33. Beyond the Night Road-Part Thirty-Three

Warsaw, Poland

January-February, 1973

8:33 AM.

Anna Christianson awoke from a fevered dream that the Third Reich was back. She had dismissed the thoughts; she was eager to believe that the Jews were freed from The Nazis. She wore her red nightgown...and black slippers on her feet; she gazed at the Grandfather clock that read: 8:34 AM. The early morning sun beat down on the glass windows of her apartment in the middle of Warsaw. It was small, but she lived in it for over two years. She heard the sound of knocking on her front door. Anna opened it, and saw Stavros Jacobson, the super, drinking a coffee. "Forgive me, Anna. But I have to manage the apartments, yes". She smiled, and let him inside. Stavros, who was fifty-one year's old, wore a white shirt, black, flared, jeans, red socks, and black shoes on his feet. Anna poured herself some Earl Grey tea, and ate some jam on toast for breakfast in the kitchen.

As Stavros went to work, Anna was prepared to speak to her contact, Richard Q, an Turkey-based Jew, who had lived in the country after the end of World War II, in nineteen forty-five. Anna finished her breakfast, and waited patiently for Stavros to finish. By ten-thirty AM, he smiled at her. "The pipes are new, and are free of corrosive rust; the yellow curtains are fixed up due to some holes in it. I've patched it up for now". Anna nodded. "Thank you, Stavros", she said. He placed the coffee cup in the sink in the kitchen. Then he opened the door, and headed upstairs to his own room, where he lived with his fifty year old wife, Deanne.
