“So, you’ve been over the river today then?

“Yes, I thought that it would be better than sitting in here all day said Peter as he opened a small tin of baked beans and placed them in a pan over the gas.

“Dinner won’t be long. There’s some tea in the pot if you’d like a cup.

“Yes, that would be nice.’

“Have you had a nice day?

“Well, we lost three patients on Christmas day which was sad. I met the families this morning and arranged for the deceased to be taken to the chapel of rest.

Peter shook the chips so that they would be golden brown all over then poured out a cup of tea. He put some milk and sugar in the cup and stirred it before giving it to Janet.

“Can we talk later?’

“Yes, once I get Deborah Jane in the bath.’

I put her in the bath this morning, I thought it would save you doing it tonight.

She had a good old play with her rubber ducks.

“Thanks, I just want to relax, it’s been pretty hectic today with their only being four staff on duty. What is it you want to talk about?

Deborah Jane, but let’s wait until we get her into bed first.’

Peter served up the food then called Deborah Jane to the table.

She came running in then sat down on the chair and picked up a fork and began to use the fork to stab a chip

“Use your knife Deborah Jane, please cut up the chips.’

But mummy they are easier to eat if you keep them on the fork.’

“Don’t argue, just do as I tell you.’

“Would you like some sauce on those chips asked Peter.

“Yes, please daddy.’

Peter came over to where she was sitting and shook some sauce over her chips.

“There you are they will taste nicer now.’

Those patties are nice.’

“There’s another two if you would like some more.’

“I couldn’t eat two but I’ll have another one, thank you.’

Peter drank a mouthful of tea and then got up and placed another one of the patties onto Janet’s plate.

Peter ate both of his but left some of his chips on the plate. He went to the back door for a cigarette.

“When he returned, Deborah Jane was telling her mother how daddy had sung the ugly duckling that morning and had made all the duck quacking sounds.

He cleaned his plate then set it down on the bench and ran the tap until the hot water came through and he poured a little washing up liquid into the sink then washed his plate and cup and saucer. When Deborah Jane had finished he did hers too then sat back and waited until Janet finished. I must have been hungry I’ve eaten it all. It is unlike me.

“See Deborah Jane I told you mummy would like them, didn’t I?

“Deborah Jane giggled then asked to leave the table. “Can I play in my room mummy?

“Yes, but only for a little while mind, because it will be time for bed soon.

Deborah Jane skipped off to her bedroom as Peter washed up then cleared everything away from the table and polished it.

“What was it you wanted to talk to me about?

Peter came and sat beside his wife on the sofa he turned towards her and said “Deborah Jane wants to see her real father.’

“When did this come about?

“This afternoon.’ she is curious Janet, she says she dreams about meeting her real father and what he may look like.

“Do you think I should tell him now after nearly five years, He raped me Peter, that was unforgivable.’

“If you keep her from meeting him she will only resent you for doing so when she grows up and when she does you may lose her. My advice would be to let her meet him at least then she can form her own opinion. She may not even like him but at least she will know that she has met him. The ball will then be in his court if he wants contact or not.’

“Do you think that I should leave my child with him?

“For Deborah Jane’s sake, yes I do.’

Janet thought for a moment then looked at Peter and asked if he would come with her.

“Do you want me to go with you?

“Okay I’ll go with you.’

“Alright then we can go on Wednesday, it’s my day off.’

“We will set off early so we can get back as I will have to get back to work on Thursday.’

“Do you want to drive down there in your car, it seems silly taking both cars?

“Do you mind if I drive down there, it will help me to concentrate on something other than him.’

“No, I understand. Are you going to tell Deborah Jane?’

Yes, I’ll go and tell her now.’

“I will need to ring Brian to make sure he’s in when we get there.’

Janet picked up the phone and dialled the number and waited for an answer. A woman answered and asked who was speaking.

“Would you tell Brian its Janet his ex-wife.’

There was a conversation going on between the woman and Brian and then the phone was passed over.

“Hello, Brian here.’

Janet remembered his voice, she was direct and told Brian that he had a child and that she wanted to meet her father.

There was a long silence before Brian answered.

“Why have you waited nearly five years to tell me that I have a daughter.’ If its money you’re after then forget it.’

“I don’t want your money, I never told you because you raped me remember?  I am only doing this for the child’s sake so she can see what type of man that you really are.’

Brian made no apologies for the rape, he just asked if the child had a name.

“She’s called Deborah Jane.

“When are you coming?

“I will be there on Wednesday.’

“What time are you coming?

“It will be early because I have get back, I have work.

“To where?  Where are you living these days?

“I don’t think that is any concern of yours do you.’

“It is if I want to see my daughter.’

“Look, we can discuss this on Wednesday, just be in when we get there.’

Janet hung up then went into Deborah Jane’s room to tell her that she was going to meet her real father.

“Deborah Jane was excited, Janet never said anything about her father, she only answered the questions Deborah Jane wanted to hear.

“When are we going Mummy?

“On Wednesday so you will have to get up very early because we have a long drive to Portsmouth. Now put on your pyjamas and get into bed. You will have to get used to going to sleep early so that you won’t be tired on Wednesday.

“That’s only one day, away isn’t it?

“Yes, it is.’

Deborah Jane slipped into her pyjamas then got into bed.

“Can I read my book for a little while, I’m not tired.’

“Just for a half an hour mind you.’

“Alright mummy, I promise to go to sleep in half an hour.

“That’s a good girl.’ I’ll come in and tuck you in later. Good night.’

Janet closed the door leaving her light on then went into the living room and sat down on the sofa.

“Are you okay asked Peter?

“Not really, I am not looking forward to this Peter.’

“Don’t worry, you will be fine and I will be with you.’

“You know there was no guilt in Brian’s voice at all, it was as if he’d forgotten what he did to me.’
