2. Chapter Two

"Nysa! Wake up!" Someone's voice said as she felt hands shaking her shoulders, trying to get her to wake up.

"What is it? Is everything okay?" Nysa groaned, sitting up and rubbing her eyes as she stared at the girl in front of her.

"You slept in, you're late for breakfast and there's also a howler for you waiting there, it's from the Ministry." She whispered, as if just talking about it would get her in trouble.

"Alright, alright I'm coming." Nysa groaned as she threw on a Slytherin sweatshirt over her black leggings and followed the girl who was practically dragging her to the Great Hall.

"My name's Daphne, by the way. Daphne Greengrass." The small blonde girl smiled.

"Nysa Hawthrone." She managed to say quickly as Daphne threw open the door to the Great Hall and all eyes were fixated on them. Daphne went and took her place among the rest of the Slytherin students, briefly stopping to say good morning to a young Hufflepuff girl, who Nysa could only presume to be her sister.

Nysa winced as a purple envelope appeared in front of her face, quickly turning into a howler.

"NYSA GREY HAWTHORNE! HOW DARE YOU EVEN CONSIDER WRITING TO YOUR MOTHER AND ME AFTER YESTERDAY'S EVENTS! WE WERE INFORMED IMMEDIATELY UPON YOUR SORTING INTO SLYTHERIN HOUSE. DON'T EVEN BOTHER COMING HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS, YOU ARE NO LONGER OUR DAUGHTER. I AM DISGUSTED, DO YOU EVEN RESPECT OUR POSITIONS AS AURORS?!" Her father's voice shouted through the letter before shredding itself. Every pair of eyes were locked on Nysa, whispers about her already circulating through the Great Hall.

Nysa stood there, wide-eyed and trying to fight back tears. A lump grew in her throat and her stomach knotted, as feelings of nausea circulated through her body.

"Ms. Hawthorne." Professor McGonagall said calmly, but before she could continue speaking, Nysa dashed out of the Great Hall, running until she felt as though she was going to collapse. She dashed down a flight of stairs, missing a step and falling down at least seven or eight concrete stairs before landing on the dirt floor at the bottom of them. She pulled her knees up to her chest, covering her face as tears began to roll down her cheeks and her sobs echoed softly in the small stairway. She heard footsteps and quickly silenced her sobs, freezing in the stairway as voices echoed against the stone walls.

"Draco, what are you doing?" It was a female voice, a young one, a harsh one.

"I should check on her..." This time it was Draco's voice that filled Nysa's ears.

"She's a Hawthorne. Her parents imprison people like us. They imprisoned your father." The second voice hissed, clearly trying to protect Draco.

"I am nothing like you and I am certainly nothing like my parents." Draco spat, but Nysa could hear the lie in his voice. It was a lie that he so desperately wanted to be true, but a lie nonetheless.

Nysa heard footsteps walking away, probably the girl, and then her breathing stopped when she heard footsteps that continued to grow closer and closer, growing louder and louder. What if he had listened to the girl? What if he was coming down here to threaten me? Nysa thought to herself.

"Hawthorne?" His voice was soft, calm, comforting to her.

"Please, just leave me alone, Malfoy."  She sneered, not turning to look at him.

"I'm not here to ridicule or insult you. I just wanted to say that I'm sorry. I know how it feels to be..." He started to say, sitting down next to her.

"To be what Malfoy? A disappointment? A disgrace to your entire family? To be disowned because of something you had no choice over? How could you possibly know how that feels?!" Nysa screamed at him, proceeding to bury her face in her hands.

"I do. I know how all of that feels, I know you don't believe me. No one ever would and I can't blame any of them." He whispered as he pulled her in closer to him, wrapping his arm around her shoulders comfortingly.

"It's going to be okay Hawthorne. I promise."

"You can't promise me anything, Malfoy." She said coldly, her eyes dull as the tears dried up and she just stared off into the dark nothingness that lay in front of her, completely still and unmoving in Draco's arms.
