6. ~Chapter 5~

"Are you sure this isn't too fancy?" I ask Carly, staring down at the white and blue floral sundress laying out in front of us on the bed, amongst a pile of other discarded clothing items. After texting with Michael last night I struggled to find an outfit for today, so I called over my fashion-forward best friend to save the day. It was such a struggle getting me to find something that she ended up spending the night and here we are, at quarter to eleven in the morning still deciding on something.

She groans in frustration. "You know Katie, for someone who claims she doesn't really like the guy, you sure are indecisive about what to wear to your little lunch thing" She says, popping on a strawberry sucker she found in my mother's pantry.

At this moment Morgan comes strolling in. "Wow Carly, and here I thought you had enough of sucking on shit when your boyfriend's parents aren't home" She sneers at my best friend. Not even waiting for a response, she turns to me. "I'm going out" She says and turns to walk out of my room.

"Where are you going?" I call out after her. The only response I get before the front door slams shut is none of your business. I roll my eyes and turn back to Carly, who looks absolutely shocked at what was said to her.

"Remember when she was a sweet little kid who followed you around everywhere?" Carly says, clearly brushing off what just went down.

"Yep. I don't know what's gotten into her lately" I shrug. "Anyway, you didn't answer my question. The dress?" I say to her.

She rolls her eyes and just starts shoving me towards the bathroom. "Just go get ready, you have an hour before he gets here. I'll take care of everything" She says and slams the bathroom door in my face.

"So, where are you taking me?" I ask Michael as he drives along the road. Outfit wise, Carly picked out a pink flowing top matched with a pair of light blue denim capris.

He glances towards me and smirks. "It's a surprise" He says. Annoyed, I roll my eyes and huffing, I look out the window. After about 10 minutes of silence he pulls up to a seemingly familiar parking lot. "Okay princess, we're here"

"Don't call me that please" I mumble, looking out the window at my surroundings. "The park?" I ask in confusion.

"Yep" he says simply before leaping out of the car to race around and open up my door for me. I step out of the car and he reaches in the back and pulls out a picnic basket.

"A picnic? How is that going to help you get to know me?" I ask him and he just rolls his eyes and chuckles.

"You ask way too many questions darling" He says and just turns and starts walking towards the park, glancing behind him slightly to make sure I'm following him. As I walk behind him I notice he's leading me back to the tree - my tree - where we met. He stops underneath the branches and turns to face me before putting the picnic basket down. "Oh hello, aren't you just a fine looking lady" He says, his charming accent almost making me swoon. "My name's Michael, might I get yours?"

"Michael, what are you doing? We've already met, I came here with you" I say to him, letting out a small laugh.

"Well, I don't believe we have" He says, winking at me to play along. "Your name, ma'am?" He asks again, sticking out his hand for me to shake.

I let out a laugh. "I'm Katie, it's nice to meet you" I say, taking his hand and allowing him to pull me slightly towards him.

He smiles and kisses my hand. "Katie, it's been lovely meeting you" He says and drops my hand back down to my side. "Well, my date seems to have stood me up for our picnic, would you care to join me? There's enough food for two" He invites, motioning toward the picnic basket he himself placed on the ground.

"I would love to" I say, smiling at his little show.

"Excellent" He grins at me and turns to pull out a blanket for us to sit on. "Have a seat, sweetheart" He motions toward the ground. I sit down and he moves to take a seat in front of me, beginning to pull out containers full of delicious looking snacks. "During picnics I like to play games, do you like games, Katie?" He asks me, gazing at me with intense blue eyes.

"Depends on the game" I reply, feeling slight apprehension at his question.

"No need to be afraid, I was going to suggest something along the lines of 20 questions, I'll ask you something about yourself, and you will answer as honestly as possible. Then you get to ask me something about myself and I will do the same" He explains before grinning. "No repeats, and only 2 back-outs"

I nod. So this is how he plans to 'get to know me'  "I think I can live with that" I say, shrugging and taking a bite of what looks like an egg salad sandwich. "You go first"

"Are you from New York originally?" Is his first question.

"I was born in Michigan originally but came here when I was four" I respond. "Why would you come to live here when you're from such a beautiful city"

"School, needed a change of scenery" He responds before chuckling. "Also the heat and hurricanes were getting a bit old" He laughs.

"Yeah, I can see hurricanes being a mild inconvenience" I laugh, making him laugh too.

The questions continued on for several hours, who would have thought that there could be so much to know about a single individual. So far what I know about him is that he was born and raised in Charleston, he's traveled all around the world, his favourite meal is tomato soup with biscuits on the side. By biscuits he means what are sort of like buns made with different seasoning ingredients like garlic and cheese and such. He also liked watching sunrises back home over the ocean as often as he could, and everyone from his town says he is the spitting image of his father. There's so much more, but way too much to explain in a short amount of time. I think I like the guy a little more now that I know there's a bit of a deeper side to him.

"Oh my, look at the time" I say, pulling up my phone screen to show that it's almost four-thirty. "Okay, last question because my mom is going to start calling if I'm not back soon" I say and he looks up from his position laying on the ground.

"Ask away darling, but I still have one more" He says, grinning up at me and pulling both of us up into a standing position

"Was this a date, Michael?" I ask him, my breathing speeding up a bit as I await his response.

"Do you want it to be a date, Katie?" He asks me, moving closer to me in an almost subtle manner.

"You're not allowed to answer with a question" I whisper as I notice him pulling himself closer to me, almost too close but my mind refuses to take control.

"Well if it were a date, and it's done, I would pull you closer to me, like so" He mumbles, pulling me right up against him, his hands on my waist. "And I would gently stroke your hair out of your face" He says, still demonstrating. He's going to kiss you, pull away! My mind screams at me but this time it's my body that refuses to take control. "And then I would lean in and.." He dips his head down but finally I pull back before he can make contact.

"No, Michael. Not yet, we practically just met" I whisper and gaze into his eyes.

He smirks at me and pulls away. "All in good time, darling" He says, his smirk turning into a dazzling white smile. "Now, how about we get your pretty face home?" He says, the comment making me almost melt.

After some easy small-talk on the ride home we're sitting outside my house in Michael's car. "So, you never asked me that last question of yours" I mention, looking in his direction.

"Oh!" he says, meeting my gaze. "I was going to ask when I could see you again"

"So?? What happened?" Carly screeches into the phone. "What did you guys talk about? Do you like him?" She asks. As soon as I got home she called, it's as if she has some sort of radar on me.

"I had so much fun" I reply honestly into the phone. "He's very friendly. We played twenty questions for hours, I didn't even feel the time go by"

"Oh my God, Katie, haven't you ever heard of details?" She groans into the phone. "Tell me everything"

I roll my eyes at her eagerness. Why must this girl know every detail of everything I do? "There's nothing to tell" I reply, deciding to be difficult.

"Did he kiss you?" She asks me, her voice starting to become frustrated.

"He tried to, but I told him not yet" I reply, anticipating her reaction.

"You what?" She screams into the phone at me. "What do you mean you said no?"

"It's too soon Carly! I literally met the guy a week ago" I reply to her, becoming frustrated at her annoyance at me.

"Girl, I met him 2 days ago and that boy is lucky that I'm with Matt because I would've jumped him right where he stood behind that counter" She says, laughing slightly at the thought.

I sigh and roll my eyes. "You say that about every hot guy that walks into the shop" I say, stifling a laugh. "Does Matt know you talk like this?"

"He knows what I'm about" She giggles. "But he also knows that I love him and would never actually act on it" She says. "Anyway," She starts again. "Do you think you'll see him again?"

"Yeah actually, we're getting together again on Friday" I say, smiling.

"Oh, and to think you basically couldn't stand him barely three days ago" She says, laughing at me.

"I don't know, I think he's different than what I expected" I say to her, shrugging even though she can't see me.

"How so"

And for the first time in a long time I'm at a loss for words. Michael just seems different from any guy I've encountered. "I don't know Carly, he just seems special"
