One scream at a time

The world did not end with a bang or a whisper but rather one scream at a time.
Lila hates missions to the outside world, for two main reasons: 1) The outside world is dangerous and filled with scary things. 2) she would much rather be curled by the artificially generated fire with a good book. So why does she go to one of the most prestigious schools for missions in The Dome?
Will she ever get together with the beautiful Genevieve? and when handed information important for the survival of the human race should she pass it on or let humans peacefully die out?
.... what? I'm not going to tell you now. I'm not going to spoil it for you, you've got to find out for yourself

4. Home Sweet Home

Buzz, buzz. SCHOOLS OUT! As soon as the final buzzer sounds Lila swoops up her backpack up and skids out. It’s already night, the cool air picking up the tips of Lila’s dark hair and taking them for a dance. Looking up, the familiar sight of The Dome’s artificial night sky twinkles hello. A software created to reassure citizens and make them feel safer. Lila has never seen any other sky.

The School of Light lies near the edge of the Dome on top of a great mound, from here you can see the whole city twinkling in the distance. She pants, running is definitely not her forte, but she had to escape, another run in with her class mates was to be avoided at all costs. The number of backpacks that have been grinded into the artificially generated dust is testament to that. Home? can she face the empty rooms just yet. Nope. The answer decided she pushes on, climbing the dusty mounds that surround the edge of the dome. Through a hole and out onto the other side.

The room that appears looks kinda like a cave, there is rocky wall’s and a hard-craggy floor. The walls are dotted with posters and drawings, mementoes of Lila’s time here. There are several piles of books stacked against the walls and in the corner a pile of blankets. Surprisingly there are no electrical devices drilled into the walls (which most houses in this city contain many.) Lila has long gotten bored of the endless happy programs about the finding of the new planet that are constantly on. She prefers books, her teenage brain needs a little pinch of suffering to relate to.

When’s mum coming back? she pulls out her phone. Scrolling past all the cheerful stories generated to cheer up the mood of the populous and straight to the calendar. 2 days left. She doesn’t know how to feel, on one hand it’s always nice to have company. On the other side Maria Olivia Ronaldo has never been the most supportive mum.

She tried, of course she tried. Every mother loves her child and Maria is no exception. But 15 years of Lila showing no interest in the things she loved, kind of neutered her enthusiasm. As soon as Lila was old enough she enrolled her in her school. The one she worked so hard to build. Every time she came back from her missions her first question was always: “How’s school?” hoping hope against hope that Lila would have finally accepted her genes and buckled down. So, she could be the best asset to The Dome as possible.

The Dome is Maria’s life, she was born in the outside world. From a young age she believed that nuclear button would be pressed, and she spent her early years campaigning for nuclear disbarment. No one paid any attention to her, she was just a silly little girl with silly ideas, “No one would be stupid enough to set off the bombs,”. So, Maria cut her losses, and left for England, where the Dome was being built. She never looked back. Lila was Maria’s experiment to see if her genes could create something as good as her. She wasn’t vain just realistic or at least, that’s what she told herself.

So, the experiment had failed she left Lila to do whatever she wanted, which mostly consisted of reading. To be fair Maria bought all the books Lila requested, but never tried to understand her. Not once. Maria was never good at wearing other’s shoe’s, she liked her own too much.

Of course, she was going to get teased tomorrow for her messy hair and the same clothes. Lila knew sleeping in the cave wasn’t going to do her any favours. But she was going to get teased tomorrow anyway, and at least here she would get some sleep. the innocent sleep, sleep that knits up the ravelled sleeve of care, The death of each day’s life, sore labour’s bath, balm of hurtness… natures food… With these words drifting through Lila’s head she gently falls into a deep dark sleep…
