13. Chapter 12

Joseph’s POV

“What took you three-years?” Ellie asks as I approach her. She wraps her arms around my neck, causing me to smile.

“Michael was stuck in traffic.” I kiss her lips and pull away, “So, what’s the plan for today?”

She lightly hums as if she is thinking. I bite my bottom lip. Okay, so I guess I’m excited. This is Ellie and I’s first date that’s not sex. Literally, all we do is have sex. Today should be something that we both can remember and think about in the future.

“How about we go down to the bar where the boys are at? You know, get some drinks, eat, dance – “

“Sounds like a plan.” I smile. She giggles and grabs my hand, guiding me towards this pub she’s talking about.

As we walk to the pub, my phone dings. I pull it out of my pocket and Jacki reads the text out loud in her lady-like robotic voice.

“Text from Tuck; Dude, slut city down at the pub.”

Slut city? What pub is she taking me to? A strip club or something? I ignore my questions and reply.

“Reply; What do you mean?”

“Ok,” Jacki responds and sends the text to Tuck. Seconds later, another text from Tuck appears.

“Text from Tuck; That Quinn girl is dancing like a total slut right now.”

Ellie makes a humming noise. I shove my phone in my pocket and continue walking with her.

“Quinn Diaz, huh?” She says.

“What about her?”

“She’s something else.”

“Oh – no, this girl is beyond something else.”

I can feel her smirk as a doorbell dings and we open it. Some song from the radio I don’t know the name of is blasting. Ellie continues to guide me places.

“There they are!” She shouts over the music. Eventually, we reach the table full of our friends.

Tuck, Geo, and Harvey greet me like they always do. Theo and Alex greet me awkwardly considering we aren’t exactly that close. And Dale lightly punches my shoulder. I wrap my arm around Ellie and we sit in the booth chatting about what-not.

“Look at them – this is just uncomfortable.” Theo gags. I’m assuming he’s talking about his sister.

“I know what she’s doing – she’s trying to make me jealous.” Dale scoffs.

“Am I the only one who thinks that’s beyond hot? I mean, Quinn and Sierra? The hottest girls in school grinding on each other?” Alex squeaks.

Quinn meets the hottest girl requirements? I mean I know Sierra meets the requirements, but Quinn? Let alone they’re currently grinding their lives away. I kind of want to see it.

“I mean, it’s hot – but that was Dale’s ex. We should lay off.” Geo suggests. Harvey agrees with him.

“Well,” I start, taking my arm out from behind Ellie and clapping my hands together, “Thank god I can’t see her.” I lie. Ellie giggles when I say this,

“Well, Sierra has an exception because she’s pretty cool and all.” Ellie states “But that Quinn girl...”

Everyone starts to laugh including me. The song changes to something I’ve heard play in Jenny’s room. I take a sip of whoever’s drink – I don’t know – then feel a slight buzz. It tastes like a martini – but how the hell would they get a martini in a bar underage?

“How did you get this?” I ask, sucking the insides of my cheeks while cocking my head. Shit tastes good.

“Actually, I got a fake ID.” An unfamiliar voice says. I cock my eyebrows.

“Who’s talking...?”

“I’m sorry – who are you?” Ellie asks the guy. I can hear Alex squeak.

“Oh, me? I’m just the guy who booked this table before you fools came and stole it.” His accent is French.

“What?” Harvey asks in a confused tone. I sit up straight and look ahead.

“Funny story – I paid for this table.” He protests. I clear my throat and do what I’m best at,

“Sorry, but I believe my friends and I are enjoying an evening out at the table we reserved. Maybe you got it wrong?”

“Actually – look,” He says. I can’t see what he’s showing me because I’m fucking blind if he hasn’t noticed.

“Table 42...that’s this table. Theo, what table is on your ticket?” Dale asks.

“Let me check....” He pauses, “Fuck.”

“What?” I say, annoyed. He clears his throat.

“Table 24...”

“Dude!” Tuck scoffs.

“Sorry! Alex was the one who told me!”

“What! Okay, maybe that did happen...” Alex says.

I raise my hand to shut everyone up. Not surprisingly, they do. I scoot out of the booth and stand next to this dude and poke him to make sure he’s next to me. My finger pokes his chest – which is really hard going damn.

“Look, I’m blind. I can’t see you, but I would like to inform you that no one here is going to cause harm unless you make us.” I reason with him.

“Wait – you’re blind?” His French accent asks.

“No – “ I say sarcastically, “Yes, I’m blind.”

“That’s great because you’re who I am looking for. Joseph Caddy, right?”

Everyone in the booth begins to mumble to each other. I cock my head to the left. How the hell does this guy know my name, that I’m blind, and what does he want with me?

“What do you want?” I ask aggressively, getting in his face.

“I saw you on a site where kids are looking to see again. It’s 200$ per sample. Each sample allows you to see for a good ten minutes.”

What? No. This isn’t real. I look in the direction of the table like I am looking for their opinions. Of course, my dumb ass can’t see them, but maybe it will be worth a shot.

“What’s your name?” I ask him.

“Darian. Darian Catmael. I’ve just moved from France to Fort Collins for a year. I’ll be transferring to Jaxon high if you’re wondering.”

Okay, another French foreign exchange student. This is just great. At least he’s not a revenge seeker in heels like Sierra. I smile, and I think I might go for this.

“How do I know I can trust you?” I ask him. Ellie stands up next to me and grabs my arm. I really want to know what she looks like.

“Hmm...you don’t. But your friends can.”

A video starts to play, and I can hear the praising noises from my friends. I stand my ground and still look at Darian. He’s not easy to see because he’s not wearing one little bit of white.

“Dude, that’s so cool!” Alex gushes.

“I’d say it’s worth it.” Theo states.

“It looks kind of dangerous,” Ellie says.

“Go for it.” Geo and Tuck harmonize.

Before I accept an offer like this, I think about what could go well, and what could go wrong with this. First of all, I would be able to see my smoking hot girlfriend. The cons seem minimal. Maybe the danger part is all, but I want to think about the pro’s and the pro’s only.

“Let’s do this.”

Darian has me sit down. Music is still blasting...okay we’re doing this in public? I pull out the cash from my pocket and tell Harvey to give him the right amount. I ain’t no scammer and he shouldn’t either. Harvey hands me my remaining cash and I shove it back into my pocket.

“That’s a long-ass needle dude.” Ellie gasps, squeezing my wrist. A needle? Fuck.

“What? My boy isn’t afraid of needles, is he?” Darian questions grabbing my other wrist and swabbing it with some wet napkin.

“No, do it.”

He laughs and suddenly, he plunges the needle in my arm causing me to swallow hard. Needles don’t hurt, it’s more of a slight metallic pain like two magnets are inside of you. Someone swipes off my glasses and sets them aside.

“Did it hurt?” Dale asks, groping my shoulder.

“No.” I lie. It felt like pain – but I can handle it.

“Good.” Ellie kisses my cheek.

I sit and blink. Nothing. I see nothing. Did I really just trust a total stranger? My fists clench together as I start to get light-headed.

“What’s going on with – “Harvey is interrupted by Darian.

“Don’t worry, it’s working.”

Suddenly, I see a face. It’s Darian’s. He has hazel colored eyes, dark tan skin, a line of freckles across his face, and dark brown hair. I smile in disbelief. I can see! Then I see Alex. He’s blonde and very tan with a Muppet-like nose. Theo has the sharpest jawline, it could cut me.

Dale looks like your average JV lacrosse captain. Tuck is very buff like I remembered. Geo is almost stunning, and Harvey looks like a little blonde baby. Our setting is in a vibrant colored bar. I look down at my hands, they’re light tan.

“Well...?” Ellie asks. I turn to her.

She has fiery red hair – tan skin, and brown eyes. She is pretty, but not as pretty as I imagined. Her outfit includes a flowery romper and a floppy hat. I guess she is pretty cute.

“You look beautiful,” I say, kissing her lips. She looks like she’s about to cry as a smile arises on her face.

“You can see!” She exclaims.

“For 10 more minutes...” Darian reminds, turning off the recording on his phone. He recorded my happy moment.

“Send that to me,” I demand. Darian nods.

I trusted a stranger, but this time trusting a stranger went right. I hope there aren’t any side effects because that would suck ass. I haven’t seen my reflection in forever.

“Guys, I’m going to use the restroom. Where is it?” I ask. This is probably the politest manner I have ever been in for a while.

“Oh, it’s over there –“Alex points across the dance floor.

His finger is supposed to be pointing to the bathroom, but something else catches my eye. She is vibrant, graceful, and beautiful. A girl is dancing with her best friend like they own the world. One of the girls looks at me, then at the person beside me – which is Darian.

“Oh my god!” I see her mouth. Her face doesn’t look very pleased.

She storms over to us and her best friend gives her a confused look while trailing behind. The girl looks at Darian with the most confused face ever. He smiles down at her – more like a smirk.

“Darian?” She asks – the voice is suddenly familiar. Sierra La’fair.

Which, to be more descriptive, she has long brown hair, lightly tanned skin, brown eyes, and just a perfect complexion.

Bonjour Sierra.” He greets as he takes her hand and kisses it. His eyes trail to the person behind her.

Oh god, please don’t be who I think you are.

“Who is the lovely lady you are with?” He asks her, nodding at the girl.

Please no. Please don’t –

“This is Quinn Diaz. My boyfriend’s sister.”

My mouth drops open and Quinn gives me a dirty look. She is so damn beautiful. Her hair is long and black. The skin on her revealing body is as fair as snow whites. She has every physical feature perfect, and she seems to be checking me out too.

“Quinn...?” I say, standing up. I can feel Ellie stand with me.

“What? You act like you’ve never been near me before.” She grumps with a pissed off face. Even when she is pissed off, her features still stay perfect.

“You look nothing like I expected.”

“What?” Ellie says, looking up at me. I turn to the side and look at her, then back at Quinn.

“Wait – you can see?” Quinn asks, surprised. I nod at her with my mouth still open. Theo walks up next to Quinn and pulls her back.

“Yeah, this guy I just met helped me,” I say, still shocked at her appearance.

“Wait – you trusted a random stranger?”

“Okay...you can stop checking out my sister – “

When they stand together, a pang of realization and happiness floods through me. They are twins. The resemblance is almost unbearable. The fair skin, brown eyes, black hair, cat eyes – it’s all the same.

“Ew – god Theo.” She slaps him on the arm and scoffs.

“What? He was obviously checking you out.” He states.

Okay, I was – am checking her out. She’s hot as hell, but this doesn’t give me a reason to like her. Maybe her looks are the only likable thing about her. I have a girlfriend; her name is Ellie. She may not be the prettiest, but she’s all I have for right now.

“No – I’m not checking her out. Simply just surprised to see that she turned out uglier than I thought she would be.” I lie. Her face shifts into a sad, depressed look. “I have a girlfriend right here who’s perfect for me.”

Ellie scowls at Quinn and wraps her arms around me. Sierra scoffs and Quinn looks defeated. When my mouth is on Ellie’s, my eyes are wide open and looking to the side. I watch as Quinn storms off with Theo and Alex chasing her. Dale looks like he wants to run after her, but he swallows another glass of alcohol to keep him from going.

“Wow, you are a dick,” Sierra states, picking up the martini from the table, taking a sip, and tossing the liquid all over me. It’s cold and icy. The sound is drowning out around me because it’s so cold. I hear Ellie yell something at Sierra, but I can’t make out what it is.

“You – “her eyebrows furrow at Darian, “Meet me outside in ten minutes.”

The last thing I see is Ellie’s face and some napkins cleaning me up. After that, everything goes back to normal.

Me seeing nothing.
