Breath & Shadow

A collection of my poems, some dark, some on the lighter side, some new, some previously published, and some I like to call "Brautigans," after one of my favorite poets. Hope you'll enjoy them!

16. Sonnet for a Former Psychic

A/N: Before we had a cellular phone at home, I developed an odd habit of answering the phone before its first ring. To make things even weirder, whenever this happened, I'd also always know exactly who was calling. Although my parents thought it was funny, one of my more devout aunts thought I was possessed. This sonnet is an homage to that odd and now lost ability.

You do not ring, you do not sing in me
Android, iPhone, Blackberry, Galaxy

You have reduced my credibility
To ashes, my inherent telepathy

To speculation, coincidences
No longer do I sense your vibrations

Disquiet callers before the telltale
Tone announces local or long distance

Oh, Bakelite dial - unlit, dark and round
I miss the precious gift you gave to me

The aunt, who thought my new ability
Unhallowed, illegitimacy-bred.

Now all I hold is plastic, soundless, dead
4G has clipped the Universe's thread.
