1. Prologue

I wasn't very old at the time. I was only three. But that was the night it all changed.

It was past midnight and I had woken up from a noise. I got out of bed and went to the door. I was about to open it when I heard someone coming.
I ran back to my bed and got in quietly. After all, I thought, if it's either of my parents, I'll just get into trouble for being awake. So I pretended to be asleep. I even breathed the way people do while they're sleeping.
I don't know where I learned all this stuff. I just kind of knew it already.
I heard the door open and someone entered the room. I realized right away it wasn't either of my parents. It was a complete stranger. My parents didn't walk the way the stranger was. I could tell by the sound of the stranger's feet on the floor.
I heard the stranger getting closer to me, and I wanted to tense up and hold my breath. Then the stranger was boy my bed. He started shaking me to wake me up, so I opened my eyes. I was really confused as to why this stranger was in my room at all.
The stranger was tall and pretty muscular. He had dark brown hair and brown eyes.
From outside the door someone shouted, "Thalx, are you coming?"
The stranger, apparently Thalx, answered, "I'm taking the boy with us." His eyes didn't leave mine. There was silence for a bit, then Thalx addressed me.
"You can come easily, or you can in a more difficult manner." I looked into Thalx's face, then decided I might as well go easily.
I nodded once. "I'll come easily, but you have to answer my question first."
"Seems only fair." He said.
I took a deep breath. "Where are my parents?"
Thalx looked down at me. "They're gone."
There was silence while I digested this information. I wondered whether I should ask my next question. I decided not to.
Thalx broke the silence. "What's your name, boy?"
I looked up at him and answered, "Leth." He nodded and filed away the information. Then he looked back at me.
"We should probably go now." He said, standing up and holding out his hand. I hesitated, then took it and stood myself. We left my room together and met Thalx's companion at the front door.
"What took so long?" Thalx's companion asked.
"Ralkm, this is Leth." Thalx answered, ignoring Ralkm's question. "Leth, this Ralkm."
I held out my little hand and smiled at Ralkm. Ralkm looked down at me and couldn't help smiling. I have black hair and green eyes. Since I had relatively just woken up, my hair was all messed up. Actually, it was always like that, but even more so then. Ralkm took my hand and shook it.
"Well, let's go then." Ralkm said.
We went outside to meet the two horses that were waiting for us. I went on one of the horses with Thalx. Ralkm got on the other. We rode in silence for awhile, but I finally broke the silence.
"Where are we going?" I asked. Thalx looked back at me.
"We're leaving Tonek." He said.
"Then where are we going?" I asked again. Thalx smiled and looked forward.
