CHAPTER THREE . . .

*Unedited . . .*

I was hesitant to get out of the car. I remain seated all the while contemplating ways to handle the situation awaiting us inside. Archie didn't look as if he was nervous. I would sweat like a pig had it been possible.

Eventually, I made myself got out of the car. I was about to say something when Archie interrupted.

"Go for a walk, Beau," he said, glancing over at me.

"No." I declined with a single shake of my head. "I can't let you go alone and take the blame."

"You don't understand." He stared at the house in front of us. "It doesn't matter if it was your idea. The fact is—I shouldn't have taken you because of the circumstance. Carine and the others will hold me accountable for your action."

I have heard many absurd things in my days, but this took the lead.

"But that's crazy!" I argued. "They can't hold you responsible."

"I will talk to them."

"It's my fault." I shook my head. "I shouldn't have asked you. I shouldn't have involved you."

"It was my choice to come. I knew Carine wouldn't approve and I took you anyway, so technically, I am partly to be blamed."

"What if she doesn't forgive your action?"

I couldn't remain in the family knowing their dislike was because of me. And if I couldn't stay, I would lose Edythe . . . the single most important person in my world. My heart broke just thinking about it. To not have her in my life was worse than death. How could I even live without her? Not possible!

"You're overreacting again." Archie looked as if he wanted to laugh. "You go and talk to Edythe, she's . . ."

"Upset?"

"Unclear . . ." He answered like he was seeing in the moment. "I see many ways your conversation with her could turn out. For what it's worth you're not dead in either of them."

"Good to know."

I sighed. I wouldn't feel anyway if Edythe was upset. I would gladly crumble to my feet before her and beg forgiveness like a slave to its master.

When I came out of my train of thoughts Archie was gone. I pondered what to do next. Should I see Edythe like Archie told me or just go for a walk while the family shared their thoughts on what Archie and I did? A walk seemed like a good idea, but I should really talk to Edythe . . . tell her I am sorry for what I did . . . for putting everyone she loves, herself included, in danger.
