11. Ch 2: Uncrowned Queen (Part 4 of 6)

Sarashi barely managed to lift the spear between her and the large shape of yellow fur and claws, suddenly on top of her, knocking her to the ground. White fangs snapped only a breath away from her face as spittle rained down on her. Hissing with fear, she tried to kick the creature away, recognizing it somewhere in her frantic mind as a lion. A lioness. The kick did not even seem to register in the beast's mind as it growled, digging the claws on its hind paws into her thighs. It tried to reach her shoulders with its front paws, and her throat with its gaping jaws.

Sarashi screamed, kicking, trying to get her legs away from the claws and still failing. Desperately and without thought, she tried to use the spear to push the lion off, and it almost worked, but then it came down on her again. A front paw got around the spear, and tore her left shoulder, and her scream grew in volume from the pain.

I'm going to die.

Managing to bend one leg and place a foot against a stone, she used all her strength to push the spear away. She lifted the clawing, tearing, terrifying beast on top of her, and cast it off. Blood ran hot down her legs and arm from her wounds, as she used the muscles beneath them. Pain flared everywhere as she rolled to her feet, keeping the spear between her and her attacker.

The lion was only floored for a second, before it sprang again.

This time, she was prepared and kept her footing despite its massive weight, managing to catch the predator's paws with her spear.

Both standing on two legs, eyes level, the lion tried to push her into the ground. Her heart beat like never before as it stretched its neck over the spear to reach her face with its teeth. Pain made her dizzy as she growled back, a fiery rage starting to burn in the pit of her stomach.

She, the last of the Enshiras, would not die here. She would not die, not without killing Tiburon Namur. Not without avenging her family.

She would not be killed here.

The lioness threw itself away, Sarashi stepped backwards, and it began to circle her as it would wounded prey. She mirrored its steps despite her pain, baring white teeth in stark contrast to her dark lips.

“Come on!” she yelled at the lioness, her voice raw, as it roared in response.

Leaping once, bounding off the ground, the beast came at her. Kneeling, she turned her spear from shield to stake, and buried the blunt end in the ground and the tip in the lion's chest. The force of the cat's own jump drove it all the way through, and out the back, allowing the beast to slide close enough to dig its claws deep into Sarashi's shoulders. She screamed, closing her eyes, fighting to hold onto the spear and not letting the lion move for fear it might catch hold of something more vulnerable. Tears rolled down her dust covered cheeks.

For minutes that seemed like hours, they were caught in a deadly embrace, before the yowling, scratching lioness fell silent and limp. The moment it did, Sarashi lost her grip on the spear, the carcass and stake slipping from her and falling to the ground. The claws made new lacerations as they were torn from her flesh.

Heaving with shock and fear, Sarashi fell too. Suddenly she shook all over, her entire body pounding heavily, as pain rolled through her. Dizziness raked her, and she barely managed to turn her head before she threw up beside the dead lion, unable to move away. Her fingertips grew numb with blood loss, but she barely felt it till she tried to rise, and fell down again.
