4. An Unforeseen Encounter

Playing Hide & Seek has turned out to be a bad idea for Felix. Max has disappeared across the road, where he was told not to go. Felix is desperately searching for his little brother, begging for him to appear from his hiding spot. The streets are empty, it’s dark, there’s a cold breeze drifting through the air. Max has disappeared in the dark night and Felix is extremely worried. He isn’t playing around anymore, he just wants to know that Max is safe. If he doesn’t show up, his disappearance could lead to serious consequences. Felix runs along the sidewalk, heading further towards the city, shouting Max’s name every so often.

Felix: Max! MAX! Where are you?! PLEASE COME HERE!

There are only a few cars passing by on the road, so there's no way Max could've been hit by a car. Felix reaches an alley between two large buildings. He looks down the alley and spots tracks, thinking they’re Max’s. So Felix decides to look for Max in the alley. The tracks on the ground lead to a dead end and to an opened sever hatch in the ground.

Felix: Oh… Oh no, no no… He couldn’t have ventured down into the sewer… He couldn’t have…

Felix shouts Max’s name, not down the hatch, but around him until he collapses in a pool of tears. Felix is starting to lose hope of finding his brother.

Felix: M-Max…

After hearing crying, Max finally appears around the corner of the building, he runs towards Felix, shouting.

Max: Felix! Over here! I’m here!

Felix lifts his head off the ground and looks in the direction of the shouting. He spots Max running towards him. Max kneels down and extends his arms to hug Felix. Felix hugs Max back and cries into his fur.

Felix: I- I thought you ran off to escape from me…

Max: W-what?! I was just hidden behind the bins in that opposite alley! I would never abandon you, why would I do that?!

Max pets his brother’s back to calm him down.

Felix: Max, I really thought you were hit by a car, or- or even something worse…

Max: I-it’s my fault Felix, I’m so sorry for making you worried… I didn’t want this at all…

Felix: N-no, it’s okay, you don’t have to apologize. I understand that you just wanted to have some fun, I just got a little scared for you because you went further than I told you to. I honestly thought you wanted to just run away and went down into the sewer, but obviously I was wrong there… speaking of which, why is the sewer open anyways?

Max: How about we take a closer look and peek down?

Felix: Well, I don’t think that’s the best idea, but I am really curious about what’s down there myself and why its open…

Max and Felix cautiously approach the opening, leading to deep into the sewer. Felix kneels down and looks down into the sewer. There’s footsteps echoing from the depths of the sewer.

Max: Do you see anything?

Felix: Hmm… not yet. I can hear footsteps… Someone is coming!

Max and Felix both start backing off, they can hear someone climbing up the ladder up the manhole. Felix is getting nervous.

Felix: Max, we should go.

Max: No, I wonder what or who it is….

Felix: Max, it’s time to go, seriously, c’mon!

Felix grabs Max’s paw in fear and pulls Max away a few meters, fearing for their own safety. Suddenly, a briefcase is thrown to the surface from the sewer, and a slim, tall, sinister looking fox wearing aviator sunglasses and a black suit climbs out from manhole. He glares at Felix and Max, who are frozen in fear, not sure how to react.

Blake: The fuck are these two kids doing here… I thought we had the perimeter secure… Wonderful. Well, hold on a second here.

The suited fox picks up his briefcase and walks towards Max and Felix. Max hides behind Felix and whispers in fear.

Max: Felix, I’m scared…

Felix: I am too, but it’ll be alright, Max…

The mysterious fox stops in front of them, standing up tall and intimidatingly. He places his briefcase on the ground next to him, takes of his sunglasses and reveals his red eyes, they’re almost glowing. He lights a cigarette and takes a long drag of it and speaks with his menacingly deep and rough voice.

Blake: So, what in the hell are you two doing here at this time of the night? Snooping around like you’re some “super-secret-spies” or something. I’m trying to get  a job done here, and you two decide to get in my way, interrupting me and what I’m doing. Are you two aware of the perilous, unpleasant consequences that may well follow?

The suited fox takes another drag from his cigarette and exhales deeply.

Blake: I’m surprised you didn’t run for your lives as soon as I popped up. I gotta say, you two kids have some guts. If we meet again, chances are, you won’t have those guts anymore. Just hope that we never meet again. But in any case, if you two were to even attempt to expose me… Let’s just say that I’ll show up again. But you two are smart enough to keep your muzzles shut about this, right? So what’re you doing here anyways, hm?

Felix: S-sir, we… we were just playing and then we stumbled across the open manhole and found you, we didn’t know anything about you, or that you’d be here…

Blake: Really now? Well, you’re only kids. But still, you better identify yourselves.

Felix: But- can’t you see how young we are? Do you think we could do much? That I would purposely risk our lives like this?!

Blake: Your names, this instant, or I’m going to force them out of you.

Felix: I- uh, we-we’re F-Felix and Max from the Ridgewood family…

Blake: Felix… and Max. You two are lousy vermin, you know that. Trembling in fear. It’s cute to me, really.

Felix gets frustrated at being called vermin, but holds back his anger to avoid more problems.

Blake: So, Felix and Max Ridgewood… I’ll keep these names in mind. Remember, if I find out that you two are up to something like trying to expose me, I’ll track you two down. No matter how far you go, no matter how far you hide.

Felix: I-I swear we have nothing to do with the police! We’re just kids who strayed too far from the beach, and-and stumbled across you just before we were going to go back home…

The menacing fox kneels down and stares into Felix’s eyes with an ominous facial expression.

Blake: I can sense your fear, kid. You’ve the same fear as the other kids that came face to face with me, just before their lives, let’s say… faded. They were on my list, and I gotta say, you two are lucky to still be alive. Now, do you have any idea who I am?

Felix is extremely stressed out, cold sweating while trying to communicate with the mysterious fox, thinking about hardly anything but keeping his brother behind his back. Felix quietens his breathing after hearing what the suspicious fox had said about his encounters with other children.

Felix: N-no sir… We-we’ve never heard of you before…

The mysterious fox whispers something to Felix that no child would ever want to hear.

Blake: Felix. I am one of the most nefarious, notorious and the most fearsome hitmen in this accursed city. Understand why you’re so lucky to be alive. I need you and Max to get out of my sight. Before I change my mind and obliterate you two, never to be heard of again. If you want to live, you’ll want to back up and get as far from here as you possibly can. A word of warning.

Felix starts to back off with Max while the Fox-hitman stands up tall, grabs his suitcase and throws his cigarette down into the sewer, shortly followed by a massive explosion beneath the ground.

Blake: RUN YOU PETTY FORLORN BRATS!

Max screams in fear while Felix tightly grabs his paw and runs away, out of the alleyway with Max. The hitman laughs hysterically as he scales a building’s fire exit and sees the two running for their lives. 20 minutes later, Max & Felix reach their home completely out of breath, run up to the porch and rapidly knock on the door. Seconds later, Mrs. Ridgewood bursts open the door, extremely worried about Felix and Max’s safety.

Mrs. Ridgewood: Felix! Max! Where have you two been?! I was so worried about you two…

She hugs them both, relieved.

Felix: Mom? Can we get through the door, please?

Mrs. Ridgewood: I- of course. It’s better off if we talk inside. Did you two see that enormous explosion?

Everyone shuffles into the house, Mr. Ridgewood runs up to them, also greatly relieved, seeing his sons safe and in one piece.

Mr. Ridgewood: Are you guys alright? We heard a huge explosion near the city just a couple minutes ago. Mom was freaking out and really worried about you two, so was I. What took you two so long to get back?!

Mrs. Ridgewood: You even left a note on the kitchen counter saying that you two would be back before dark…

Felix: S-Sorry mom and dad, we were playing at the beach and we didn’t realize the time… We heard the… the explosion when we were heading back home and we got really scared so we ran back… luckily it wasn’t near here… But, erm… excuse us, I think we’d need a quick shower upstairs to wash off the sand and calm down…

The ZPD has been already alerted to the explosion and their sirens are heard out in the distance by the city. Max heads upstairs without saying a single word and enters the bathroom. Shortly after, Felix runs up and goes into the bathroom as well.

Felix: Uh… Max, I’m so sorry that happened and ruined our day…

Max: I am NEVER going to stay outside that late ever again. We could have been killed! Who the hell was that weirdo anyways??

Felix: I-I have no idea, Max, but get in the shower, we can’t keep mum and dad waiting again, and we gotta have dinner soon…

Max sighs and gets in the shower, shooing Felix out of the bathroom.

Max: I will, I can take care of myself in a shower at least… close the door behind you please. I think I need a bit of alone time…

Felix leaves the bathroom, shuts the door behind him and sits on the floor, worried, mumbling to himself.

Felix: I-I’ve failed them. Mum, Dad… Max got in danger, we both were in danger… It’s his first day with me and we both could’ve been killed… It’s all my fault…

Felix starts crying and leans his head against the wall.

Felix: It’s… It’s all my fault…

About 7 minutes pass and the shower goes quiet. Max dresses up, and walks out of the bathroom, seeing Felix crying against the wall. Max heads over to Felix and taps his shoulder.

Max: Hey, Felix… It’s okay Felix… We didn’t us get injured, did we? No! You see, that’s like, the most important thing. We’re alive, not even hurt! …c’mon Felix… let’s go have dinner…

Felix: Max, it’s all my fault… I put you in danger… I should’ve protected you like I swore I would, but I let you get in danger instead. Not even a day has passed since we first met and I-I…

Felix collapses onto the floor in a pool of tears.

Felix: I’ve failed you! I’ve failed you Max!

Max: P-Please stop with the crying Felix… It really hurts me to see you like this…

Max sits down next to Felix, snuggling and comforting him.

Max: Look… If anything, I’m the one who failed you, I wondered further than you told me to, and all I did back then was put both our lives in danger. I broke my promise to make your life even better, and look what I’ve done…

Max smooths Felix’s head fur with his paw.

Max: I’ve broken my own promise to you. But… Let’s try to shrug off today’s events..?

Felix hugs Max tightly and rests his chin on Max’s shoulder.

Felix: I am so sorry, I love you Max. I hope what happened today was a one-off thing…

Max: Well, I’m still afraid of that weirdo, who called me vermin… Look, I’m worried that he’ll find and harm us… Do you think we should let our Mum and Dad and the police know about him?

Felix: He won’t harm us. The city is big, and I doubt he’ll ever find us again anyways. But yeah, we should definitely tell them…

Max: Why did you lie in the first place though? …Were you not ready to tell them..? ‘Cause I hate when someone lies for no reason… Anyways, we need to go eat dinner

Max goes downstairs straight to the kitchen while Felix sighs in despair, standing up and following his bro. Shortly after, the whole family assembles at the dinner table and everybody sits down…

Felix: Mom….dad…we have something else to tell you. We were heading home when weird looking fox came out of sewer and we…..almost got in danger….

Mr. Ridgewood: Oh dear…did he do anything to you?

Max: He called me a vermin….

Max responded with a cute frowned face….

Felix: Well, he asked us several questions, threatened and insulted us! Then he threw a cigarette into the sewer which resulted in a massive explosion. We were witnesses of everything….

Mrs. Ridgewood: We should contact the police as soon as possible!

Felix: Yeah, mom….dad…sorry for not telling you the complete truth before…

Mr. Ridgewood: Sometimes, telling the truth will make things much better than telling a lie. Thanks for letting us know. Do you guys remember his appearance? I hope you didn’t think I would whoop your butts because of telling us the truth…

Felix: Nope, dad. And I think Max does remember…

Max: Well, uh…yeah. He wore a completely black suit, had gloves, carried a briefcase, and I think he had sunglasses. But the only thing I remember the most is that he looked so creepy and sinister, dad. I will never stay out this late ever again. I have even failed my brother, completely…

Felix cuts him off…

Felix: Max! It’s ME who failed you! I swore to always protect you but I didn’t protect you when you needed me the most…

Max: Bro! Please….stop…I should have been more vigilant….I am the one to blame here…

Felix: NO! Bro! Alright we’ll just leave it there. The past is past, we just gotta tell the police about that suspicious guy and it’ll be alright. Uncle Nick will take care of him.

Max: Uncle Nick?

Mrs. Ridgewood: Yep, my brother, cutie. He is a high ranking police officer at the ZPD. He will do everything in his power to detain any criminal who threatens to kill us.

Mr. Ridgewood: Yep, see guys? There’s nothing to worry about. Everything will be resolved, don't worry. Don’t let the past destroy your future, kids. Keep living on and be happy. I am so relieved that you’ve come back in one piece. Please don’t stay outside this late next time.

Felix: Yeah. Dad. We promise we won’t stay out that late ever again.

Max eats just a small portion of his the dinner and leaves half of the meal on the plate, then he pushes it away…

Max: I am not hungry anymore. Thanks for the dinner.

Max sighs, stands up, and walks upstairs to his bedroom. Felix finishes his dinner quickly and follows Max upstairs, worried, leaving mom and dad alone. He enters the bedroom and sees Max standing next to the window staring out at the glorious and of course, dangerous city of Zootopia. Felix slowly approaches him from behind…

Felix: Nice view, eh?

Max: Yeah…

Max lays down on their bed….

Max: Comfort me…

Felix happily smiles and gets in the bed laying down and facing Max…

Felix: It’s gonna be okay. Everything is gonna be okay bro. Just hug me and you’ll feel safe…

Max hugs Felix, fatigued. Felix starts rubbing his fur…

Max: What’s happening tomorrow?

Felix: We’re visiting your new school. It’s gonna be fun, trust me.

Max: I hope you stay with me the entire time in school tomorrow. I am not mentally prepared to be alone, in a new community…

Felix: Don’t worry bro, I will accompany you at the start of your new experience at school. Right now, you’re just surrounded by love and comfort. Nothing to worry about. Just your brother who loves you more than his own life.

Felix said with a soft voice while softly gently putting Max’s head against his chest so he can feel warm and fall asleep listening to his heartbeats…

Max: It's's so…comforting…..I love…..you…

Max slowly falls asleep with his brother’s arms wrapped around his body. After such a terrifying day, both of them finally get some nice long sleep without any disturbance. A lot of stuff is going to happen overnight….there’s still much more to come….who’s turn is next? The answer can be found in the following chapter!
