16. Fixing You

It was dark and cold. But Jessica didn’t mind the cold. She could hear, but she couldn’t open her eyes. Then Jack’s voice came through the blackness, through the darkness. “Jessica? Jess, can you hear me?”

Jessica slowly opened her eyes and saw Jack, leaning over her.

Jack then leaned back, sighing. She was okay.

Jessica then saw Elsa sitting next to Jack on his right. She was crying, wiping the tears from her eyes.

“Jess, I...I thought you were…” She couldn’t finish, but Jessica got the idea.

Ethan was next to Jack on his other side. “Jess?” Ethan said. “Are you okay?”

“I don’t know. I think so.” Jessica said.

“Jess, don’t do that again,” Jack said. “You scared me, you scared Elsa, you scared everyone. Why’d you do it?” He looked worried.

“I’ll only speak to you,” Jessica said to Jack. So Jack sent Elsa and Ethan away.

Jessica suddenly felt something, a jolt. She felt like something tugging at her brain. She began laughing hysterically, and Jack slowly backed away.

“Honestly, Jack, I thought you knew this by now,” Jessica said in Alice’s voice. She turned to face Jack, and she looked exactly like Alice. Because she was Alice.

“Alice! I should have known you were behind this!” Jack said angrily.

“Oh, you have me wrong, Jackie-boy!” Alice said, laughing. “You remember that nickname I gave you back then. You absolutely hated it at times, and other times you were absolutely ecstatic about it.”

“What did you do?” Jack growled.

“It’s not what I did, it’s what you did.” Alice said. “You think you’re better than everyone else just because you’re king, but that’s not true. You’re just like everyone else, title or not. Just because you’re king doesn’t mean you get to say you regret her, that you don’t want her. That you don’t want anyone to become like her.”

“No, I don’t regret her. I’ll simply make Ethan unlike her, make him different. He will never become a villain. After today, Ethan will no longer see Jessica. I will forbid her to see him, because I don’t want him turning out like she did.”

“She has a successful marriage, which Ethan should have, and her career as a villain has grown. She is still a villain, and nothing will stop her from seeing Ethan.”

“I’ll find a way, Alice. Mark my words.”

“Months ago, you said you would avenge her. Now you’re blocking her.”

“I said I would avenge her, yes, so that the villain would leave her. But it has become clear that it will never leave her, so I will do the next best thing and forbid her from contact with this family.”

“You are treating ‘villain’ as though it is a spirit. Forbid her from contacting with you? If she can’t be in touch with you or anyone else and Daniel’s unavailable, what will she do then?”

“Then is the only exception, and I mean the only one. Only in emergencies is she to come to me. I love Jessica with all my heart, but I don’t want to be in touch with her except if necessary.”

“Now I know my suspicions are true. You are bipolar. You keep switching from one thought to another. First you say you love her, then you say you don’t. You say you want her, then you say you don’t. Which is it?”

“I love Jessica, but I don’t like that she’s a villain. I will do what I have to. Is that clear?”

Alice growled and said, “Fine. Fine. Whatever you say.”

Jack raised his eyebrows, waiting for the next part.

Alice sighed. “Your Majesty.”

Jack smiled and said, “At least your mother taught you something useful: being respectful. Now give me my daughter back, please.”

Alice morphed into Jessica. She glared at Jack and turned her head away.

“Jessica, I know you’re mad at me, but that doesn’t give you any reason to throw yourself out a window.”

“You don’t want me? Don’t have me. Don’t love me? Hurt me. It won’t make a difference now.”

“I will never hurt you, Jessica.”

“You have hurt me. Too many times have your hands and words beat down on me like I am nothing.”

“Perhaps. But now I understand my mistakes, and I promise you now that I will not hurt you anymore.”

“You have made that promise many times, and have broken it many times. I cannot trust you, as you cannot trust me, it seems. The relationship we once had is falling apart. It used to be that we would play with each other as much as possible. That I would always talk to you whenever there was something wrong. Don’t you wish those days were back?”

Jack nodded. Knowing that Jessica couldn’t see him because she still had her back turned, he said, “Yeah, I do.”

“Now, I can’t even contact you unless it’s a real emergency. Now I can’t even contact my own family. Just because I’m a villain. Just because I changed. Nothing went the way you wanted, and now I have to suffer for it.”

“What do you mean, suffer?” Jack said.

“I’ve had to suffer at your hostility towards me. I had to suffer while you attempted to marry me off, while you attempted to change me back to the good side. Then there were always the times when you got so angry with me, you would hurt me or not even speak to me.”

“I did what I thought was right.”

“Exactly. What you think is right is not always right. Now I’m lying in an infirmary bed, suffering injuries from a 3-story fall.”

“That’s because you decided to throw yourself out of it. I had nothing to do with that.”

“No, you had everything. You told me I was no good, that I was nothing. That Ethan, who is 16 years younger than I am, will be much better than I am. That will not happen. Not now. Perhaps later on, but it will not happen now.”

Jack was silent. He didn’t know what to say. Then he said, “Jess, I need you to answer this question honestly. Why did you join up with Pitch?”

Jessica was silent. Then she said, “Because I wanted a taste of evil, what it would be like to be the villain. When I found out what it was like...well, you know the rest.”

“But YOU changed your name to Hecate. YOU-”

“No, actually. Hecate took me over. I was simply acting to be on her side. I will admit, I liked the evil. But I acted so that you would be safe, and she wouldn’t hurt you.”
“Then you’re very good at acting.”

“Thank you.”

“Then I suppose, since the evil in you WASN’T your fault, that you were simply tricked by Pitch himself, that I’ll allow you to contact me anytime you want. Ethan, on the other hand…”

She turned to face him. Her face looked angry.

“Jess, I’m doing this for Ethan’s safety. Ethan won’t end up having evil in his soul like you. The evil was unintentional, I realize that. But that evil could easily spread. So for Ethan’s safety, I refuse to let you have any contact with Ethan.”

“What about on his birthday?” Jessica said. “I don’t care about the rule about not asking you questions to your face. I will ask questions, and you cannot stop me.”

Jack sighed. “Yes, you may contact him on his birthday. But that is the only day I will allow you to have contact with him.”

Jessica sighed. “Fine.”

She turned away from him, on her side.

“Jessica…” Jack said. He trailed off. Neither of them said anything for awhile. Jessica seemed to calm down.

“I’ll let you get some rest,” he said to her. He got up to leave, and Jessica said suddenly, “No!”

Jack jumped and turned to her.

She turned her head towards him and said, “Please. Stay with me.”

Jack slowly said, “Jessica…”

“Please.”

Jack finally said, “I can’t, Jess. I have some things to do. Make sure everyone’s doing just fine. The party’s still going on, and I have to be there.”

“Please, Daddy. Just stay with me.”

“Jess, you’re 17. You can handle being alone for awhile, right?”

“Please. I want someone to be with me, and you’re the one I want by me right now.”

Jack sighed. “Fine. Only because you truly want me around. But you need to get rest, alright?”

“Okay.”

She turned on her side towards him so that she faced him. Then Jack smiled at her and brushed a strand of her hair off her face. She smiled at him. Jack then whispered, “I’ll stay with you until you fall asleep. Then I have to get back.”

Jessica watched him for a moment, and whispered, “What do you think of me?”

Jack was silent for awhile, and then said carefully, “I think you’re the most beautiful daughter I will ever have. You’re going to be my only daughter as well. I love Ethan as much as I love you, Jess. I don’t care that you’re not going to rule Arendelle. Because I know your spirit-that wild, wild spirit you have-will stay with us. You’re my daughter, and it’s going to stay that way.”

“Daddy?”

“Yeah, Jess?”

She extended her arm and held his hand. “You’ll never leave me, right? You’ll stay with me forever?”

“Jess, I’m immortal. Of course.”

Jessica smiled.

“You’ll never die. That’s why you didn’t die when you were shot in the war.”

“That’s right.”

Jessica’s smile fell, and she slowly closed her eyes.

“You’re strong, Jess. You’ve been through many battles. You’ve lived through many things that would’ve broken many people down. You deserve to rest. Go to sleep.” His voice was a whisper now. “I’ll be here.”

Jessica slowly sank into sleep. When she was asleep, Jack got up silently and left without making a sound.

He went to where the party was still going on. Elsa was standing next to Ethan, talking to him. She sent him to a group of princes, who were playing with each other. Jack walked over to Elsa and said, “Hey, Elsa.”

“Hey, Jack,” she greeted. “How is she?”

“She’s sleeping now.”

Elsa smiled. “She was always so cute when she slept when she was younger.”

Jack smiled. “Yeah, she did. She still does.”

“I knew you could find something good about her.”

Jack simply nodded and stared off into the crowd.

“Jack, I know you love her. I know how you feel about her. You have her wrapped around your finger. You can’t let her go.”

“No, I can’t. I love her too much. She left once. I don’t want her to leave again.”

“Jack…”

“I want Jessica to stay. But I can’t make her. She has a husband. I can’t keep her from him.”

“You kept her from the Warriors of Hell. Besides, I don’t like him. He’s the king of the UNDERWORLD. That isn’t a kingdom! That’s...it’s…”

“I suspect that she really does love him, and if so, then I’m happy for her. She found love at last.”

“Jack, she married someone who rules the UNDERWORLD! If she rules….”
“Elsa, she rules the Underworld. That is how it will be.”

Then Jessica quietly walked into the room. When she went up to Jack, he looked over his shoulder and saw her.

“You’re awake. That was pretty short.”

“I have not slept an entire night since I was 10 years old. I’ve gotten used to waking up in the middle of the night.”

“It’s only been 15 minutes.”

Jessica shrugged. “I don’t know what to say, then.”

“Please, Daddy. Just stay with me.”

“Jess, you’re 17. You can handle being alone for awhile, right?”

“I cannot. I must go back to my husband. I will see you again soon, hopefully.”

“Please, Jessica, stay with us.”

“I cannot. I am sorry.”

Then Jessica went over to Ethan, and Jack and Elsa saw her hug him. Then she left after giving one last wave to her parents. They waved back, smiling.

Then Jack turned to Elsa. “I have a feeling that something’s going to happen. Something bad.”

“Maybe. I don’t have that feeling.”

Jack shook his head and walked over to Ethan, trying to distract himself. But he couldn’t distract the feeling that something bad was going to happen, and it had to do with Jessica and Daniel.
