Everything Has Changed

Two former friends with ten years that passed them by have found themselves back in each other's lives. Because all she knew that everything has changed.

1. Ten Years Later

There was nothing I dreamed about more than being with Harry Styles. He and I have been best friends for as long as I can remember with the earliest memory at five-years-old. He and I would be doing performances for our parents with the karaoke machine. I still think he's a better singer than I am. However, I had the better dance moves. We have always been inseparable since then.

We would celebrate each other's birthdays. There were instances in my life where I have only seen him as an older brother, except the older he became the cuter he got. Over the years, we knew secrets about each other that no one else knew about. Harry predates many of my friends, which meant that we had some serious history.

He was only seven months older than me, except he always had the upper hand. It has been 10 years since we have last seen or spoken with each other. I was 16 when he had decided to audition for the X Factor and moved on to become some famous singer of a boyband called One Direction.

Now at 26, I have moved on with my life. It was also at 16 that my parents had decided to make the big move from the UK to Los Angeles, California. Though, I prefer London. It was around the age of 18 when I had decided to move back to London to attend Uni. I was able to get a part job while living in the dorms. I graduated with a bachelor's degree in journalism.

I was in love with traveling, as well as writing. So, I figured I might as well do both. I was able to secure myself a job, a car, and have my own place. A week had passed since I arrived in London. For most of my life, London has been the one place I called home. While living in LA was fun, I did not consider it home because my friends weren't living here.

I received a call from my best friend, Eleanor Calder. She and I had gone to different Universities. Though, we managed to stay in touch over the years, especially when I moved away for two years. She asked me if I wanted to hang out with her and Sophia. Sophia Smith was our other friend. I needed some major catch up with my girls.

I had agreed and drove over to the mall after getting ready. The last time I had seen my friends was before I had moved away to LA at 16. "I'm glad you're back home. It's been too quiet here." Eleanor joked. I only rolled my eyes.

"More like we've been having way too much fun. We really missed you here." added Sophia.

"I missed you guys too. I'm here now, so let's talk about what I've missed." Before they could say anything, I noticed a couple pass our table from the corner of my eye. They were walking in the direction of the stores.

The man looked familiar to me with his brown hair styled in a certain way. Wait--"Angela, where are you going?" Eleanor called out after me. I had gotten up and was already following the couple. She was out of ear range by then. I kept my distance and followed the couple into one of the stores. I couldn't get a full view of the man's face. It was always side view.

I noticed the woman with him had picked out a few clothes and walk to the dressing rooms. At least now, I can get a good view. As soon as the thought left my mind, I didn't realize I had bumped into the mana by accident. I glanced up, only seeing green eyes. I had a hard time forming the words until I heard his girlfriend open the door to the dressing room. "Baby, how do you--who the hell are you?”

The woman had come out of the dressing room wearing a red dress that made her look very unflattering. "No one, and red is not your color." I said quickly before heading out of the store. I walked back to the table and joined my friends. While resuming my conversation with them, I couldn't stop thinking about who that man was and why he seemed familiar to me.

After spending the day with my friends, they talked about the high school reunion we were all invited to next Saturday. "Sophia and I are going with Louis and Liam." I had almost forgotten that they were still dating them. I thought by now they would have moved on to different people.

I'm really happy for my friends regardless of who they're with. It's been eight years since they've graduated. They asked me if I would be willing to join them for dinner tonight with the gang. I had agreed to go since I had no other plans to do anything tonight.

We all drove out to Nandos where we were meeting the others. Once getting out of my car, the first person I recognized was Liam. Liam Payne was a man I have not seen in 10 years. Liam had also auditioned for the X Factor, as well as Louis Tomlinson.

"California definitely looked good on you." Liam greeted me with a hug. "It's been so long." I returned the hug, only replying to him that I had spent most of my days at the beach.

"When did you move back to London?" Louis asked once I pulled away from the hug with Liam. Louis and I had gotten along almost immediately. While though three years older than me, he made it seem like we were the same age. "Just before I started Uni." I replied. Louis had given me a tights squeeze before pulling away. "Is this everyone?”

"No, we have two more people joining us." Liam said. "Let's head inside before they get full." We all agreed and headed inside Nandos. There were already three other people seated at the tables, whom I recognized as Niall Horan and Zayn Malik.

From what I had known, Zayn had left the band in 2015. Niall had arrived with a date, whom I recognized as Selena Gomez. Zayn had an open seat next to him. I remember when I had seen their concerts that Zayn was one of the members with the best voice, as well as looks. It was a bit of a surprise to me that he’s single for the time being, let alone in the same room as the former members of One Direction.

As soon as we were all seated and ordered our drinks, the remaining two people had arrived. It was the couple from earlier at the mall. The woman was tall, blonde with bright red lipstick. Selena had gotten up to greet the woman. I recognized the woman as none other than Taylor Swift.

Everyone else had stood up to greet the couple. I had reluctantly followed suit. “You’re the girl from earlier, aren’t you? The one who ran into my boyfriend.” Boyfriend? Now that I was able to get a closer view of the man. A name had popped into my mind, and my heart sank.

“Angela Michaels?” The man asked me. The man was none other than Harry Styles himself. He had grown up in the last 10 years, becoming more handsome than ever. His hair was still the same, though cut short than it was before. He had numerous tattoos along his left arm from what I could see. His buttoned up shirt was rolled half-way up his arm. I knew he had dated Taylor in the past. It was a surprise to me that they were together now, and in London.

Taylor turned to him and asked, “You know each other?”

“She was my neighbor.” said Harry. He ordered his drink and took his seat. Taylor followed suit, as did everyone else. I sat down in the seat next to Zayn since it was the only one left open. I hadn’t looked in his direction since. Just after dessert had been ordered, Taylor excused herself to go to the bathroom.

She asked Selena to join her, leaving me with everyone else. I wonder what she had against Eleanor and Sophia or what they had against her. I’m sure it was nothing. “Well, the gang’s all here.” Louis was hoping to lighten up the mood. Eleanor rolled her eyes. Zayn seemed to want to leave the restaurant, as did I.

Liam was starting to note the tension between myself and Harry, whom I haven’t spoken to since he entered the restaurant with Taylor. “Can we talk?” asked Harry. I told him that he had nothing to say to me. I told my friends that I couldn’t stay for dessert. I got up from my seat and headed outside.

I walked out to my car. As I opened the door, it was immediately closed. Harry had followed me outside. I couldn’t believe that this was happening. “What are you doing?” I faced him. I noticed that Zayn had exited the restaurant as well but maintaining his distance.

“You’re upset with me, and I think I know why. You’re still mad at me because we lost contact after my X Factor audition. Is that it? Since I became famous, you started to think I’m suddenly better than you? If you are, that was 10 years ago. One, you moved to California shortly after that. Two, I think I remember that I tried calling you with the news and found out you changed your number. Get over being upset with me.” Get over it? Was that the best he could say to me?

His green eyes were determined. I wasn’t falling for them this time. I was more than upset with me. It wasn’t that he just decided to audition and become famous. “We were both in London before my family made the move to California. I tried calling you many times. I wanted to see you one last time before I left. All you did was ignore my calls. I figured you didn’t want to come see me and say goodbye. You made your choice then, and I’m making mine now. I’m happy that you found someone. I’m glad that I’m not a part of your life anymore Harry.”

I watched Harry storm away towards Nandos. Zayn approached me and asked me if I was okay. I told him that I wasn’t. He offered to take me home. I handed him my keys and got in the car to begin the drive back to his flat.
