31. Drowning Pains

Part 31: Drowning Pains

It has been a week since Riah has heard from Shaun. His belongings are still there, even his laptop is still sitting on top of his cold, deserted desk. Riah automatically assumes something is wrong. One morning she woke up and he just wasn’t there. There was no note, message or anything to rectify his selfish actions. She didn’t know how to feel or what to even think, the first thought that came to mind was, she only hoped he was safe and okay.

She went to his father’s house that same morning, to see if Shaun was there. Once she arrived she finds out that his father hadn’t seen him either. Whether that was true or not, she didn’t know; but she had to trust his words. Then she checked his office, strangely no one had heard from him as well.

Her world is crushed, destroyed. For nights she stayed up, searching hospitals and even county jails. Still there was nothing, it was like he had vanished in thin air. It was easily possible though, because he had enough financial stability to do so. He literally could go anywhere in the world if he wanted too.

Riah couldn’t accept it, or even wrap her mind around the fact that Shaun just left without a trace. She went over different reasons a thousand times in her head, maybe he was tired of waiting for her to start a family. Perhaps he was just tired of loving her. She had gotten boring for him and was draining his vibrant light. No matter what reasons she tried to make sense of, she never once thought Tia was the reason behind it all. For weeks no one called Riah, no one even attempted to visit her.

All of her calls and messages were unanswered. The only thing she wanted to soothe her anxiety was closure, even if it wasn’t the actual reason, anything would have been better than him not saying anything at all. She started to have flashbacks about the first time they’d met, and instantly created a bond, one that she hoped would last a lifetime. Then the tears just started flowing from her eyes, while looking at all of their photos that hung perfectly haunted her.

Shaun decorated a great deal of the place, so mostly everything was captured through his eyes. He was sort of artistic in a way, and as she walked around the oversized building, everything reminding her of him and his interests, and collections. He had a massive collection of literary books, various volumes that included a mass amount of different authors and their genres.

Riah really never paid much detail about her surroundings until now. Some things were even in foreign languages, it was amazing and yet sad how much of Shaun she really didn’t know. She often wondered what would’ve been her fate if she never came to school that day, or if Shaun never approached her in the courtyard.

Can a person be in a relationship with someone and they are so happy and into themselves they will fail to see their partner slipping away.

This went on for months, and Riah became so depressed and isolated. Her heart hurt every time it took a beat. Each breath she felt seemed like it would be her last. She was dying inside and none of her family members acknowledged it. They still pretended everything was fine, and though they tried to not mention anything she could tell they were treating her as like she was barefoot walking on eggshells.

Life was dull now, and Riah no longer cared for sunsets, she didn’t feel the need to even laugh anymore. School had become even tougher, due to the fact she was carrying weight from Shaun’s abandonment. There was even a tiny part of herself that still held on the possibility of him coming back to her, that is why she kept his ring on.

Things were surreal when she was alone. All she could do was sit and think about him every night. She missed his touch and the way she felt protected in his strong embrace. How could she detach herself from someone who forged their soul inside of hers? It was the way he looked at her, how he demanded her to let her guard down for him to penetrate her more deeply spiritually than anyone ever had.

She sometimes got upset and screamed. She just needed closure. What about the wedding and what about them spending a lifetime together? They were supposed to start a family and travel the world. His betrayal became apart of her life, and as the days went by the knife buried itself further and further into her back.

She gave Shaun so much, and somehow him leaving her proved it just wasn’t enough. She didn’t want to make him wait for her, she just thought what she was doing was the right thing. Never in a million years she would’ve thought of abandoning him.

The great news for Riah is even though her heart was compromised her mind wasn’t and her graduation was just right around the corner. She didn’t stop because her love life was ruined, in fact she was happy that she had some cushion to fall back on cause she fell hard. All of the time, and determination she put in was finally going to pay off. Though success was in her reach it still didn’t take away her suffering.

Tia and Kevin looked really good together. Tia invited Riah over for dinner, wanting to assess how much damage she had really caused. With Shaun out of the picture now she was the one winning with all of the attention on her. Tia had even picked her wedding day to be one weekend after Riah’s wedding date that she had to call off. This is the moment Tia had been dreaming of, to drive the love of her life away like she did with Derrick so many years ago.

Riah doesn’t feel like coming to the dinner, but Tia and Kevin insisted. Since her and Shaun’s disastrous separation all Riah did was go to school and go straight home to look at her eyelids. Sleep was the only thing helping Riah to cope with her sadness.

Riah finally agrees to Tia’s invitation, frantically throwing things around in her closet because it had been a century since she put on appealing clothes, or even fixed her hair. She walks into the walk her walk in closet and goes straight to her dresses. She moves hangers back and forth on the metallic pole, getting worked up with not finding a decent enough cocktail dress.

The dinner was scheduled for 8:30, looking at the time it was only 4:00 so he had enough time to make a quick run to the mall. Walking into the oversized trap, with stores in every corner she could feel the stares of people gawking at her. It was bad enough she had already felt self conscious wearing some black tights and a white fitted Nike shirt.

She had been crying all day, so to hide her baggy eyes she put on shades. Her ass looked exceptionally nice and plump, while she drug her white flip flops down the glossy floor. She tries to tune out the loud footsteps and the face paced shoppers, with their murmurs and loud disruptive children.

She hated going to the mall, but she hoped it would open up the opportunity for her to engage in human interaction. Besides the people she was surrounded by everyday at school were all the same, she just needed a breather.

She went into a few stores, looking at bags and shoes. Really she had forgotten what she actually came in for because she was so astonished by all of the pretty colors, and unique patterns. She feels the material of a sexy dress on a mannequin that’s on display. The texture was soft, and elegant. It was a simple black turtleneck sleeveless dress with one deep thigh split. Riah kind of felt happier to shop a little bit, to take her mind off of things. But then she forgot she just paid rent and her car note.

She took out her phone, hoping to guess the balance on her card. She estimated around the amount she thought would have. The total might’ve been around four hundred dollars left give or take, and that was needed to stretch in order to get her through the rest of the month. The good thing was she was graduating, but she didn’t have a job because she was a full time student. Since Shaun left, she had to find a way to support herself on her own. Even though the date wasn’t really too far away, she still wasn’t going to be able to work full time and go to school full time. It was impossible, no matter the entry level profession she chose, she still wouldn’t be able to afford the lifestyle Shaun provided for her.

She could’ve asked to move in with Tia, but that would’ve been a strain. Remembering how it was with both of them growing up in the house together was enough for her to live under a bridge, though she knew Tia wouldn’t have minded to say the least. Even if she could ask her parents, it would be extremely devastating given the fact they told her getting engaged with Shaun was not the best idea, and she was moving extremely too fast. How she wished she would’ve listened sooner. Crawling back to them on her hands and knees would just be a slap in her face, one that left a big red handprint at that.

Riah understood the seriousness of her situation and even though she still had the condo and the car, she knew she was going to have to eventually move and start from rock bottom. There was no way she could keep up with the rent and the car note by herself, let alone the utilities. Riah was practically homeless with no job experience, or people skills. This is what made everything horrible, she couldn’t believe Shaun did that to her. She tried to keep her dignity and sanity because if she forced herself to believe it was someone else that caused himself to abandon ship, she would lose herself to spite and anger.

Checking her balance, her mouth dropped. She had over $40,000 in her checking, and $20,000 in her savings. Riah thought it must’ve been a glitch, there was no way she could’ve had all of that money in her account. Her body froze while standing in front of the $50 dress, that she was contemplating whether or not she should purchase it about five minutes ago, and now her worries was just snatched from her with the click of a button. How could he?

She knew it had to been Shaun, and if he thought sending her money was some form of apology, he had another thing coming. She couldn’t believe he had access over her finances. This automatically made Riah want to contact him again after so many times of being ignored.

Scrolling through her contacts, she gets to his name, and looks at their photo together. Not once did she even think to delete him out of her phone. She hit the phone icon and waited for the dial tone.

***Shaun’s POV***

[Cellphone ringing, Riah’s face fills the screen]

Earlier that day Shaun thought about Riah again. He wanted to call and reach out to her, but his guilt wouldn’t let him. He wouldn’t be able to face her hurting eyes and keep a straight face. He grew tired of everything, except for her.

No matter if he broke up with Riah face to face, she still would somehow convince him to stay. Maybe one day he would tell her everything. But today wasn’t the day for it.

He put some money in her accounts, but he knew that wasn’t going to be enough to undo the damage he’d done to her. It took all of his willpower in him to not drive to her.

He had been doing his meetings and working from his hotel. Shaun couldn’t deal with his feelings internally, this was something new to him. Since he was a toddler he was always in the spotlight. Every man has an ultimate weakness, and if they refuse to learn how to control themselves they will suffer. Shaun knew his biggest issue was ego, and indulging himself in his own glory.

That is why he couldn’t deny Tia that night. The begging and the opportunity to feed his ego overpowered the love he thought he had for his fiancé. Seeing his phone ring knowing the truth he had to live with that decision he made for the rest of his life.

He slid his finger across the phone key to answer Riah’s call, but what could he say?

Riah instantly said his name in a shaky voice, “Shaun...?”
