5. Long Time No See

“How have you been, Nysa?” Lucy asked, cracking open the bottle of wine. I thought for a moment of how i should answer.

“It’s been... bearable. I earn just enough money to keep me and Seth afloat, my job isn’t very safe right now and well... this apartment isn’t the nicest place to call home,” i said sadly, “But it could be worse right?” i laughed, in order to lighten the mood. There was an awkward moment of silence which i just couldn’t bear anymore, so i decided to change the subject rather quickly. “So, where have you been these past couple of years, Lucy?” i asked, quite eager to know all of the details. Lucy thought for a moment as if wondering whether to tell us or not.

“I go to Christford University,” Lucy beamed. “I’ve been training to become a psychologist for the past three years. I don’t have a house because i live at the university for now,” Lucy explained proudly.

“Wow Lucy, I’m so happy for you!” i smiled, happy that she was now doing something with her life. Lucy was always the type of person who would prefer to throw her life away playing online games, going on social networks and watching movies over and over again. And there was one thing we all knew she was good at, and that was giving people advice and putting herself in other people’s positions to understand how they would feel; so being a psychologist was the right path for her to go down.

“What about you, Raven?” Lucy asked, staring at her intently before taking a large gulp of wine. Raven froze on the spot and she looked as if she were having a panic attack inside; but she regained her focus and finally spoke.

“My parents haven’t long split up,” she began, tension building in the room with every word she spoke.

“I didn’t have anyone to turn to for support, so i ended up hanging around pubs and gambling my life away. But then i met someone, who gave me a reason to live so I’ve been trying to repair my broken life. I’ve got a stable job at the corner shop near my flat. It’s not a bad pay,” Raven finished on a lighter note. As if my natural instinct, i reached over and pulled Raven into a heart warming hug. Raven squirmed and fidgeted under my arms before eventually pulling away from me quite forcefully.

“I think I’m going to go home now,” Raven said suddenly and stood up from the bed. There was a moment of silence before anyone did anything and before i replied.

“I’ll walk you home. It’s only down the road and it’s the least i can do. You don’t mind if i leave you here for a minute, do you Lucy?” i made sure i didn’t give Raven the opportunity to reject my company.

“No, not at all!” Lucy giggled for no reason at all. The drink was clearly getting to her head.
