5. Broken Silence

Learning a new truth about her sister filled her heart with joy, and unfortunately sadness. Kevin didn’t deserve Tia, whatever they were going through it wasn’t enough for him to treat her the way he did. It was unfair, Riah wondered how many other women lives Kevin had ruined? He was so bold and confident in his wrong actions it was scary. Riah didn’t want him to ruin her sister’s life. Maybe this time she could confront him, and even convince him to be a better spouse, but she didn’t want to in person. Since he proved to be unpredictable she didn’t know what would happen if they met face to face so she thought it would be better to talk to him over the phone. She would be the one in control of the situation this time.

Tia had to work on Thursdays and Kevin was off. Swallowing her pride she calls the phone. Each time it rings she gets a buzzing feeling at the pit of her stomach, feeling like she was a frightened child who had did something to displease her parents. He finally answered, the phone. Riah braced herself, her demons, and her own truth.

“Kevin we need to talk.” It feels like a frog is inside of Riah’s throat. She waited for Kevin’s response.

He gloated and was quite pleased that she had called him, but could tell by her tone she wasn’t going to talk about anything he fantasized about her saying. “Wassup Riah? You good?”

“Yes I’m good, I just wanted to have a civilized conversation with you, are you busy?”

He replies, “Nope.”

Riah continues desperately.

“I know we’ve been on bad terms for the past few weeks now. I just wanted to congratulate you and my sister again with the new edition to the family.”

Kevin pauses on the phone. “You know I wanna put my baby in you?”

Riah is not going to let him intimidate her anymore, not this time; stiffening her tone, she annoyingly continues, “Look man, I am done with your obsessive thoughts and crazy impulses. You are going to marry my sister, and raise my little niece or nephew. Do you not love Tia or is this all a game to you cause I know for a fact she loves you!”

“Oh she loves me huh? Is that really a fact cause if so why the fuck did she cheat on me with your ex Shaun?!!!” Kevin’s voice roared, blaring those sharp words into the phone.

You could hear a pin drop. For a moment there was silence. The words Kevin yelled crushed Riah’s soul. She had her suspicions about Shaun having an affair, but her sister couldn’t have been the cause of it— The end of her engagement of five years. Riah had now regretted calling him.

Riah had to brace herself, as unsettling all of it seemed deep down in her core she knew it was true. But still she denied it, “That is not true, Tia would never do that. You are unbelievable Kevin, why would you say a thing like that?!”

And for a moment Kevin could’ve stopped, but his rant violently erupted, burning Riah with his damning words.

“And [He chuckles] you know what the fucked up part is, everyone knew. Your mama, your pops, I mean everyone. I found out about the affair because my cousin saw Tia, my fiancé leaving a restaurant with Shaun. They were so nonchalant they were having dates in public. I confronted Shaun, and it got physical, I almost went to jail behind that shit.”

Tia felt like her heart had been ripped out her chest, feeling the cold falling tears roll down her cheeks. Was she that aloof? How could she not have seen the signs?

Kevin continued.

“So after I found this out, four years ago I felt sorry for you and I felt sorry for me. I wanted to tell you, but Tia has some type of grip on me. She manipulated me into thinking it was my fault, and somehow I had failed her. I was always faithful to her, I might’ve not been perfect but I gave her my all. I think she was eventually planning on leaving me. See you think you know her, but you don’t. I know the real her, and I doubt that baby is even mines. I know for a fact she is still seeing him, at least when she can anyways. Man Riah, the shit fucked me up; I am not exaggerating. I started following her, going through her phone and I even worst of all tried to deny the truth, even though it was right in front of me.”

Kevin could hear Riah’s muffled cries, now realizing he reopened a healed wound that was now even bigger. He knew that feeling all to well and how damaging it felt. The only difference between both of them was, he was living a lie and Riah didn’t see the truth.

Maybe the truth is too much to bare, to acknowledge. The whole time Riah is trying to protect her sister, and do the right thing she purposely stabbed her in the back. She didn’t know why Kevin told her all of this, she just hated him even more now. Was she a victim of some sick and twisted revenge plot?

Feeling empty and emotionally disturbed Riah hangs up the phone, and goes into the kitchen and takes three shots of liquor. She brings the bottle into the living room with her, now in complete darkness. She receives several message alerts from Kevin, unable to think she cuts her phone off.

Riah didn’t want to hear anything from anyone, a fiery raged pumped through her veins, though that was on the outside; inside she was shattered to tiny pieces. Doubt and uncertainty danced around her brain, there were so many questions to be answered. Could both of her parents known this terrible truth, or was Kevin just playing with her emotions and said that to put icing on the cake? How long were they seeing each other, and were they out and about publicly? It just didn’t make any sense.

Riah continued to drink out of the bottle, slowly intoxicating herself made her feel even worse. Her unstable hurt feelings intensified as she dampened her mood even more playing songs about heartbreak and betrayal. There was no one she could talk to and vent about her issues. Perhaps a neighbor, but even that seemed far fetched. For the first time in her darkness and grief she realized that she was alone, and isolated. She didn’t know how much of herself she effortlessly sacrificed to please others. She never noticed it. She never noticed her life and everything she ever did revolved around her family, which caused her to miss out on the most important part—herself.

Once the tears ran dry, with the dry streams along her face, her laptop now dead, and the after taste of the bitter poison filled her mouth the room was no blurry. An eerie silence was the loudest thing that was heard echoing through the walls. The only thing left to do is ball up in the fetal position with a blanket wrapped around her tightly and cry, she cried until she fell asleep.

**Broken Silence**

Riah’s boss ordered her to take a forced paid vacation. Though he didn’t know what was going on with Riah, one of the top architects at his company he figured there had been an untimely death in her family, and she of course needed personal time to grieve.

Coming into the office Riah looked drained, she had dark bags under her eyes. Her hair was in a messy than messy bun, and her clothes gave everything away. As she walked purposeless and aimlessly through the hallway, eyes ogled her and whispers began.

Her work no longer occupied her from her chaotic life. All of her co workers noticed the sudden change in her. Everyone at the company knew Riah wasn’t one to slack or even half step her projects, so of course naturally everyone started to gossip about her episodes. This made the wound ten times worse.

Grabbing her laptop and briefcase off of her desk, her boss tells her to take all the time she needed. “Riah everyone is extremely concerned about you. You are a huge asset to this team. Whatever it is, don’t let it consume you. You are in charge of one our largest projects with a very lucrative clientele. This next exhibit will either expand our brand tremendously or ruin our reputation.”

The words that glided off of her boss Jason’s tongue fell on deaf ears.

Boss: “So I will contact you in a week Riah to see how you are holding up, take care of yourself.”

She numbly walks out of the oversized office not saying a thing, she really was just pissed that he sent her home. Riah was losing herself, beginning to fade into the dark corners of nothingness. She now felt the freezing grips of what she’d known as reality rip into shreds. Getting into her car she wondered if she should go back, she couldn’t help but to think how it felt to start over and the rush she manifested just lusting about it. Leaving the parking lot, her phone begins to ring. It’s Tia.
