6. The reverend

“Have you heard who are coming to town ?” I sit down next to Mia in the Italian department, and she looks curiously at me.

I shake my head, my thoughts still on Zac and I am happy that Mia doesn’t notice how occupied my mind is. “Nope, but it sounds like it is something interesting enough that I probably should know”.

Mia roll her eyes. “That monster hunger guy Reverend Blomquist, you know the one from tv that claims that vampires and werewolves are real. He is having a seminar on recognising and fighting them.

“What does a man like him want here ? If I was a monster I would definitely find somewhere more exciting place to hunt, somewhere more anonymous”. I shake my head. I remember seeing the so called reverend on tv and thinking he was a few aces short of a deck.

“Well I don't know if monsters are particularly picky about where they live, but okay probably easier to hide in a bigger town, more people means more food”. Mia grins and pull out her italian book.

I wonder if I should tell Mia about the incident with Zac in the hallway, but something is holding me back, it just don’t feel right to share it, not even with my best friend. And I am also very embarrassed by the Way my body reacted.

It turned out the reverend's arrival was the talk of the school. Most people made fun of it, they thought the man an idiot, a stupid fool, but his names make cold snakes slide down my spine. I know about the reverend and his methods and I do not wish to get to know more.

But I don’t need to fear anything do I ? I am careful not to leave evidence leading to me and I don't kill. I don’t have it in me to take lives for no reason and I Can easily get by on the blood I can take without harming the victims.

But I decide to be extra careful, to be on my toes while the reverend is in town, there is no reason to take risks. The shock after Augusta being so close to finding out the truth still lingeri inside me.

After the lesson I heard that someone had seen reverend Blomquist at the School, apparently he had been talking to the principal about God knows who. The rumours were fast and plenty.

It turned out that the reverend was going to give a seminar at the school the same afternoon. I must admit I am a bit shocked. It wasn’t exactly part of the curriculum. But our normally very conservative headmaster seemed very enthusiastic.

So right after lunch I sit down in the auditorium next to Mia. She smiles. “Not that his crazy ideas has any interest, but it is still better than two hours of algebra”.

“Well probably more fun than physics too. But I don’t get why the headmaster agreed to this. I mean: ‘Monsters in our everyday life and how to recognise them’. Does that sound like something we need to learn ?” I shake my head.

“No I agree”. Mia say with a laugh. “But I mean how much do you need fraction in everyday life ?”

The reverend enters the stage and presents himself. He is a tall very serious looking man, dressed in a dark suit and with piercing very light blue eyes. His voice  monotone and a bit gloomy, but he ooze authority. Mia’s eye are wide. “Oh don’t he just look jolly ?”

“He gives me the creeps. I wonder if those to good are his bodyguards or altar boys ?” I nod towards two strict looking men standing to the side of the scene. They kind of look like secret service guys in dark suits, sunglasses and military haircuts.

“I wonder why he need security ? I mean do those work against vampires.. maybe they eat a lot of garlic or something”. Mia looks at the two guys.

I shrug. “Maybe they makes him feel important.. but I’ve heard he tend to provoke people, not everyone likes him”.

On the inside I shudder lightly, actually they look like someone who wouldn’t step back from a fight with a werewolf or a vampire. One of them are tall and sinew. The other one smaller but much wider, both has hard faces.

I can’t help following the seminar. The man is a charismatic speaker and something about what he says strikes an accord with me, something I feel I should remember.

“A lot of people unfortunately thinks that monsters like vampires are purely fictional, but think about it. Don't we all know that one person who are a little to mysterious ? Who as a little too much power over the opposite sex ? Someone a little pale and very good looking ?” I feel like the reverends eyes are staring right at me.

He continues in a low voice. “Someone very exciting, but who has a bit of a dangerous feel to them. Someone new in town. Maybe their arrival happens to be at the same time as unexplained deaths or loads of people coming down with the flu or anemia”.

No this is stupid.  I mean, I don’t believe in vampires, but why am I wondering if I know anyone who fits the description ? I get that weird feeling again, like there is something important I need to remember.

“Vampires does not wear black capes and they don’t have fangs. They do not sleep in coffins and they are not scared of crosses.. and no they do not sparkle in the sun”. The last comment made people laugh. “We are not talking movie vampires, but the real kind, they live among us, they are using and manipulating us. They a monsters who kill without mercy”.

When the seminar is over I feel kind of dizzy and I tell Mia I just have to go by the bathroom. I hurry out there, splashing some cold water in my face.

I am standing there, leaning on the sink when two giggling girls come in. They are chatting and laughing as they are standing in front of the mirror freshening up. Suddenly one say. “Oh God Camilla, who scratched your neck like that ?”

The blonde giggles even more, answering breathlessly. “Well I noticed saturday morning, so I am guessing that Zac got a bit to excited friday night out by the football field”.

I'm staring at my own refleksion, but what I really see is Zac, his mouth latched to the girls pale neck. The his face as he turned, blood on his lips. Now I know what I forgot; Zac is a vampire and he manipulated my mind to make me forget.

I am gasping for air, the room is spinning. No no this can’t be true, vampires isn’t real, but I know what I saw and I know he made me forget it, almost like he hypnotized me. What am I to do ?

I run out the door, I need to get away, to go home and be alone, thinking this through before doing anything. I grab my bag from Mia, and call back at her. “Sorry, I am not feeling well, need to go”.

I am on my way into the school, I didn’t go to the seminar, so I am returning to have my last two lessons. Just as I reach for the door it is thrown open and Augusta comes running out, almost smashing into me.

I can’t help smiling and is about to say something cheeky, but then I notice that she is staring at me with huge scared eyes. She lifts her hand, pointing at me, her voice shaking. “I know what you are, stay the fuck away from me”.

Then she runs away from the school and I just stand there, staring after her. I look around halfway in panic, but no one seems to have noticed. No matter what I turn on the spot, I need to go home and pack up. I have to leave before she starts talking, especially with the reverend in town. Here is no longer safe for me to stay.
