Rewrite the Stars

Sophia comes from a rich, high class family. Her father is a world renowned brain surgeon, and expects his daughter to follow in his footsteps. However, Sophia's true passion is to sing.
Jake, on the other hand, does not have money and lives in a very small, bare apartment. His mother is sick and isn't able to work, so the only way they are able to get by is through Jake's music. He busks in the street for money, and occasionally plays small gigs in bars.
This is a story of what happens when two completely different worlds collide.

Since a lot of this story revolves around music and songwriting, I will be mentioning some song titles throughout the story. I'll use songs that exist in real life in various points in this story if they fit into the scene. Obviously this is fiction, I'm not trying to claim that these songs are actually my own.
Example - 'Fix You' by Coldplay was mentioned as one of Jake's original songs. In this story, the lyrics were written for his mother.

Sophia's POV

We sit down in the coffee shop together, talking about our lives and getting to know each other. I can't help staring into his eyes. Their beautiful, bright blue colour was mesmerising to me. The sound of his laugh and the way his curly brown hair flopped over his face was so beautiful. We instantly clicked together. It somehow felt like we had known each other our whole lives.

"So, I'd like you to explain to me how you came to have £100 in your pocket; and why you just threw it away like it was nothing. If you don't mind me asking that is..." He says.

"Well, like I said, I don't want you to think I'm bragging or anything. My father is Dr Derek Johnston..." I say, slightly embarrassed.

"Wait...the surgeon? Like....THAT Dr Derek Johnston?" He says in shock.

"Yup, THAT one. As you can probably imagine, he's the main source of the income. But please don't think that the money defines me or means anything to me at all. You have no idea how much I wish he wasn't the person he was sometimes to be honest..."

"I don't think that of you Sophia, don't worry." He touches my hand in reassurance. We look at each other in shock and he quickly takes his hand away. I could see his cheeks start to blush and I let out a little giggle to reassure him not to be embarrassed.

Then he says "My father left us 5 years ago...and my mother has been in and out of hospital ever since with cancer." I could hear a croak in his voice as he said that to me. Suddenly I felt sick to my stomach. I just complained about having two rich parents to his face. I just told him I wished my father wasn't who he was, unaware that he basically didn't have one at all. On top of that, his mother was sick and clearly unable to work so they obviously didn't have much money. I felt terrible.

"I'm so sorry...I had no idea..." I mumble

"Don't apologise, it's not your fault. I've actually never spoken about this with anyone probably think I'm really weird for suddenly dumping on you on the first day we meet. I'm sorry. But I guess now you know why I appreciated that £100 so much..." He replies

"I feel awful, Jake....I don't want you to think I'm some self obsessed, whiny bitch complaining about problems that are completely insignificant compared to yours."

"Hey, everyone's problems are significant to them. I told you I don't think you're that kind of person...I actually think you're really sweet and kind."

I just smile at him.

"I love music too; I sing...secretly" I mutter

"Really? Why is it a secret? I bet you have a beautiful voice." He says excitedly.

"Well, my father would pretty much disown me if he knew that I wanted to be a musician instead of follow in his footsteps and become a doctor. He actually forced me to apply to medical schools this morning...but I'm also secretly considering sending applications to music schools as well. I'm just terrified of how he will react if he were to find out."

"I think you should do it. Music helped save me when I was at my worst, and it will save you too. You're in control of your life and your future, nobody else." He grabbed my hand again, but this time when our eyes met, he didn't pull away. We stared deep into each other's eyes for a moment. A moment that felt like hours. The world around us seemed to stop and time no longer existed in that moment. For the first time in my life, I was with someone who understood me and made me happy. I was already falling for him.

Before I could open my mouth to thank him, my phone began ringing. It was my mother. I quickly release Jake's hand and answer the phone.

"Sophia, where are you? I'm outside the shopping centre, on my way to the car." She responds

"Oh...yeah...sorry mum. I'm just in the coffee shop around the corner. I'll be with you in a minute."

"Okay, honey. Hurry, please."

"Okay, bye."

I hang up the phone and put my coat back on.

"Sorry, Jake, I have to go home." I say, standing up.

"It's okay. Will I see you again?" He asks, standing after me.

I write down my number on his napkin and hand it to him.

"Call me." I say, smiling at him.

Just as I'm about to leave he calls my name. I turn around to find him giving me a hug. Normally this would seem insane, considering we just met about 2 hours ago. However, the connection I felt with him was unlike anything I'd ever felt. We said our goodbyes, and I went back out to meet my mother. My stomach filled with butterflies from the moment we met, and I continued to have this feeling for the rest of the day. For the first time in a long time, the smile on my face was finally a real one. Jake was my opportunity to truly be happy.
