F ebr U ary - Valentines Day competition

My name is Eron, pronounced, "Air-on". It's really Eros, but I gotta keep cover, people study about me. Most people would know me as Cupid and well, that is true. Every February - gross - I find 5 people their true loves. IF I don't find their true loves, my grandfather, Zeus, punishes me by taking away my wings and bow for the rest of my life. Do I get anything good out of it? Nope, just me doing a favor for everyone else.

(Valentines day competition entry! This is the writing part :)

13. Chapter 11: Two true loves, and a half.

The next day, Artina dragged me down to the girl’s swim practice. To my surprise, Priya was actually acting as a manager for the boy’s swim team. She was wearing a red one-piece swimsuit and had her hair up in a little ginger bun. She was something else.

“Oh – Priya’s here again.” Artina sighed, applying her swim cap to her head.

“Why sigh?” I asked her, crossing my arms and arching my brow.

“Nothing – Just don’t want you to get too side-tracked.” She claimed, flipping her nonexistent hair.

I shrugged and followed behind her. One by one, girls were diving in and racing down the pool. Artina stopped for a quick second to cheer on her teammates. My eyes were obviously on Priya. Thank the Lord AJ wasn’t around. If he was, I would have been clawing his eyes out. Within a couple minutes or so, Artina led me to the bleachers.

“So... Where’s Penelope?” I asked her, crossing my arms and leaning against the wall. She looked up at me and nodded.

“Right – she’s over there –“Artina’s finger pointed in the direction of the floaty rack. A red-headed small-looking girl was stacking the floaties up.

“Wow, she’s really – “ Artina interrupted me.

“Small? Baby-looking? Ginger?”

“I was going to say cute, but okay then.”

Before I could talk to Artina again, she dove into the pool along with a bunch of other girls. She was really competitive. As I walked over to Penelope, someone else stopped me. It was Priya.

“Oh – hey Eron!” She greeted, causing me to lose all oxygen.

“Hey, Priya.” I awkwardly greeted back.

“What are you doing at a swim practice? You don’t swim.”

“Well, you know. Here for Artina!” I lied, scratching the back of my head. She tilted her head in confusion.

“Wait – you two...?” She questioned, causing me to glance over at Artina and scratching the back of my head. A red blotch spread across my face.

“Uh, yea.” I lied. What the hell did I do that for? Artina was still swimming and didn’t seem to notice Priya and I talking.

“Oh wow, that’s convenient.” He replied with a smile. I returned the smile but with widened eyes. When I was around this beautiful ginger girl, I didn’t know how to act.

“Yep – “She interrupted me like she always does. The corners of her mouth formed into a U-shape.

“Well, you guys are cute, and I hope it goes well for you.” Before she could walk away, I started to speak again. Water was splashing all around us.

“What about you and her brother – AJ...?” I asked, licking my lips a little. There were slightly salty, but I was still concerned if the girl I like was dating him.

“Oh, AJ.” She started, resting her hands on her curvy hips, “Him and I aren’t a thing. I like someone else you know? He just keeps trying to talk to me.”

I sighed with relief. She just nodded her head. Knowing that she and AJ aren’t a ting made my day 100% better. Suddenly, her head jerks up and she pointed her finger in the air as if she was remembering something. She picked up a bag that was beside her and pulled out a little light pink heart-shaped card.

“Here Eron,” She said, handing me the card. “I made some for a couple friends and I thought hey – why not get Eron a Valentine?”

I took the thing from her hand. It was soft like fabric silk. I opened the heart and there were little white drawn words that said, “You’re Beautiful <3 “

“Oh...wow I’m beautiful...” I said trying not to sound sarcastic. She called me beautiful and I guess that’s a compliment?

“Well, I didn’t know what else to say! We only ever talk in Bio, so I just put what came mind first.”

I lightly tapped her shoulder in a pretend punch with a smile. She bit her bottom lip and chuckled while holding her hand out.

“If you don’t like it, I’ll take it back!” She joked. I jerked the Valentine back past my head.

“I don’t think I’ll take an opportunity like that quite yet.”

We both laughed and eventually I thanked her for the card and told her it was, “Cute.” She nodded and walked away. That whole conversation felt like two seconds. Before I could go and bother her again, I spotted Penelope once again and made my way over to her. When I got there, she was still stacking up floaties from before.

“Need help?” I asked, picking up a couple of floaties from behind her. She whipped her fiery red hair back at me and gave me a slight smile.

“Thanks.” She replied, continuing to stack things up. I started with the questions as subtle as I could.

“So, what’s your name?” I asked although I already knew the answer. She pursed her lips and grinned at me.

“I’m Penelope, but my friends call me Pen.” She replied, holding out her hand. I shook it and introduced myself.

“I’m Eron, and my friends call me Eron.” I greeted sarcastically. She laughed and eventually piled up the last few floaties on the rack.

“So Eron, what can I help you with today?” She pulled out a clipboard and pen.

“Oh – nothing really. I just wanted to talk you know?” I said, raising my shoulders and eyebrows. Penelope must have thought I was flirting because her face turned into a sudden frown.

“Not interested.” She shot back. Why does every girl think I’m trying to flirt with them as soon as I want to talk to them?

“Not for me Pen, for a friend. He wants to know what wins your heart.”

It was a long 2-minutes of waiting for her answer. She sat down and looked up at the ceiling. There was little dew drops sticking to the top and every once in a while they would drip down.

“I like a guy who’s kind – but bad. A boy who is willing to do things with me – but respect my boundaries.” She said, looking back down at me.

“That’s all?”

“Pretty much.”

“Wow, then this shouldn’t be hard for him at all,” I state, stoking my invisible beard hairs. I got up and started to walk away, avoiding the slippery ground.

“Wait!” She shouted after me. I turned around and put my hands on my hips.

“Who is the guy?”

“Pfft. I’m not telling you.”

She kept asking who her secret admirer was, but I just kept denying and walking away. Eventually, I made it out of there just in time to catch Harry surprisingly in the library with a familiar book.

“Harry – is that my book?” I asked, snatching a book titled, “When Like Sucks” out of his hand. He laughed while looking pissed off.

“Actually yea. I snatched it from your bag while you weren’t looking. Where did you get that?” He asked with amusement. I rolled my eyes,

“It’s not important – what’s important is that I found you the answer to your love life.”

Harry’s body jerked up in his chair and his eyes widened. He just went from being complete, “Normal Harry” to, “Now I’m suddenly intrigued” Harry.

“Well spit it out already.” He demanded. I obeyed without any other questioning.

“She says just be yourself and be nice. Simple like that.”

Harry fell back into his chair. His hand shuffled to the front of his hair, to the back. He dropped his head back and opened his mouth and groaned.

“Are you fucking kidding me? That’s all she wants?”

“Yep,” I said, leaning up against a stable bookshelf.

“Well, what the fuck, I gotta go to her!”

“Harry – umm –“He cut me off by running out the door.

I eventually chase after him and find him face to face with Penelope in a crowd of people. Oh god, what is he doing? You can’t just attack a girl with your feelings like that! They freak out! I saw Priya peering over the crowd in her lifeguard chair to watch all the commotion. Harry grabbed Penelope’s wrists and yanked her away to under the bleachers. I could hear her yelling,

“Stop that!”

When the crowd was cleared, I followed them and hid. Harry was trying to make out with Penelope and she was trying to break free. He was practically raping her. How on earth did my advice make him think this? This is not the answer!

“Penelope, I am in love with you. Whether you want it, or not.” He said, trying to force his lips to hers.

“Get away from me creep!” She kicked his shin and managed to escape. I couldn’t let her escape, I had to help him. My body lurched out of nowhere and grabbed her and turned her towards Harry.

“YOU!” she hissed, punching my arm. I held my hands up in surrender.

“Look – I’m not assisting his stupid plan. I’m here to help you. All you need to do is look at him.”

Harry looked a bit confused as she turned and stared at him with a long sigh. I pulled out my bow and golden arrow. My fingers pulled back the string and let go. The arrow caused Harry’s eyes to widen in shock. He looked betrayed.

“You just shot her ass you ass hole!” He shouted, attempting to pull the bow out. I slapped his hand from continuing the process. My watch beeped with another successful love story.

“You don’t want to pull it out for another two minutes or so if you want her to fall in love with you.” My hand was still shielding him from pulling the golden arrow. He gave me a look. The look of realization. Harry let his hand drop Back to his side and furrowed his brows at me.

“Oh my fucking god you’re –“I finished his sentence.

“Cupid, I know.”

“Why the hell did you not tell me before? That would have been so much easier.”

“Because I can’t just go and tell everyone everything.”

“Still – “He was cut off by Penelope’s soft lips brushing his lips. He was caught off guard but clearly was enjoying it.

“You have to promise not to tell anyone.” I requested, attempting to pull them apart with words.

“Tell people what?” Penelope asked curiously. Harry shook his head.

“Nothing – Eron, I won’t tell,” Harry said, nodding.

“Promise?” I asked, holding out my hand. He shook it and spoke,

As to this day, I had two true loves and a half. AJ and Daphne have an odd relationship that I created for them He visits her in jail almost every day. She doesn’t like him though – but it’s the power of the red arrow. Then we have Pandora, who just loves herself. She’s always looking at her reflection and kissing it. Finally, I have Harry and Penelope. Harry didn’t need a shot because it was clear that his love for her was in existence. Penelope, on the other hand, fell for it. I just need two more love stories.

As I sit down in English class behind the girl who looks like a snake, I pulled out my pen and pencil and started to write something I hoped to give Priya the day in the cave. This poem practically explained my month.

Roses are red,

Cupid is me,

I’m in love with you,

But I can’t, see,

It’s weird I know, but I have arrows too.

I shot Pandora

She loved herself

I shot Penelope,

She fell off the shelf

AJ was a dick,

But he liked Daphne

I was going to shoot you,

But then you’d like Henry.

Artina and Henry

Forever happy

You and I well – we’re a bit sappy.

This month I dread because of one clue,

I can’t love,

So, February,

Fuck you.
