39. Walking With The Devil Part II

PART 39: Walking With The Devil Part II

Sometimes it can be difficult separating an illusion from reality. It’s like being conscious in a dream that seems to be real. Then there are motives. Motives are what drives a person insane, because they are the roots behind every true intention.

By now it was too late to try to make amends, the past was coming back to hunt everyone; one by one without any mercy. What goes around really comes around.

The very next day at Kevin’s restaurant Riah notices Kevin is late. She tried to call him but there was no answer. She decided to continue his project without him. It was finally happening, her dream she was so desperately working extremely hard for. Her graduation was next month. While she directed the contractors in the right way, a memory of Eric pops into her head, causing her to lose focus. She couldn’t believe she had an one night stand with a man she had never met before. But it was all good, she was in the safe zone. He messaged her a few times before she finally decided to block his number, but it still didn’t curve her hunger she felt for him—or Shaun to be exact. The loneliness was taking over her world, and it was getting hard for her to escape. Having sex with Eric didn’t necessarily work in regards of making her forget her very first love. It was a pain she was willing to bare, but a loss she would never forget.

What she took from the pleasurable experience was the thrill, though it wasn’t really admirable or safe to her. She thought about a new life that was different from the one she had created for herself, and what would’ve happened if Shaun never approached her that day.

He didn’t know where she stayed, so it was perfect. She wasn’t going to ever go to the club, so she didn’t have to ever see Eric’s face again. She only hoped that he would forget about her with time.

Riah focuses on the moment, being surrounded by all the new men in the room comforted her with warmth and desire. She could literally feel the masculinity invading her, intimidating her body. All of them were obviously attracted to her, and quite smitten in how she managed to be a lead guy all by herself on the project. A few had their chests in their throats as they failed miserably in trying to flirt with her and even seduce her.

Snapping out of her unconventional thoughts, she found it odd Kevin hadn’t made it in yet. That was so unlike him, and she had this strange alarming feeling that squeezed her heart. Her hairs stood up, as she knew deep down something was wrong. She goes into the dining area to find Shanice. She was looking more dazzling than ever, cheery as usual assisting a guest. Riah waited to she finished serving the handsomely wealthy man.

Shanice parted ways with the older gentleman, and made her way to Riah. “Hey love, is everything okay? You look troubled.”

She places her hand on Riah’s shoulder, and rubs her gently.

“Have you heard from Kevin?”

“Not since yesterday, why what’s the matter.”

“I don’t know, something doesn’t seem right, I can just feel it. You know I tried to call him several times today, and his phone went straight to voicemail. Does he do this often?”

Riah wrinkles her forehead a bit, as she folds one arm under the other.

“Well he doesn’t bail too often, he’s only done it maybe twice, but each time it was because it was an emergency.” Shanice and Riah started to walk to the end of the restaurant to get to the elegant hall.

“I really don’t know what to do. I went ahead and started without him today, but I don’t want to jump ahead of myself.”

“Riah trust me, your work here is very much appreciated, I am sure everything that you are doing Kevin will appreciate it. Look, don’t trip out okay, things happen. I’m sure there is a logical explanation behind this.”

Riah hugs Shanice, “Okay, I feel a little better now.”

Riah heard Shanice’s advice, but she still had a perfervid feeling of anxiety over clouding her. She hadn’t heard from Tia in weeks, something just seemed odd. With her graduation approaching she didn’t want to worry herself into a coma.

“I do overthink, it’s just so much is happening, this project, my graduation and starting a new job. I don’t know how I keep the energy up to do all of this.” Riah smiles.

“You will be fine, just don’t over cook your noodle. I am gonna head back to the front before the new cook manages to burn the whole place down, then Kevin would really have something to be mad about. Congratulations on your success, you are well on your way!”

Shanice leaves the room.

Riah walks down the hall, and enters into the new room in progress. She is quite pleased with the steady development. “Ok fellas, just finish crowning the ceiling, and everyone is free to go.”

One worker speaks out, “Lunch on you right? Miss. Fancy Architect...” The fairly attractive middle aged caucasian man teased her, looking like he just stepped out of a movie. He winks at Riah, as she becomes quite taken on his blue eyes. She could tell he liked her, but how could he if he was married? His ring sparkled like a beacon. She sighed to herself. Riah didn’t even want to think about another man. She was starting to lose faith in humans, no matter how sincere men seemed, the ones that Riah attracted were the opposite of what she thought a good man should be. She couldn’t let herself become a victim of another soul. All she could do is give a farewell smile, and be on her way. There was no need to give an impression of false hope to any of the workers.

Riah leaves the restaurant, still asking herself if she should call Tia or not. She didn’t want to be prideful, but a part of her held herself from the truth. Every time Riah thought her and Tia were doing good, she would always throw a tantrum. Just like what happened in the club, and Riah was growing tired of the bickering and the petty fighting. She was tired of being the one who had to make amends for a relationship that was unwanted. Riah loved her sister to death but she refused to be the blame about what happened to her all of those years ago.

Riah at times felt the tension between her and Tia, but often nothing was really said. No one wanted to address the elephant in the room. Maybe part of Tia felt resentful towards Riah, though she failed to admit it verbally. There was always an unsure smile both girls displayed as if they could really pretend to trust each other. To the outside world they were the best of friends, but they knew skeletons remained hidden, locked away in their closet.

The very thought is driving Riah crazy, she has to swallow her pride, and face her fears. She promises herself not to overreact in the situation, and check on her regardless. As she clicks on the green phone icon.

Tia answers the phone immediately. She didn’t say anything, waiting for Riah to make the first move. It was typical of her, to be a bitch. Riah could feel the pain swelling in her stomach, moving upwards to the middle of her chest. She hated she loved Tia so much, but in the end they were still sisters no matter what fucked up situations they dragged each other in.

“I didn’t want to bother you, I just wanted to make sure everything is alright. Is Kevin okay, he didn’t come into the restaurant today.” Riah waited for Tia’s response.

Tia thought that was odd, him not being at work. She pondered her thoughts, trying to figure out his whereabouts, nothing made sense to her. It was very unlikely that Kevin would just miss work for no apparent reason, and of course him not calling was off. But Tia played it off, not wanting Riah to know that she really didn’t know where Kevin was. She came up with a lie quickly.

“I forgot to tell you, he told me to mention him getting some more supplies, whatever that means. He has been running around since yesterday, I’m pretty sure his phone is just dead. I will tell him to get in touch with you as soon as I can get a hold of him.” The lies just rolled off her tongue like rain droplets sliding down a leaf. She had became quite skilled at deceiving, she was a master in the arts.

Without any shadow of a doubt, Riah blindly took her sister’s word, and hung up the phone. Now it was time for Tia to lurk. She missed a few calls from Kevin, but was that enough for him to go out and cheat? Maybe she was jumping to conclusions, but her curiosity got the best of her.

She didn’t know there was a steaming hot pot of chaos brewing, on a low fire, and she was smack on top of it, Derrick as well.

As soon as Tia got off the phone with Riah, she quickly calls Kevin’s phone. He doesn’t answer. She sends him a text, “Hey baby, sorry I’m just not responding, I was with my mama, she had wanted me to take her to a doctor’s appointment. I stayed with her all night, is everything okay? Just call me.”

A strange feeling dragged itself upon Tia, as her heart beat a little quicker than usual. Kevin always answered her messages, and her phone calls no matter what he was doing. She started to doubt everything, as the unthinkable tormented her mind. What if this was the end of the road, and Kevin dropped the last straw and this was it?

Tia looks around at the life that consumed her, and the empire she was slowly building. What she was apart of was bigger than love, and no matter what she did to escape love’s tight embrace, she always managed a way to breakaway scar free. Her destiny didn’t require love, though it seemed—at first. With Kevin away, just for one second it seemed like an eternity of heartbreak. It was a feeling of abandonment. She never thought she would see the day he wouldn’t be there running to her every beck and call.

What an eerie feeling, a sensation of hopelessness, loneliness, and fear. Tia was so used to her mundane, mediocre life with Kevin.

Now she was feeling like she had taken him for granted, she knew he loved her but love just simply wasn’t enough, well for her at least.

One could hear the empty voices, lingering through the hollow walls. The silent muffled moans and screams of the women that were trapped there, hopeless and forgotten. Many had forgotten their strict upbringings and had lost their moral compass. They didn’t need that to get to where they were going. All of the women had one thing in common, an acute fear of feeling and experiencing love. Tia would teach every woman what she knew to be true. She wanted them to know love was a distraction an unreasonable compromise to throw you off balance.

Men didn’t know what love truly felt like, they didn’t suffer at the whims of broken hearts and emotional suffering. They were tactical and critical thinkers, using what they knew to get what they wanted at any cost. Tia refused to submit to Kevin, and that is why she trusted her instinct not to go back.

She made a pact with the devil, and neither Kevin, Riah, Derrick, nor Shaun could stop what was fate. Her feet were burning, being burned alive, as the flesh melted from the soles of her feet, soot and ash claimed her skin, as she faced a man sitting in a chair shirtless, pupils darkened with power. Her walk was beginning...
