36. The New Project

PART 36: The New Project

Working behind the scenes at Kevin’s restaurant was really giving Riah the experience and the drive that she needed in order to reach a new pinnacle of her success. Kevin had so many ideas that he wanted to incorporate for his restaurant and Riah was right there to guide him in the right direction.

“So you want a series of windows to stretch around the left side of the room, to bring attention to the view Downtown?” Riah goes through the blueprint, examining the details of the elaborate design. She takes a number two pencil from behind her earlobe, and twirls it between her fingers.

“This is a good idea Kevin, but...” She pauses, as Kevin made his way to her with a construction helmet, and safety goggles on looking ridiculously inexperienced.

Riah chuckles to herself, and revisits the large paper in her hand, as she walked to the gray foldable table in the corner of the unfinished room. It was a Saturday morning, and streaks from the sunlight peered inside, as they could hear the birds chirp happily, filling the room with a peaceful ambiance. This was a new dawn for Riah and she was at peace with herself because she finally really happy.

“—But what, what’s the issue?” Kevin looked down at the paper beneath him.

“Okay let me get the facts straight, you want to have this project completed in a month’s time, correct?” She taps the eraser of the pencil on the stretched out sheet. “Well it is nothing wrong with that, except we don’t have the necessary manpower to pull off your goal. I think it’s a damn good idea what you are doing with your restaurant.”

Kevin’s face told it all, as he rubbed his head. “So do I need to hire more contractors?”

“Yeah, I believe you do. I mean the team you have now is good, but in order for you to get the project done as quickly as possible, you need more hands. Well that’s just my two cents anyway, take it or leave it. Riah cased out the plan, viewing the perimeter of the room.

In Kevin’s heart he wanted to know what really happened that night at the club. But he knew Riah wasn’t going to spill her guts, not to him anyway. He wanted to cause a reaction. Kevin had been around Riah long enough to see what triggered her emotionally. He just coughed it up, a secret that twisted his mind for a few months now.

“So I recently found out Tia was a diagnosed sex addict.” He waited for Riah’s body language to talk.

“Yeah it’s true, but since she has been seeing her therapist, and taking her meds, she’s stabilized now.” Riah seemed like she wanted to puke, spraying lies and deceit into the air. But she felt like it wasn’t in her place to even give Kevin the real rundown. He picks up on her awkwardness.

“She still has some urges. I’ve been doing my investigations and I think she might be apart of a prostitution ring, like she’s running a whole business, auctioning young women.” Kevin put his hands in both pockets.

The moment was interrupted by an intrusion, a supervisor cracked open the door. “Um sorry to interrupt you Kevin, but we have an unruly customer that will not calm down, should I escort him and his party out?”

The woman who spoke was a black middle aged woman wearing black slacks, black heels and a silk like white buttoned down shirt. Her hair was in a sleek low ponytail. Riah could tell that she maintained her physique, she looked very good and well put together.

“Oh, my apologies Riah, I believe we have met once before. I am Shanice. I don’t know if you remember me?”

“Yes, I do. I believe we slightly brushed shoulders the first day I started. Nice to see you again, and you are looking good!”

“Thanks hun, and so are you.”

Shanice focuses back on Kevin, he said he wanted to speak to the owner of the restaurant, so that is when I came in to get you. It’s only breakfast and the day is already crumbling.”

“Don’t worry Shanice, I’ll handle this—and gimme a second Riah.”

Riah ponders Kevin’s statement about Tia. “Prostitution ring”? She thinks aloud, “What the hell?” She knew Tia had some few lose screws, but a whole underground illegal sex trade. That was a little extreme to her. She finished her measurements and she gathered her equipment.

Kevin walks out into the main dining area, only to see Shaun causing a ruckus. He couldn’t believe it was him, in all of his glory looking like a damn fool. It was ridiculous, Kevin didn’t want to escalate the situation. It appeared Shaun was drunk, sitting at the table with a woman who seemed to be uncomfortable in his presence.

“Boss man Kevin!” It was as if Shaun wanted to mock Kevin, but he was only making a spectacle of himself.

“Hey man, is everything okay? What seems to be the problem?” Kevin tried to remain professional in his establishment, he didn’t need to make a bad name for himself, especially behind Shaun’s ass.

“My omelette came out, but it wasn’t what I asked for. I said steak, ham and bacon, but I received sausage and ham. When I tried to explain the problem to that woman standing on the side of you, she gave me a bitch ass attitude.” Shaun scowled at Shanice.

“Well it’s no problem, we will get you a new plate, and your order is now on the house.” Kevin gave Shanice the nod to fix Shaun’s new order. Shanice rolls her eyes, moving around Kevin to get Shaun’s plate.

“Sorry about that, it’s probably a new waitress that did the mix up, I’ll talk to the servers later, is there anything else I can get you while you wait?”

Shaun’s eyes almost fell onto his table, as the ghost of Riah appeared in front of him. She even gasped. It wasn’t odd for them to run into each other, it was just really unexpected.

Riah stood in the walkway speechless for a moment.

Shaun’s voice sounded broken, calling out his estranged lover’s name. “Riah.”

The woman that sat next to him felt highly offended.

Kevin looked at Riah to see her reaction, wondering if he should’ve put him out just for the sake of her. But business wise it wouldn’t have been a good look on his behalf, especially being one of the most important role model restaurant. He had a Hollywood movie scene shot there, and from time to time famous celebrities, and even some powerful elites would dine there for a dinner and a show. Kevin clawed his way from the bottom to get in the Forbes list, front page two years in a row.

“I don’t have anything else to say to you Shaun.” Riah coldly stares at Shaun.

“Listen, I am truly sorry for leaving the way I did...”

The woman gets her things, and storm out of the door.

“Okay—“ She shrugged her shoulders, showing attitude and even fighting back. “I am really over everything now, and I suggest you build you a bridge, then get over it too.”

Kevin doesn’t want this little run in to become dangerous. The tension filled the air, and the people who were enjoying their breakfast all looked at the commotion, ready to topple over.

Shaun slightly moves his chair from underneath his table, slowly walking towards Riah.

“Kevin, I’m going to go now I left the blueprints on the table. I made a few additions, I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Kevin intervened, “Calm down Shaun you know as well as I do Riah is done. Give her some peace.”

It broke Shaun’s heart to see her walk out of the door, without thinking to even look back. He felt that it was too late for him, any love that she had for him was gone. He sits back down into the chair, scooting himself back up to the table with a puzzled look on his face.

“Shaun, we know you did this to yourself. And she still doesn’t know the full truth, cause if she did she would’ve fucked you up on site. You really feel like you are the victim in all of this?” Kevin was quite bemused.

“I’m a victim of your narcissistic, manipulative bitch! She changed me man—I’m not even the same person when I look at myself in the mirror. She took something from me. If you was smart, you’d leave too. That girl is no good, she’s fucked up bruh.” Shaun was beginning to have a mini crisis.

“No I think you preyed on her, you the one who destroyed your own relationship with Riah, don’t blame anyone for your actions, take accountability.” Kevin lowers his tone.

A waiter brings Shaun’s breakfast out, sitting the steaming hot plate in front of him.

“Kevin, I know we might’ve got off on the wrong foot early on, and I can admit it was mad childish. But Tia, man she is money hungry and she will do anything to get her hands on more of it. She is dangerous, that’s all I am saying. You think you know a person, but you don’t. She brings out the worst in people.”

Kevin completely ignored Shaun’s pleads. “Just listen to yourself man, you are full of it. Own up to your shit. Just admit you made a mistake, and move on. It’s simple.”

Kevin ended the awkward conversation, removing himself from the unwelcoming moment. He couldn’t believe Shaun was there, groveling in his resent. It was better than winning a first place trophy, and his whining definitely boosted Kevin’s ego.

Kevin gets outside of his restaurant, walking to his car something just hits him in the back of the head. It was a thought. Something that Shaun said triggered Kevin. He was absolutely right in a sense, he didn’t actually know Tia. When he thought about it there were no childhood pictures, she never discussed old memories that left a meaningful impact on her life. There was this void surrounding her, though he clawed and hammered, he still couldn’t penetrate beneath her seemly surface.

Just to test a theory, Kevin wanted to call Tia’s phone, to see if she would pick up. It went straight to voicemail as soon as it connected, but that is what he ultimately expected. To be quite honest Kevin didn’t know Tia’s whereabouts or what she did during her day. It did rattle a few of his bones. Not once has Kevin thought to check up on Tia, maybe he was overreacting.

Then he thinks back to Jamaica, she did take money out of his account and lied about doing it. He automatically assumed it was for her parents, but maybe there was something far more sinister, and darker. Kevin gets in his car with a sick feeling in his stomach, causing everything to close in on him at once. The ride to his house is a long one, as he is surrounded by conspiracies and allegations. Maybe the truth is stranger than fiction.
