For awhile everything had seemed to be going good. Shaun had graduated and started his career being a Software Developer. They had now moved in together into an exceptional condo to live as a couple. Of

course chasing success has its pros, but it also has its cons. With Shaun gone, Riah pushed even harder towards her degree. They were beginning to grow apart, but being so caught up in her own endeavors she barely noticed. They weren’t able to be as intimate with each other as they were in the beginning, and Shaun was starting to feel the effects of it. The fantasy was fading and reality was setting in. Riah’s parents and Tia weren’t to thrilled about Riah and Shaun’s sudden engagement, but they supported her anyway.

Riah on certain occasions would fly out to different cities scouting virgin lands to develop new projects. Shaun felt even more abandoned as he tried to voice his concerns about her long absences.

Shaun leans over the bar, in discontent,

“We never talked about you being gone for weeks at a time Riah.”

Riah defended herself, as she looked over the blueprints laid out in front of her, sitting at a small desk—

“This is something I have to do in order to get my name out there.”

Shaun still questioned, still wanting a solid answer,

“Why do you even have to do all of this? I make enough money to support our family!

Riah couldn’t believe he said that, she felt like he was being unfair, and unreasonable.

“It’s not about the money Shaun, this is my dream you are talking about.”

Shirtless and glistening from just finishing his morning run, he walks up to Riah bringing her to her feet, and kisses her neck softly;

“Have my baby. Right now.

Riah instantly shifts gears, her guard still impenetrable,

“Baby what are you talking about?”

Shaun still tries to woo the toughened Riah, and starts to embrace her body even more sweet talking her, putting his hand on her stomach, “We can start a family.”

Riah is now getting upset, “Shaun...stop it!” After I graduate, get my career started then we could be rational about this baby. But right now is not the right time, I was hoping you of all people would understand that.”

Riah’s words pierced through Shaun’s heart, he nods and kisses her seeing he couldn’t alter her mind on a child he told himself he would never mention it again. Shaun began to wonder, with Riah agreeing to marry him and build with him did she ever want children? He only assumed she would happily accept his request. They had never really talked about it, but now thinking back when he mentioned the idea a couple of times, Riah would deflect and change the subject.

Consciously realizing they both were on different paths, and they were going after different things bothered him. Ambition is a good trait to possess, but it will make you sacrifice so much and choose what is the most important thing in that moment for you. Shaun was beginning to witness Riah’s choice.

With Riah always gone, she only came home late nights, and sometimes every other weekend. A strain had gripped their new love, testing each lovers strength. A year and a half had passed and Tia and Shaun had inevitably started to form a bond. Tia still called Riah everyday, to give and receive advice.

Riah is finishing up a late night project, exhausted and hungry, she stops by a place to grab her and Shaun a bite to eat, then finally drives home. Tia messages Riah, asking her to come over, of course without a doubt she invites her. As she gets home she notices Shaun is not there, but Tia soon arrives. Tia looks more stunning each time Riah sees her, admiring her sex appeal Riah exclaims, “Wow is it Spring already cause damn girl you have blossomed!” Tia smiles, and hugs her sister tightly “Oh my God I have missed you so much girl! So what have I missed so far, what’s being going on in your world?”

Riah gives her that look, and Tia is tuned in. “Deets sis, deets.”

They begin laughing and talking, getting a few sips of wine and eventually eat the dinner that was supposed to be meant for her and Shaun. In the juicy midst of small girl talk, Riah was itching to tell her sister about the incident Shaun and her had a few days ago. It wasn’t heated but it was fresh on her mind.

Riah face is now shrouded in sadness. Seeing her sister’s energy change Tia asked what was wrong.

“Well Shaun is upset at me for bailing on him last Thursday afternoon. I had to stay in the office later than I expected, and forgetting about the arrangements he waited there for an hour until he had realized I wasn’t coming. But I forgot really. He never called or messaged me to remind me, so now I am wrecking my brain to see what I can do to make it up to him.” Riah sighs.

Tia sips the wine and eagerly ready to expel her opinions to Riah, “Girlllll he should understand that you have to follow your own dreams, and secure your own bag, no one is promised to stay in your life forever.”

Riah passively concurs. “That’s kinda what I’ve been telling him, he wants me to be the dainty little housewife, being dependent on him and under his shadow. He has been good to me so far, but I am starting to have second guesses about this marriage. I mean that is normal right?”

Tia looks at Riah, “Hell yeah, it’s okay to have mixed emotions and it is even okay to let your man lead but this isn’t exactly the 1950s anymore. If Shaun loves you he’ll be patient.”

Putting her glass down she looks at Tia with a concerned expression, “And also I am sorry to hear about your mother in law, she is getting worse.”

“What???? Shaun told me she had been ill, but not anything too serious. I was in New York when he told me they had rushed her to the emergency room, that was about three weeks ago. Riah is sad, but also infuriated. He could’ve told me.”

“He probably only assumed you were too busy, and he didn’t want to worry you, I mean that what you want?” Tia started to plant small seeds of guilt into the fertile Riah.

“No, that is not what I want at all. I want Shaun to know he can count on me to be there for him!”

“Well then perhaps it is ultimately up to you, and the position you want to hold in his life and yours.” Tia fills another glass of wine, studying Riah’s reaction.

“See bitch, this is why my ass is single now cause I’m too selfish to be tryna put other people before me. Hang in there girl.” Tia smiles, then they laugh and toast.

Becoming drunk off of the wine and emotions they both fall asleep on the couch, as Shaun comes in smiling. He lifts Riah’s body and places her in the bed, removing her pants. Then he grabs a blanket out of a closet and covers Tia. He was exhausted cause he had been at the hospital all day. Before he could walk off, Tia wakes up. “Don’t go.” She rubs her eyes.

Since Shaun had been checking in on her and his parent in laws, they’d occasionally chat about their goals, dreams and aspirations. Shaun looked at Tia just as if he would’ve had a little sister himself. Shaun walks over to the sofa. Cutting on a floor lamp he asks her, “Wassup sis, are you okay?”

“Yes I am, but it’s not me that is going through something right now, how are you holding up, how is Mrs. Henderson doing?”

“Well as of now she is holding on, she’s a fighter always have been. “Shaun has an uncertain smile on his face.

Tia touches Shaun’s hand, “Well I am here for you, remember that. Goodnight.”

Shaun smiles at Tia, and goes into his bedroom.
