The Dead Friend

The genderflipped version of a story I wrote on my blog Stories in 5 Minutes. While Michael Lowery, Sadie Green, Isaac Hammond, and Paul Turner are recovering from the death of their best friend and ringleader Taybor Parks, they receive a letter from a mysterious person. Could it be that Taybor is still alive?

1. The Dead Friend

“Dear friends, I am not dead. Meet me at the Eminence Theatre on Tuesday at 8PM. ~Taybor Parks.”

Sadie Green, Michael Lowery, Isaac Hammond, and Paul Turner frowned as they stared at the message they were given. The funeral had just ended, with the mourners standing around the Rosevale Memorial Gardens, talking about Taybor and how and why he didn’t deserve to die. The Parks family (which consisted of Samuel, Diana, Xavier, Valerie, and Casey) were speaking to the mourners and ignoring the rainy weather that fell upon the city of Sandy Springs, Oregon.

“I wonder if this is a joke,” said Michael as the others stared at the note. “Taybor’s dead. The police found his body at the Crystal Hall Manor a few days ago.”

“But how do they know the body is actually Taybor’s?” said Isaac.

“Fake, or different person,” said Paul.

“Exactly,” said Sadie. “Don’t forget, we’ve heard the story about Teddy Palmer and how he disappeared around the same time Taybor did.”

“I’ve noticed,” said Michael. “Nobody could have known about Teddy, not unless…”

He grabbed the note again, saying, “Maybe this note is true. Maybe Taybor’s still alive and they buried the wrong boy.”

“I hope you’re right,” said Isaac.

“But we won’t know that for sure until we go to the theater on Tuesday,” said Sadie.

“I’m not sure that’s going to happen,” said Paul. “Mayor put up curfew. We kids not allowed to go anywhere without adults.”

“Oh, so *NOW* they want to play it safe after the crap they went through with trying to get us to put down our phones and tablets and get off the computers and go outside,” said Isaac. “That’s not happening!”

“Not unless Team Sescape investigates this mystery letter,” said Sadie.

To make this long story short, Team Sescape stood in front of the Eminence Theatre the following Tuesday at 8PM. It was a slow day, with only a few people coming to the theater to watch movies. Just then, a boy wearing a blue and green plaid coat came out of a dark car that pulled in front of the theater. He saw the kids and said to them, “I was beginning to think you didn’t get my message. Did you miss me?”

“Taybor?” Michael, Sadie, Isaac, and Paul cried out.
