29. Atonement

PART: 29 Atonement

Riah just could not find out about the video, the fight, or any of the fuckery that was going on. Shaun knew he was going to have to make a pact with Kevin and Tia to cover their tracks. Even though there wasn’t any physical evidence of Tia’s and Shaun’s infidelity, the clues were still there. If Ashley or Derrick said anything to anyone in their family, Shaun knew it would eventually get to Riah.

Shaun was starting not to feel so confident about the wedding now, as he goes home to Riah. But due to his turn of luck, she wasn’t there. He didn’t have many visible war wounds, only a ripped white shirt and bruised, bloody knuckles.

He went inside of his medicine cabinet, took out the antiseptic and ointment and wrapped his knuckles tightly with a white gauze and clear tape. He had already thought of a lie to tell Riah. But the truth was, Shaun started to grow weary of all of the excuses and never ending lies he was bombarding Riah with. Shaun is sitting on the couch, and he gets a phone call from a private number. He didn’t think it was a good idea to answer it, but with his curious mind he answered it anyway.

A disguised voice spoke, “Your time is up Shaun. Call the wedding off. You have 96 hours to pack up everything you own and never speak to Riah again.” The phone clicks.

Shaun was speechless, and it was evident that he was running out of time. He only had four days to break up with Riah, even after everything happened with them. He only thought what if they were right? He couldn’t live with himself knowing at any given moment Riah would find out the truth.

He sat there for the longest time, really debating if he should throw in the towel. He was at a point where he was tired of fighting. It was clear to him Riah’s family was dysfunctional.

He must’ve went over the words a thousand times, though they were in his head, he just couldn’t bare the thought of them coming from his lips. The thing that was going to hurt the most is Riah’s face, not understanding why. He asked himself if he should make love to her one last time before he ended everything, or would they be heartless.

Usually Shaun could easily break it off with any other girl. But Riah wasn’t just any girl to him, she was extraordinary, and one of a kind. He couldn’t bare thinking about not waking up next to her, hearing her loving voice call out to him in a loving tone. Hard or not it was clear to him what path he had to take, and it would be one he traveled alone.

Maybe the saying is true about all good things coming to an end. There are mistakes one simply cannot atone for, no matter what Shaun’s idea of making things right with Riah, it still wouldn’t be enough.

Some part of him felt like a scared little boy, trapped in a dark closet alone. It’s funny how when a man grows up, the closet can become his life, except the monster is him.

Riah walks inside. She looks more beautiful than ever, sparkling in her own radiance. She is carrying some groceries, and a couple other things. Shaun gets up to help her with the load.

“Is there anything else in the car?” Shaun asks Riah taking the bags out of her hand, and putting them on the island.

“Yes babe, only a few other things. Thanks for the help.” She smiles gleefully, standing on her tiptoes to give Shaun a kiss.

Shaun smiles, but it was a sad one if you had ever seen one. The safest thing he could do right now was walk outside, out of Riah’s face to contemplate even more.

He goes outside, downstairs losing his focus. His heart was bleeding, sliced open at it was him that had the knife. He felt like fighting again, anyone or anything. He just needed to escape from that moment.

He finally makes it to the car, getting the rest of the bags. Then suddenly he has a flashback of his mother crying in the corner. He could feel the pain she endured. It was his dad, leaving both of them for another woman. He was glad he was there to comfort her, but it is something about a mother’s tears soaking up her son’s shirt.

But Riah, his sweet innocent love, she will have no one to vent too and share her heartbreak with. The only thing Shaun could hope for now was the love she had for him was a fluke. He admired her resilience and courage. She was going to rise, and become greater than he could ever imagine without him.

Riah runs to the balcony, and screams at her Shaun, “Baby, I’m thinking Mexican down?” She cheeses down at him, while he looks up.

“Sure, whatever you’s cool.” Shaun headed back upstairs to the condo.

“Remember Ashley is supposed to be coming over here Thursday to go over our colors, and seating arrangements. Would you like to help me with the planning? I know it’s kinda not your thing, but I wanted to ask you just in case.”

Riah takes out a cutting board to chop some fresh vegetables.

“I don’t know.” Shaun walked over to the garbage can, removing the empty bags and plastic from the surface.

“It’s cool, no pressure—you know it’s not about what you want anyway, technically it’s my day.” Riah rolled her eyes and crossed her arms, sticking out her tongue.

Shaun adores Riah, watching her prep dinner.

He sits up at the countertop across from her.

“Hey baby I almost forgot, did y’all find Tia’s phone?” She stops her intense chopping and looks up at Shaun.

Here it was, the lie forming out of his mouth. “Yeah, as a matter of fact we actually did. We got to the location, but the phone was completely damaged.”

“I bet Tia wanted to cry, she has never lost or broke her phone not one day in her life. It’s kinda odd.” Riah continues chopping away.

Shaun’s mind is foggy, knowing he only had a few days with his beautiful queen. He wanted to touch her body, make her lose all control in the kitchen. It would be such a pleasing scene for him. But something is holding him back. He just can’t gather any confidence to seduce her.

Riah didn’t deserve this fate. He promised to give her the world. She was his everything. How could he try to make love to her at a time like this, knowing she would never have any of his children. He was certain that he ruined her life, and his.
