11. Chapter Ten

"Come in," Doctor Marquez's voice called. Piero opened the door and stepped into the dimly lit office

He had been called down to Doctor Marquez's office a few hours after Jeff's surgery. It couldn't be good considering Doctor Marquez's dislike of him.

"Sit." He ordered. Piero did as he was told, a bit nervous and waited for whatever was next.

"I was informed that you were a part of Doctor Gomez's surgery today?" He asked firmly, not lifting his gaze from the paperwork he was filling out.

Piero nodded. "Yes, I was. It turned out a success and Jeff is fi-"

"Unproffesional of you.. You're not supposed to get involved with patients that are not assigned to you. We are just their doctors Piero, not their friends. They can't get attached to us." He scolded.

"Why shouldn't they? We are all they have. When they're posted in a bed without hope of normality, we're the only hope they know. Why shouldn't they get attached?" Piero defended.

"I forbid you from dealing with any matters that have to do with Jeffrey Woods." Doctor Marquez demanded.

Piero stood, "I'm sorry but I can't do that. That little boy is more than just a patient of the hospital; I care about him and if you want to find fault with that then be my guest, but I am not backing away. I'm going to assist in anything I can and see it through his recovery." He walked out of the office, closing the door behind him.

"That man is incredibly stubborn." Mr. Chavez, vice president of the hospital said exasperated, stepping towards Marquez's desk.

"Not stubborn, he's just passionate." Doctor Marquez replied. "He cares about his patients and everyone around him."

Piero was furious. How dare they tell him not to care about a child. Especially a child he helped cure. Not with the surgery, that was Pablo, but he brought back his will to live by being there with him and showing him some love. When he first met Jeff, he had no energy or strength, he had given up on life, on doctors, and on his parents. He returned him the joy of life by just being with him, caring for him, listening. By giving him attention and love that he desperately needed.

"Why so angry?" Nayelli came up next to him and kept in stride with his fast pace.

"Doctor Marquez is infuriating . He thinks he can tell me who to care about." He said angrily.

Nayelli chuckled. "He doesn't want you not to care for Jeff, he's just worried that when he leaves you'll be too attached to let him go." She explained.

Piero stopped in his tracks and turned to face her.

"How could I not get attached to that little boy? He's alone and he has a beautiful soul. He's amazing and he does not deserve what has happened to him." Piero said, feeling bad all over again.

"You can't change what happened to him, it's part of life. You should be proud of yourself for being there for him in such a hard time and for mending the relationship with his parents." He smiled. "But, you know if he leaves, it will be devastating for you. And that's what James is trying to prevent."

"Who's side are you on anyway? That jerk just wants you for himself, that's why he's so damn protective over you." Piero grumbled. He knew he was being childish and that maybe James, Doctor Marquez, was right, but he was too stubborn to admit it to anyone but himself.

Nayelli laughed lightly. "Piero, do you know what's my last name?"

"Beautiful?" He said, smiling lovingly at her.

She giggled shaking her head.

"It's Marquez. James is my brother." Piero stared at her for a second, shocked, then gave her a goofy smile.

"I knew I always liked him. He has that "brother in law" charm to him." He said hugging her tightly while she laughed.
