The baker and the love note

As his crush grows bigger problems start to occur. When things don’t turn out his way will he keep trying to tell her how he really feels or just give up and always wonder if she ever felt the same way.

1. New chapter

I see her every day at exactly 9:00 am when she orders the same coffee and bagel. She sits at the same table in the far right corner and types away on her laptop for three hours. She probably doesn’t even know my name, but hers runs through my head every moment in the day. Megan. It’s the most beautiful word I have ever heard. Along with the way she looks at me with her ocean blue eyes and wavy brown hair. I have fallen in love with a customer who I have never actually met.

“Earth to Chris! You have been caught staring again, but will never get caught talking to her.”

“Shut up Brianna.”

My twin sister Brianna and I started C&B bakery two years ago after we finished college together. We both wanted to open up a store so we partnered up and did it together. Brianna makes fun of me for obsessing over Megan for a year and how I never have made a move to talk to her. I tried once, but ended up covered in frosting. I’m not going into details, but all I remember is the whole store laughing at me. Brianna and I are cleaning up the store after closing hours as the music plays softly from her phone on the counter.

“You should try to talk to her and tell her how in love you are.”

“We all know how well that worked out last time.”

“Still, you will never know how she feels unless you talk to her. Right now you are just the man who makes her coffee every week.”

I think about what Brianna said and decide to write her a note. I will put it into her order tomorrow and she can decide the next move. I spend hours thinking about what to write in the note. If I am to sappy she will think I’m coming off too strong, but on the other hand if I am too straight out she might think I’m trying too hard and get scared off. I decide to go for a walk to clear my head. The sun was setting and the sky is all shades of red to blue. I finally am inspired to write that note, so I run home and start writing. It takes me an hour to write it, but it is perfect by the time I finish. I finally go to bed feeling accomplished and anxious about the day to come.

It is morning at the bakery and I am filled with excitement. I don’t know why, but I am really happy. As I make a cake for a wedding tonight, Brianna walks in, curious to my sudden outbreak of excitement.

“What’s up with you today? You seem extra anxious about something.”

“Today is the day I’m going to tell her how I feel.”

“Wow. That’s a big step. You sure you’re ready for that?”

“Totally. I spent hours writing the perfect note I’m going to place in her order today when she comes in.”

“So you’re not actually going to talk to her?”

“Hey ease off. It’s the first step.”

“Ok. I’m not judging.”

Brianna walks out of the room like nothing happened. She made me a little more nervous, but I am still going to do it. It is happening today no matter what happens.

9:00 came and I am working behind the counter when she walks through the front door. My heart starts pounding the closer she gets to the desk. When she finally orders, I make her coffee and placed her bagel in the bag. I look for the note I know I put next to the counter but it isn’t there. I could see she is getting anxious so I had to give her the order without the note. I watch as she sits down and starts typing away. My mind is completely confused to where I might have put it. I trace back to everything I did when I got to the store and then it hit me. I run to the kitchen and look for the cake I was making this morning. When I see that the cake was gone I stand there shocked, not knowing what to do. I stare at the empty counter wondering what the groom and bride will do if they find that note in there cake. Brianna walks in the room to see me standing in the middle of the room, lost in space.

“Chris, are you alright?”

“What.. oh yeah. I mean everything is fine. Perfectly fine. Why would it be anything else.”

“What’s wrong?”

“Ok well you know that note I was suppose to give Megan? Well I lost it and went to look for it and it’s nowhere to be seen so I retraced my steps and I might have left it in the cake going off to the wedding tonight.”

Brianna stands there as shocked as I am. A few seconds pass of pure silence and no movement until Brianna runs to grab her keys and purse heading out the door.

“Are you coming or not.”

“Fine. Let’s go crash this wedding.”

We drive the thirty minutes to the reception and everyone is already there. The delivery truck just finishes up setting up and there is the cake, standing on the dessert table. Brianna starts walking towards it, but stops when she hears the bride and groom announce that they will be cutting the cake. She runs back to me behind a tree. We argue about what to do and then there is a silence among the crowd as the groom points us out motioning for us to join them. The bride cuts the cake finding a piece of paper sticking out of it.

“Honey what is this?”

“I don’t know.”

The husband glares at us as she uses the knife to dig it out, unwraps it and reads the love note meant for someone else. The three of us watch and hold our breath to see how she will take it. It can go two ways and I’m hoping it is good. The bride starts crying and holds the letter to her heart.

“Mike I never knew you were so romantic. I love the letter. And I love you even more.”

She wraps her arms around Mike kissing him passionately. Everyone starts clapping and I finally could breathe again. Brianna and I start to leave out the back door until Mike the groom stops us.

“Wait, thank you for what you did. I didn’t know that was part of the deal? Do you do that with everyone?”

“ umm only people we truly appreciate and believe will have a long lasting life together.”

“It was beautiful and my wife sure did love it.”

He ran back to the party as we went back to the car. As soon as we got in the car we bursted into laughter.

“What just happened!!”

“ I don’t know, but whatever you wrote totally gave us a good review from those guys. What did you even write anyway?”

I handed her my phone with the final copy on it.

“That is the most romantic thing I have ever heard. I can’t believe you wrote this for her.”

“Well she will never be able to hear it anyway so what was the point.”

Brianna took a sharp turn and headed towards the park. I was so confused until I saw her sitting on a bench by herself staring at the sunset.

“How did..”

“Lucky guess. I saw her here the last two nights and thought.. what the heck. Now go get your girl.”

I stare out the window just looking at her, wondering how I would approach this. As I take a deep breath I get out of the car and walk towards the bench.

“Mind if I sit here?”

It was total silence and I knew I needed to say something.

“Watching the sunset reminds me of all the good things that happen in life. Even if they were not planned that way.”

“I come down here everyday and watch the sunset. It inspires me to write, everything that happens throughout the day will be washed away at the end of the day as the sun goes down the night begins. Hey, You’re that guy from C&B bakery, Chris right?”

“yeah and you are that girl that comes in everyday, ordering the same thing and sitting in the same place. Megan.”

She smiles and looks back at the sky as the sun disappears behind the horizon. I like her more than ever when I start talking to her. I knew I couldn’t let her go this easy.

“You know, I came down here the other day and was inspired to write a little note for someone I know.”

“Really. Do you want to run it by me? I would love to hear it.”

I just stare at her for a second thinking to myself if I was really going to go through with it. I’m going to do it. I take a deep breath and recite the letter staring into her eyes.

“I watch the sunset over the ocean and think of the sparkle in your eyes when you look at me and the way your hair waves perfectly in the breeze. You take my breath away and I hope you feel the same way when I say I can’t stop thinking about you. When you walked through those doors, you changed me. My love for you grows every time I see you and it will never stop.”

She looks away from me and stares at the ground with a smile on her face. My heart is pounding and I don’t know what to do so I look back over the water thinking of how she interpreted the note. She stands up and walks around the bench and my heart was about to break as I thought she was walking away. She puts her hands on my shoulder coming really close whispering in my ear.

“So. I’ll see you tomorrow then, with my original.”

Slowly releasing her hands she kisses me on the cheek and walks away, leaving me to sit there wondering what the next day will bring.
