Broken Hearts Reveal Demons

Katelyn had messed up, and she knew it. The one thing she wanted to know was how to fix it. Her world was crumbling around her, and the one she needed with her most was unreachable, all because of her. She felt like crying, but she couldn't. Firefist's don't cry. The only thing she could do was try and fix the problem she had started, for if she failed, the love of her life could kill others, or himself, and she could never live with herself if she let that happen. Not on her watch.

7. Long Lost, Just Found

Travis sat up and rubbed his head. His temples were pounding, as if he had just been struck with a rock to the head. He looked down and saw his father's sword embedded in his skin, through his stomach. Ouch.

Dante came running over, with a panicked expression. He nearly fell over with relief when he saw that Travis was awake. Quickly, he pulled the sword out of him and dropped it to his side, then fell to his knees and hugged him tightly.

"Travis! You're back!" he exclaimed with excitement in his tone. He lifted his head and pulled out of the hug with glassy eyes. Travis was extremely confused. He had no memory of being gone, ever.

"What-what do you mean... I'm back...?" he asked, propping himself up with his arms behind him. Dante sighed, then sat down in front of him with his legs crossed.

"It's a long story."

In around fifteen minutes, Dante managed to explain that Travis had turned into his demon form out of heartbreak when Gene lied to him about dating Katelyn, how he had vanished into thin air, how he and Katelyn had gone looking for him, and how his dad had stabbed him. Travis nodded along, still confused and with questions, but decided they could be answered later. He had one urgent thing he needed to find out as soon as he could.

"Where's Katelyn?" he asked, looking Dante in the eye as he stood up. Dante stood as well and went silent, glancing down at his side. Travis read his expression, and from what he could tell, he didn't want to know what happened to her. But his heart was telling him he needed to know if she was okay, so he slowly looked down to the side as well. What he saw made his heart sink.

He saw Katelyn's body laying on the ground, motionless. Her hair was strewn around the ground, and her skin was paler than it ever had been. Her eyes were closed and her mouth was agape, and as her chest was not rising or lowering, they could tell she was not breathing.

Travis felt tears welling up. He had just been told he had almost died, only to find out that his one and only love was dead. He fell to his knees next to her and cried, holding her hand tightly in his own. Her skin was cold, and her hand was limp. Dante stepped backwards with his head bowed sadly, and then he glitched himself away to leave his friend to let his emotions out.

The truth was, Katelyn was not dead. Her existence was not gone, simply moved. Her soul was wandering near the body of Travis's dad, whom Dante had managed to kill as he left. When his father was killed, Travis's mother and younger sister's soul had emerged, seeing as his father had imprisoned them within his own soul. When his soul had been released, so had his mother's and sisters.

Katelyn was talking with them softly. She found out that his mother's name was Xia, and his sister's name was Charlotte. His mother was a beautiful woman. Her hair was long, white, and neatly held back in a braid. Her eyes were a bright green, identical to Travis. Her skin was tan, and seemed to glow with joy after she had been released. Charlotte had the same white hair her mother had, but her hair was in pigtails from the sides of her head. She was always holding onto her mother somehow, either by the hand, edge of her skirt, or hiding behind her legs. Her eyes were a deep brown, like rocks against the sea. Her skin was lighter than her mother's, yet still tan. She had a cloud of freckles across her nose and cheeks, and her smile could light up any rainy day.

Travis's mother and sister had asked her about their son and brother, and Katelyn told them the story of what he had been up to when they were gone. They laughed when she told them he flirted with her, and their laughter made her feel their joy down to her shattered soul. They asked if they could go back to him, and Katelyn agreed. She wanted to return to him as well, to fix what she had done. She was wondering how they would get back into the overworld, but her questions were answered when Dante appeared in front of them.

Dante knew Katelyn was not actually dead, for Nicole had told him about the time Katelyn had saved her life and what happens to those in the Jury of Nine. They have the ability to live again.

Dante extended his hands to the ladies, who all gratefully took his hands. He took them back into the overworld and left them in his backyard as he went back to get Travis from the demon realm.

Travis hadn't known of the Jury of Nine's lives, and had been crying over Katelyn's body until he ran out of tears to shed. He felt as if his heart could never be repaired, because his crush, the love of his life, his only source of joy and light in the dark world he was in, was dead.

He was so upset, he hadn't noticed Dante appear next to him and put a hand on his shoulder. He only noticed when his name was called by his best friend.

"Travis, it's time to go. You have somebody-well, multiple somebodies-waiting for you back home," he said, trying to convince him to come with him. Travis looked up at him with damp cheeks and a crushed expression, but nodded. He gently kissed Katelyn's cheek, telling himself he would go back home and wake up from this nightmare, and she would still be alive. Dante took hold of his arm and took him back to the overworld.

When Travis opened his eyes, he was out of his demon form, as was Dante. He was back home, in the backward of his house. He rubbed his eyes and wiped his tears, wondering how he would get through each day without his light there to comfort him. But as he took his hands away and looked up, his answer was standing in front of him.

There he saw not only Katelyn, but his mother and sister as well, all smiling at him with such joy.
