“So…if no one is in there pissing her off, what is it?” Sam asked.

“Hey, why are we all in the hallway?” We turned to see Haylee and all gave her confused looks. “What, I got the 911 text and that normally she did something really dumb or she found some shit that she thought she got rid of that involves Chase; I’m going with the Chase thing since she didn’t do something dumb.” We all exchanged glances and Haylee started looking at all of us again.

“Uhm...” I choked.

“What did she do?” Haylee asked, groaning.

“Uh, we made out; does that count as something dumb?” I asked slowly.

“Hey! That’s not dumb; good for you by the way. I thought it would take you longer to get her to like do that shit but I mean shit, good for you!”

“Based off what she said a few minutes ago though…” Tommy said.

“Oh please, bitch is dramatic as fuck. She’s burning something so it has nothing to do with you.”

“How do you…oh fuck, that’s the smell of smoke!” Jake yelled. We all went running for Bethany’s room and her trash can was on fire and she was dropping shit into it while she had a bottle of whiskey next to her she was drinking straight.

“What is it?” Haylee asked.

“Did you know Chase used to be fucking normal?” Bethany stammered. Haylee looked over on Bethany’s lap and scoffed.

“Put those bitches in the fire.” Bethany shoved whatever it was off her lap into her trashcan and laid back.

“Whiskey is my one and only true love, besides you.”

“I know; we’re getting married soon anyway so soon this will all be over.” Haylee said, snuggling up to Bethany.

“Why is everyone back in my room?”

“Uh, we smelled smoke.” Taylor said.

“Cool; want to go in it too or do you want to leave?” She asked. We all quickly shut the door and went back to staring at each other in the hall again.

“So you guys did some stuff?” Taylor joked, smirking at me.

“Fuck off.” I said, rolling my eyes.

“I’m impressed.”

“Is nothing a secret in this town?” I groaned.

“No, nothing is a secret.” Sam said, smiling before her and Taylor walked back to Sam’s room.
