1. Night in Manhattan-Part One

The man's dead body was found off 131st street, and 7th Avenue in New York. Detective Gordon Harrison smoked a cigarette. He stubbed it out with his black, polished, shoe on the hot concrete. He wore a faded, tan hat on his head. He was wearing a grey suit, black socks, and black shoes on his feet. "Who was he?", he asked Detective Jenny Kendall. "I don't know, boss", she answered. He checked the body. "There's no ID. No wallet, nothing. Maybe the killer stole them before he walked away. There's stab wounds in the chest. And a lot of blood", Detective Harrison said. He was about to wait for the Coroner to arrive, when a woman ran towards the body. "Chad! Chad!", she yelled. Tears fell down her lined face. "Ma'am, I'm Detective Harrison. And my partner, Detective Kendall. Who is he?", he asked her. "Chad V. Mark, III. He was a police informer. Someone killed him because he knew too much about corruption in the New York Police Department. I'm Larissa Mark, his wife". She shook her head. "If the victim is your husband, we'll get the killer", Detective Kendall said. Larissa shook her head. Suddenly there was a black limousine coming towards her. "I have to leave". Detective Harrison nodded, then he waited for the Coroner before it was too late.

Coroner Daniel James, MD, arrived on the scene. "It's bad, isn't it", he said. "Yes, it is", Detective Harrison stated. "There's been three other murders over the last month or two", Detective Kendall added. He shivered from the cold, as he put on her black gloves of a small hands. "Once the forensics team arrives, we can secure the area", he said. And he drank some coffee, while dark clouds hovered above his head.

"The victim is Chad Mark, thirty-seven. He is a lawyer. The time of death is 5:30 AM, yesterday", the Coroner said. Detective Harrison waited. Then, as the wailing sirens of the ambulance arrived, he saw the paramedics were waiting to do their job.

Detective Harrison shuddered. He was used to serial killers. Detective Kendall said: "We have to catch him. Or her, before it's too late". He stopped drinking, then threw it into the silver trash bin. "We'll do that. I promise you". And he gazed at the blackened sky. Then it begun to rain heavily.

Detective Harrison yawned. By Midnight, he was still at the crime scene. Bright lights illuminated the area around the dead body. "Okay, it's eight o'clock in the evening. We'll go to the New York Morgue tomorrow. Right now, we'll have dinner". And the body was taken away in the ambulance, Detective Harrison, Detective Kendall, and the Coroner, walked to their cars, and drove towards Randal's Hamburger's, which was on 131st street, and 6th Avenue.

Anne Thomas walked towards Central Park. She wore a grey sweater, grey pants, black socks, and grey shoes on her feet. Suddenly she received a text on her I-phone. "Meet me at your place at 9.30 pm. Love, Larry". She smiled. Before she could type back, she saw a stranger watching her. "Late night to go jogging", he said. Anne backed away. "Leave me alone". The man laughed. "Officer Cal Loman. New York Police Department". Anne gazed at him. "The police have better things to do than to frighten single women". He nodded. "There's a serial killer on the loose. And I intend to stop him". Anne stopped walking. "There's a lot of homicide detectives here earlier. And the coroner". Officer Loman nodded. "I know. But I intend to catch him before it's too late. Hey, do you want to go to get some pizza? My place is nearby. And I'll keep you safe". Anne thought about it. "Yes, fine. I'm drenched". She got into the back of the police car, closed it, and put on her black seat belt. Officer Loman opened the driver's-side door, and drove towards his apartment off 131st street, and 7th avenue. By 9:30 PM, he used his I-phone app to order from Pizza Hut, and ordered two large Mexican pizzas, garlic bread, and two large Pepsis. Once the order was complete, he smiled, and focused his attention on Anne.

Detective Harris smiled. "There's a time in which all cops needed a break from the job due to stress, and their personal lives. I wanted to be a cop because my father also served two decades ago". He watched her smile...as Anne hoped that she would be saved from the killer's fury.
