Everything Has Changed

Two former friends with ten years that passed them by have found themselves back in each other's lives. Because all she knew that everything has changed.

4. Last Minute Date

The morning after Harry had made breakfast. I had taken a quick shower and got dressed for the day. I had yet to decide on whether or not I should move into the house today. I decided against the idea and figured I should wait until I am ready. “You didn’t have to make me breakfast.” I said. He poured me a cup of coffee, which I had taken a liking to since being in California.

Harry smiled and said he wanted to, especially after his outburst the day before. He handed me the cup and I thanked him. He served me a plate when I sat down at the bar to eat my breakfast. “I didn’t mean to spring all of that on you. It happened to all come out. Usually you’re the first person I go to when I need to vent out all of my feelings.” said he.

I was appreciative of knowing that Harry did not want to lose contact with me. In fact, he seemed to be fighting for us to be in contact with each other again. I felt he should be discussing his feelings with Taylor rather than me since, after all, she is his girlfriend. “What are you doing Saturday?”

The question had caught me in the midst of drinking my coffee. I told him I was free. “Apparently Soph is celebrating her high school reunion this weekend. The guys are invited and El, too. I asked Taylor, except she had made plans to go with Selena instead. Since you’re free—“

“Yeah, I’ll be your date. I was invited regardless. I have a fear of showing up to these events alone anyway. There would be no better substitute other than me, right?” I interrupted.

“I wouldn’t say ‘substitute.’” Harry continued to eat, as did I. Once finished with our meals, I helped Harry clean up. I thanked him for the breakfast, again. Shortly after, I said I had to head out and meet up with a friend. Harry bid me goodbye without asking me about my so-called friend. I was out the door.

I arrived at the local coffee shop to see Zayn, who had texted me earlier this morning to ask if I wanted to have coffee. I couldn’t say no. However, this was before having breakfast and coffee with Harry. My visit with Zayn was brief, except well needed after the night we had when we had left the restaurant.

“You’re going to Soph’s high school reunion with Harry. I thought I was your date.” said Zayn.

“I know that, and my friends know that. Taylor’s going with Selena, and it’d be rude if Harry showed up without a date.”

“He can go by himself.” I knew Zayn wouldn’t be happy to hear that I was going to the reunion with Harry. He wasn’t exactly on the best terms with his former band mates since he departed from them in March 2015. I reassured him that I’ll make it up to him. “I can meet you afterwards.”

After the visit with Zayn, I drove back home. I hadn’t told Zayn about Harry buying my childhood home. In time, I’ll tell him. I saw that Harry’s car was still parked on the driveway. Why was he still here? I entered the house and saw that he had situated himself in the office. “What are you doing?” I asked him.

“Who’s the friend you met up with?

“I asked you first.” I crossed my arms over my chest, waiting for his answer. Harry picked up the envelope of the second stack. He stood up and handed it over to me. He said that I should keep reading the letters and that he’ll be seeing me soon. With that, he headed out of the office. I heard the front door open and close. I sat down in the office chair, envelope in my hand and opened it to read its contents.

July 18, 2012

It’s been nearly a year since we last spoke or even saw each other. I heard you’ll be starting Uni in the Fall. Congrats on graduating high school. I’m sure you’ve attended all your school dances with a date. Sadly, I regret not having been able to share a dance with you. As for me, the guys and I have been writing songs for our next album. We’ll be going on tour soon, so hopefully we’ll get to see each other before I go. To tell you the truth, I’m miserable. I hope you’re doing good, if not better than how I’m doing.

I’m sure you’ve seen hundreds of photos of me by now. It’s becoming easier to wish for a normal life. I’m enjoying the ride for now. These days I’m missing our daily talks. I’m not sure if you’ve changed your number. You probably did when you moved to California. It would make more sense because you’re not answering my calls or texts. Do you even have the same email? Or use it at least? I wonder if you’re still mad at me for what happened between us. I hate not knowing how you’re feeling. I hate that we’re not talking anymore.

Sorry to cut this letter short. Hope all is well. Miss you

I was halfway through the third stack and was about to open up an envelope dated October 13th when the doorbell rang. I hadn’t realized hours had passed. I had been reading Harry’s letters non-stop for the last three to four hours. I did manage to have breaks in-between and eat before resuming the reading. “Wow, he did buy your childhood home.” Eleanor, along with Nicole and the guys, had appeared at my door step. I rolled my eyes and stepped aside for them to enter.

“It’s different than I remembered.” Sophia pointed out. When they had stepped into the foyer, I had only realized the remnants of the vase had been swept clean. I assumed Harry had swept the floor this morning while I was taking a shower. “You haven’t been here in a while Soph.” I said.

“I was just here a few weeks ago. There was no furniture here.” Louis ran his hand against the sofa, getting a feel of its leather exterior. He sat down testing it out. I slightly shook my head. Eleanor chimed in by adding the fact that evening the dining room set was different too, as well as the kitchen had been entirely re-done. “When did you move in?” asked Niall.

“I did not move in. Harry came in here and renovated the house after he bought it.” I answered. I joined my friends in the living room. “Wait, how did you know I was here?”

“We saw Harry earlier and asked him. He said you might either be at your flat or here. You weren’t at your flat, so we figured you were here.” said Sophia. I nodded, only starting to become a bit anxious. I was afraid they would start to roam around the house and see the office with the stacks of letters Harry had written to me over the last 10 years.

Before anyone could say anything, Eleanor called out from down the hallway. It sounded like in the direction of the office. Everyone had walked in the direction of her voice. I reluctantly followed after. El had discovered the office, along with the stacks. “Ange, what’s all this?” asked she.

I was afraid she’d ask me that. I might as well tell everyone the truth. No one else had known about the letters, except for Harry and I. I wish he hadn’t brought them down to the office and left them up in the attic instead. “Those are… letters Harry had written to me over the last 10 years. He never bothered to send them I guess.” I answered.

“And you didn’t think about telling us?” Sophia turned to me. She sounded more concerned than upset, which I should have been more relieved about. They briefly looked through the ones that have already been opened. “Did he write to you every single day?”

“With what I’ve read so far, he has been pretty consistent. I should have told you guys about the letters. I know how you guys feel about his relationship. I don’t want you to think I’m still waiting for him to come right out and apologize to me. I’m not pining for him.” I crossed my arms over my chest.

“You’re definitely pining for him!” exclaimed Eleanor. “Ange, Harry has written a letter to you every single day for 10 years. Well, that’s what I’m assuming. I think he’s been pining for you too. This is evidence to prove he still cares about you. He probably saved all these letters in hopes you might understand what he’s been going through since you two stopped talking.”

“He’s with someone else El. I can’t be the one who breaks them up. I don’t want to be responsible for that. Harry asked me to be his date to the reunion on Saturday.” It would’ve had to brought up sooner or later. I still kept quiet about my original decision to go with Zayn.

“I didn’t think he was planning to go.” Louis said.

“He asked me because Taylor and Selena were planning to go together.”

My friends exchanged glances with each other. Did they know something I didn’t? “You know, there’s a rumor that Zayn’s going to be there too. Zayn and Taylor worked on a project together, as well as the fact that he dated one of her friends after dating Perrie. I heard he’s going to show up with Gigi.” Liam sounded like he hated to break the news to me. “Zayn had gone to New York a few weeks ago, and I think Taylor had planned that they all go together.”

“Wait, are you still going with Harry?” asked Niall.
