Double Trouble

Sweet and quiet Harry and sassy and rambunctious Emily Potter have lived their lives with Sirius Black and Remus Lupin ever since their parents, James and Lily, were killed by Voldemort on October 31, 1981. Now, ten years and a few months later, the twins are getting ready for their first year at Hogwarts. But everything is not what it seems.

6. Already Breaking the Rules

"Snape is so unfair!" Mackenzie raged, pacing back and forth in the Slytherin common room.

Blaise, Daphne, and Draco were sitting in chairs and couches, working on homework, reading, or building a card tower out of Exploding Snap cards, respectively. Mackenzie had been angry about this all afternoon, through Transfiguration, lunch, Charms, and Defense Against the Dark Arts.

"Kenzie, you've been mad about this all day." Daphne sighed, turning a page in her book. "We know he's unfair and biased, but there's absolutely nothing we can do about it. Unless you want to get him fired, which is basically impossible, the best we can do is just deal with him."

"I don't see why you care so much." Draco said, carefully setting another card on top of his tower. "I mean, he's nice to you."

"And rude to everyone else, Draco." Mackenzie snapped. "That would be the problem. It's not right for him to treat us like we're better than everyone else. Besides, Harry won't talk to me, ever since Hermione got in trouble because of my potion."

"Kenzie, Harry's been treating you like crap ever since the Sorting." Blaise said, checking something in a book. "Why do you even still want to talk to him?"

"Because he's my brother." Mackenzie said, glancing up as footsteps echoed faintly overhead. "I'd rather that he didn't hate me just because we're in different houses, thank you very much."

Blaise shrugged, turning back to his essay. "Still. If he's treating you like crap, why do you keep trying to get his attention? I thought you wanted to be at Hogwarts to get away from being 'Harry Potter's sister?'"

"Yeah, well..." Mackenzie trailed off, realizing that she had no answer to that. "Whatever. Let's talk about something else."

"Like what?" Draco asked.

"Like..." Mackenzie paused, thinking. "I know! I say that tonight, after dinner, we sneak out and make some mischief!"

"I think that's a really bad idea, Kenzie." Daphne said. "What if we get caught?"

"Do you really want to go through your entire school career knowing that you never snuck out at night to pull a prank?" Mackenzie asked. "I thought you were the kind of girl I could get along with, Daph!"

Daphne cracked a grin. "I just don't want to get detention on my first day."

"We won't." Mackenzie grinned.

"What makes you say that?" Blaise asked. "If we get caught, we're definitely getting detention."

"I know we won't get caught, either." Mackenzie's grin grew broader. "Unbeknownst to my dear brother and guardians, I snuck into Padfoot's study the day before we left, and I found an invisibility cloak and an enchanted map of Hogwarts. With those two items, we can know exactly where everyone is all the time, and be invisible. We won't get caught."

The other three began grinning, too.

"Well that changes things." Blaise said, closing his book. "So what're we gonna do?"

"Kenzie, this seems like a really bad idea." Daphne breathed, pressing close to Mackenzie as a ghost passed by.

Somewhere in the distance, hinges squealed, followed by the slamming of a door. Wind seemed to be blowing in the hallways, although they could feel nothing; or was that just their imaginations? From somewhere, whispers echoed down the hallways.

"Do you hear that?" Blaise whispered.

"Yeah." Mackenzie looked a little nervous, but she seemed to be trying to appear confident and completely unafraid.

All four jumped as a clock began chiming.

"Hogwarts is freaky after hours." Draco muttered. "What exactly is the point in us being out here, again?"

"We've got to prank the Gryffindors!" Mackenzie said impatiently. "Come on! Just a simple sticking charm, and tomorrow, none of the Gryffindors will be able to get off the bench at the Gryffindor table."

"Why are you trying to glue your brother to a bench again?" Daphne whispered.

"Because as Blaise said, he's been treating me like crap." Mackenzie snapped. "So I'm gonna get him back."

"Okay, let's just hurry." Blaise pushed Mackenzie gently forward, before muttering to himself. "First day and we're already breaking a billion school rules."

"One rule!" Mackenzie defended.

"More than that." Daphne objected. "We're out of bed after hours, we're using magic in the corridors, we're sticking Gryffindors to benches,"

"That's specifically against the rules?" Mackenzie asked, surprised.

"Well, pranking people is." Daphne rolled her eyes. "The point is, we're not supposed to be doing this and I'm freaking out. I'd like to return to my bed as soon as possible."

"Hold it," Mackenzie stopped, stealing a glance at what had appeared like an old piece of parchment, but in reality was something called The Marauder's Map. "McGonagall's coming this way. Against the wall, make sure nobody can see our feet, and nobody say a word."

A few tense minutes passed as McGonagall approached, stopped directly in front of them, looked directly at them, and then disappeared from view. Mackenzie squinted at the map for another few minutes, before waving them forwards.

"We're safe." she whispered. "Let's go."

Without any more mishaps, the group made it to the Great Hall, performed a sticking charm, and made it back to Slytherin's common room.

"If we're doing things like that now, we need a name." Blaise decided, as they sat on a couch in front of a fire. Despite it being nearly one in the morning, none of them were tired.

"Too bad Marauder's is already taken." Mackenzie sighed. "It's pretty genious."

"Yeah." Draco nodded. "But what if we go with something more simple? Like, the Serpents, or the Bandits, or the Rogues. Something like that."

"What if we were the Serpents?" Daphne asked. "And then, we can document our 'survival tips' and call it the 'Serpents' Secrets.' Kind of like how these Marauder's created this map. They passed on their brilliance, let's pass on ours."

"I like that." Mackenzie nodded, and Blaise and Draco nodded their agreement. "But once we know how, we have to charm it so that nobody can use it without a certain saying."

"Absolutely." Blaise nodded.

"Oh, hold on." Daphne said, rising. "I'll be right back."

She slipped through the door into the girls' dorms. The other three waiting, more than a little impatient, until she returned. She was holding a journal, bound in leather and with two dragons engraved on the cover.

"My mum gave me this," she said slowly, holding it out. "Well, technically she planned on giving it to me. She told my dad all about it just after I was born. About a week later, she was killed by Death Eaters a week later. When I was seven, my dad gave it to me. He told me to do something special with it, and I've been saving it all these years, waiting for the right moment." She hesitated, before putting it in Mackenzie's hands. "This is the right moment. I'm positive it is."

Mackenzie gently carressed the dragons on the journal. "Are you sure, Daph?"

Daphne nodded, a slow smile breaking out on her face. "Absolutely. I know that I'll never find a better reason for it. We can write down all our tips and things in it, but also little diary entries. Whenever we pull off a particularly good prank, we can write about it. We can also just write our personal diary entries in it, as long as we're okay with the rest of us seeing what we're writing. Then, one day, we can give it to our kids. It'll be amazing."

Mackenzie smiled, before opening the diary. Carefully, in fancy calligraphy, she wrote on the first page The Serpents' Secrets.

Turning to the next page, she put the date on top of the paper, and began to write.

My name is Mackenzie Potter. I, along with Daphne Greengrass, Blaise Zabini, and Draco Malfoy, are the Serpents. It is currently one in the morning on our second day at Hogwarts. We just pulled off our first prank...
