Calling Ben - Mystery

Eve White, and Ben James are very close friends. They tell each other everything – or so Eve had thought. On January 1st, 2018, Ben James goes missing exactly when the fireworks go off at 12:00am at a New Years Eve party. She finds no trace of him but his red letterman jacket. The day before, at Eve’s house, Ben had been acting strange. He's been saying good-bye, but he wasn’t going anywhere. He's the most popular boy in school. Caring. Kind. Heart-warming. Loyal. Eve isn’t so popular, but she isn’t a loser either. They both had always picked their friends wisely. When school starts up again, Eve is informed that Ben is missing. She tries to piece together his disappearance, but she can’t do it on her own. She calls in some extra teenage help.
The 6 teens go on an adventurous journey to solve a mystery of a lost boy, create never before known relationships, break barriers, and create friendships.

1. Chapter 1: New years

DECEMBER 30TH, 2017:

Christmas break had been great so far. I have a party to attend tomorrow. Plus, my mom gave me loads of presents. It’s a snowy day in Denver Colorado, and the air is cold. I'm walking my gigantic black German Shepard named Ana around the block of my neighbourhood.

My long wavy black hair blowing in the wind, and my mocha coloured face getting frostbite. It feels like the sort of day you would find in a Hollywood movie or best-selling novel. My brain functions differently, so I’m over-dramatic in my mind.

My name is Eve White. I’m a 17-year old senior at DHS. Something else you should know about me is, I am

A.) half-Asian and half-Hispanic,

B.) Totally and probably forever single

C.) Picky about people I’m friends with

I choose my friends wisely. I’m not a mean person or anything, it’s just that sometimes its best to wait and be wise. If you jump to conclusions, you never know what you’re going to get. I’ve made that mistake once before, and trust me, I don’t plan on making it again.

Freshman year I was new at school. I'd had no friends, and had just moved from Kansas. My first thought had been, let's go ahead and be friends with whoever talks to you first. A tall girl walked over to me. She was wearing a black choker, a band t-shirt, and black skinny jeans with 6-inch black heels. I wasn’t so sure how I felt about her, and honestly, I'd been desperate. She'd asked if I wanted to be friends, I'd said,“Yea sure! I’m new and thanks.” like an idiot.

For the next month we were close until something weird happened. She had a sleepover with a friend I had made, and she told me the girl cut her wrist for her. She didn’t ask for it, she wasn’t depressed, but the girl just simply had decided to cut another girl's wrist. I quickly strayed from her and made friends with other people. Well, I got to know them first.

My phone vibrates, and I pull it out of my pocket, still walking Ana. It was a text from Ruth Hall, a friend I had made freshman year and kept till senior.

Ruth: U better go 2 the party 2morrow!

I stop by a nearby coffee shop. My mouth is craving caffeine as I'm tying Ana’s leash around a pole. I pet her head and give her a warm smile before I walk into the shop. The air fills with coffee beans of different types. I stand in the back corner and wait in line.

Me: You* to* and tomorrow*

Ruth: o pff b quiet.

Me: Whatever.

Ruth: so, r u?

Me: I’ll answer if you use correct grammar for once

Ruth: So, will you, Eve White, be attending the New Year’s Eve party tomorrow?

Me: Indeed, and thank you for using correct grammar.

Gosh, I love Ruth so much. She's like the shell to my nut. I know that sounds weird, but it’s true. My body slowly gravitates with the line towards the cash register. Who knew a coffee shop could be so busy, I mean it’s Denver Colorado, there should be plenty other coffee shops people could go to.

“Hi how can I- “A medium-low voice paused, “help you?”

I look up from my phone and see a boy. Someone I recognized from school, but he was definitely younger. He had short curly dark-brown hair, lightly tanned skin, light blue eyes, and was about my height. I was 5’8 in height. He looked embarrassed to see me or something.

“Yea, Can I get a chai latte?” I asked him, adding in a slight smile.

“Yea, yea sure be right on it.”

He smiled back at me as he backed up accidentally bumping into his co-worker. She growled at him and he turned a bright red. This made me chuckle, he's a cute kid. When I say cute, I mean adorable.

Within 3-minutes or so, He comes back with my latte, and no uniform on. I watch as he walks out from behind the counter revealing his brown backpack, his fluffy winter coat, and my latte.

“Here.” He hands me my coffee and walks me to the door. What a gentleman.

“Why thank you, young sir.” I reply, taking a sip and feeling the hot sensation burning my tongue.

For some odd reason he's still walking with me, but considering he was probably a freshman, I'm being kind. He frowned a bit when I'd called him "young sir".

“I’m actually not that young. I’m a Junior.” He corrects me, sniffling a little due to the cold air.

As I untie Ana from the pole I ponder and realize he looks so young to be 16 or 17. I start to walk with Ana’s leash in my left hand.

“Well still young to me, I happen to be a Senior.”

“I know, I’ve seen you around at school. You’re Eve White right?”

It’s so cute that he knew my name. I grin at him, flashing my dimples.

“Yea, and you are?”

“Theodore, but you can call me Theo.”

I pause, and we shake hands. As long as I’ve been standing next to him, I notice he’s a bit taller than me by a couple inches, and he has a cute mole on the side of his neck and under his chin.

“Nice to meet you, Theo.”

“Yea, you too. Anyway, what are you doing on this cold Saturday?”

I don’t know what I'm doing. I do know I’m going to a party tomorrow, but today? So far I’m just walking my dog. Not a drag, because I love Ana!

“I don’t think I have plans. But I think I might apply for an evidence packager when I turn 18. You know, to help cops out and whatever”

“Oh, that’s so cool! You know, I actually help solve cases sometimes. I’m a scientist, top of the school.”

That’s where I recognized him from. I knew I had seen Theo around school, but now I know I saw him getting awarded during an assembly once.

“That’s neat. I really want to be a Federal Agent one day, I think evidence packaging could be a great starter job.”

I like Theo. He's calm and cool. Although he's a gigantic nerd. That doesn’t bother me. I’m probably nerdy myself. Theo checks his watch and bites his lip.

“I actually got to go – cute dog by the way!” He shouts as he runs in the opposite direction. I wave at him and keep walking.

I walk all the way to my house and find my good friend, Ben James, standing on my doorstep. He doesn't notice me and is about to knock on my front door.

He turns around and smiles at me. He's wearing just his red letterman jacket, as usual, no hat, no nothing. His big feet walk down the steps and stand in front of me. The air is so cold that his breath is coming out like smoke.

“Hey Eve.” He greets with a cheeky smile.

Ben James is popular – very popular. Why he even wants to be my friend is a mystery to me. I'm not popular. I'm not a geek either, though. I'm just someone in the world without a label. Ben is handsome to the max, too; his hair is naturally auburn brown. Ben's eyes are emerald green, and he has sandy-tan skin. Ben has the most perfect jawline and body. He's just Mr Perfect.

“What are ya doing here?” I ask, tilting my head back as I take a sip of my chai latte. He shoves his hands in his pockets and looks around.

“Just came to talk, you know?” He sounds nervous. Maybe he's just cold.

“Yea sure let's go inside though.”

I lead him inside of my house. He doesn’t come over all the time, but when he does, we just talk about the stupid drama that's bothering us at school. I let Ana off her leash and I take Ben upstairs to my grey bedroom.

“So, I wanted to just know something…” He starts, plopping himself stomach first onto the bed. I do the same, and our heads were both at the end of my bed while our feet rest under my pillows. Good thing my TV is literally at the end of the bed against the wall. I turned it on with the remote.

“Sure, what is it?”

As I flip through channels, he pauses as if he were thinking. He rolls over on his back so that he's facing the ceiling. I'm still on my stomach.

“Do you care about me?”

I scrunch my forehead and peer down at him. I'm practically hovering over him now. What kind of question is that? We’ve been friends for like ever, something is up.

“What kind of question is that?”

“It’s just….” His voice trails off and he pauses, “You know, I would miss you a lot if you left.”

“Umm…okay…” I chuckle a bit, why is he being so emotional? That’s funny, but he is in acting classes, most likely just acting.

“I’m serious Eve. What if I’m gone, what if you never see me again?”

I choke on my own spit.

“Ben,” I sit up and cross my legs, letting my knees touch his side while he’s lying down, “You know you’re one of my best friends. If you left, it would mean a huge deal to me – not only me! Literally, the entire school would care.”

“Yea but -” He sits up and faces me, “Eve, I have to tell you something.”

“You can tell me anything.”

He looks me in the eyes, then at my lips. He keeps repeating that action for more than 30 seconds. I don’t know what he wants to tell me, so I tilt my head in confusion. He leans in- WHAT? WHY IS HE LEANING IN? I lightly tap his shoulders away.

“I-I’m so sorry – I just –"

I cut him off with panic, why do I have to be so rude? “No! You’re fine! It’s just I wasn’t expecting that –“ God Eve, why do you have to be such an idiot?

“No, I should keep my boundaries, I don’t even know why I did that.” He said, standing now, scratching the back of his head.

“You also have a girlfriend Ben,” I add, standing up as well. We both are on opposite sides of the bed.

“I know…”

“So, you like me?” I question further.

“Of course! You don’t understand Eve it’s not what you – “I cut him off again by running to the bathroom.

I look in the mirror wide-eyed. Holy. Mother. Trucking. Lord. Ben James just tried to kiss me. He’s been my friend since freshman year, how can I let that happen when I don’t have feelings like that? Outside the bathroom door, I hear running.

My hand grasps the door handle and I run out of the bathroom. He's not upstairs, so I run downstairs, only to find no one. My last thought was the front door. A gust of wind blows in and Ana runs out to the front yard.

“Ben?!” I shout.

I watch his black sports car drive away.

The next morning, I wake up to Ana licking my face, which causes me to smile. She lies down next to me, rubbing her warmth against my arm. I pick up my phone from my nightstand and notice there are notifications from Ruth and Instagram.

Ruth: Girl, THE PRTY IS 2NITE!

           On Instagram, I have 951 followers, Ruth has 647, and Ben has 2,999. He's so close to 3,000. Speaking of Ben, I should check in on him and see if he’s okay. I know, I know, I screwed up! I should have just let him confess his dang hormonal teenage feelings.  My thumbs quickly type;

Me: Hey, are you okay?

Ben had tried to kiss me yesterday. Sure, I'd felt uncomfortable – but he'd seemed really sad. It’s not like he’s a bad person or anything. Plus, before I cut him off, he'd said, “it’s not what you…” and I can only assume after that was going to come, “Think.”

What's that supposed to mean? He doesn’t like me but had wanted to kiss me? That doesn’t add up. Is it just a boy thing? I don’t even want to think about it, instead, I want to scroll through my Instagram feed.

Everything's mainly the same as yesterday's feed. Just a bunch of celebrity photos and Ella Henderson’s modelling pictures. Gross. Ella is Ben's girlfriend. They're perfect for each other, and they're usually so kind. She's just as attractive as him. Ella has strawberry blonde long hair, British-like teeth, a curvy top lip, slim nose, light tan skin, and icy blue eyes.

They have been dating since the beginning of 6th grade is what I'd heard. I became friends with Ben freshman year after the incident with the girl who I falsely became friends with. Then Ruth came after. Speaking of Ruth, I should probably stop leaving her on read and text back.

Me: Yes, I’m aware.

           She texts back in milliseconds.

Me: Also a question, did Ben say he was going?

Ruth: Yea he told me he was going. Y?

Part of me wants to release all my stress on Ruth, the other half is begging me to keep quiet. I’m just not going to say anything until further notice.

Me: Just wondering.

If he is going to the party, then that'll give me a time to reason with him. He must have had some sort of good intention or something because Ben would never purposely cheat on Ella. Ben's a good guy. And I know people would try and tell me that people aren’t who you always think they are. Ben's different.

I hop out of bed and Ana follows me. It's currently 7:00 am, and I'd heard my dad in the kitchen stirring up some breakfast when I'd woken up. I can assume it’s my dad because my mom – well, she doesn’t cook. My mom is a federal agent. Meaning she's never home and she works for the government. My dad, on the other hand, is the principal at my school.

As I make my way downstairs, the smell of chocolate pancakes fills the air. The kitchen includes my dad, his spatula, and the pancakes. Of course, there are other things in there – my dad and his mad cooking skills just happen to be the most important.

“Chocolate pancakes? Classic.” I greet him, walking over to give him a tight hug. He kisses my forehead and wraps his non-occupied hand around my shoulders.

“Glad you like it, I added extra sugar, but don’t tell your mom – she’ll flip.” He lets go of me with a smile and continues to flip the little circles of joy.

My dad is usually laid back. My mom, on the other hand, is not. Speaking of which…I haven’t really asked either if I could go to the party. If I ask my dad he’ll say something like, “Go ask your mother.” And if I ask my mom, she’ll be like, “No.”

“So…there’s this party tonight,” I say, starting up a coffee pot.

“Is there?” He replies, not really paying attention to what I have to say. He's too focused on perfecting his pancake skills.

“Yea, it’s a New Year’s Eve party…”

“Okay…and?” He asks, scooping the pancakes onto a plate.

“I was wondering if I could go.”

Dad doesn’t look at me, I doubt he'd even heard me. He licks his fingers and places a plate right in front of me and one for him. Within a minute, he starts shoving the food into his mouth.

“Uh…hello?” I start again, snapping him out of his food addiction.

“What?” I groan and rest my head on my palm.

“The party dad.”

“Oh, right – party.” He finishes the bite of his pancake, and finally says what I thought he was going to say all along.

“Go ask your mom.”

“Dad, You can make choices too, you’re a parent!”

Before he could reason with me, my mom and younger brother Aiden walk in. Mom nods at me and dad, while Aiden plops his uninvited self-right next to me.

“Ooh chocolate chip pancakes, thanks dad.” He says as he grabs off of the serving plate.

Aiden is an 8th-grade boy. We aren’t close, but we aren’t mean to each other either. He's always a kiss-up to our parents, which makes them favourite him. Aiden looks like me, but a boy version. Which means he has short black hair, mocha coloured skin, brown eyes, and is about 5’7 in height.

My mom is who gave us our black hair. She has to-the-shoulder black hair, pale skin, brown eyes, and is about 5’4 in height. My dad, on the other hand, is who gave us everything else in appearance. He's got brown hair, green eyes is tall like me and my brother, and has mocha coloured skin.

“What were you two talking about before I walked in?” Mom asks, taking a sip of the coffee that I'd prepared earlier.

“Oh, Eve wants to go to a party tonight,” Dad replies while walking over to wash his dish.

My mother raises her dark eyebrows at me. Oh god. Dad if you just had said yes, I could go before she walked in, that would have saved us a lecture.

“A party? Is that so?” She questions, looking me in the eye. I take a bite out of my pancake to avoid the question.

“Oh, that New Year’s Eve party? Yea I wasn’t invited.” Aiden complains, trying to join in on the conversation.

“Maybe because it’s a high school party Aiden,” I say, raising my eyebrow at him.

“Well, how come Ethan Marble was invited and not me?” He asks, trying to make a point.

“Ethan’s older brother probably got him in –“I'm cut off by mom, adding in her little mom sayings.

“Well I’ll let you go on one condition,” She says surprisingly. I'd never thought my mom would actually consider letting me go to a party. The only party she'd ever let me attend had been a birthday party at Ruth’s house.

“What’s the condition?” I ask chirpily.

“You take your brother.”

Aiden almost chokes on his food the same time as me. We're all in our pyjamas and having a conversation about a party that starts at 6:30 pm. The only way I can go is if I took Aiden?

“Wait – seriously?” Aiden and I ask at the same time. We look at each other in shock. Our Mother, Raina White, is going to let us go to a party full of crazy teenagers, probably drugs, maybe even alcohol.

“Fine. I’ll take him.” I say reluctantly as Aiden celebrates to himself.

I pull out my phone and text Ruth the kind-of-exciting news.

Me: I get to go to the party!

           She quickly replies,

Me: But there’s a catch.

Ruth: Better not b anything crazy

Me: I have to bring Aiden.

Ruth: Wait wut?

December 31st, 6:30

It's 6:30 p.m. sharp and I am already ready for the party. It's a little upsetting that Aiden just had to bring up the fact that Ethan Marble had been invited. Truth is, Ethan isn’t actually invited, he’s just…well-known around high school because of his brother Jack.

Aiden and I stand on the front porch steps waiting for our ride, aka, my best friend Ruth. I look over at Aiden. His hair is still a little messy, but his outfit choice is alright for an 8th grader. He had simply slapped on some tan skinny pants and a dark blue ski vest, with a black long sleeve underneath. Wow, brother's got some game.

I watch as he constantly tries to fix up a single bump of hair on his head using his cell phone camera. Poor him, not knowing that patting it down won’t work.

“Here, let me help,” I say, pulling out my backup hair gel out of my Coach purse. He sighs and shoves his phone into his pocket and looks up at the night sky. It usually gets dark around 4:30 p.m. in Denver, Colorado.

I apply a squirt of gel in my hand and aggressively rub my hands together to mix the product, so it will stick his hair together and stay in place. My hand runs through the front of his hair, and then through the sides. When I finish, he pulls out his phone to use as a mirror and looks at himself.

“Hey, thanks,” he says, a slight smile curve coming from the side of his mouth.

“No problem, I just don’t want you looking like a goofball in front of a bunch of high school girls now, do I?” I tease, pushing his head away, but careful not to mess up his hair.

“Guess not.” He replies. I look over at his phone and see that he's checking his Instagram feed now.

Aiden and I haven’t always been so close, but that’s the reason we don’t fight. If we were close, we would spend so much time together, and it would make us most likely annoyed with each other. Something about tonight, makes me feel like we are a bit closer.

Five minutes later, Ruth pulls up in her beat-up brown Jeep. A smile creeps across my face as Aiden and I run to the car. He slips into the back, and I comfortably plop myself in the front.

“Ruth?” Aiden asks. We both turn around to look at him. His feet are in the air, and he's trying to not step on her belongings.

“Yes, Aiden?” She replies, completely oblivious to the fact that he has nowhere to put his feet.

“Where do I put my feet?” He grits his teeth together and smiles a nervous smile. I start to laugh because this is the second time Aiden has been in Ruth’s car. His last issue with the ride had been her car's smell.

“Just step on it, you’ll be alright.”

Aiden awkwardly nods and props his feet on a cage with an unknown creature in it. It's dark in the car, so I couldn’t really make out what's in the cage. It's so abnormally big, that Aiden’s knees are pressed against his chest. He mouths, “help me” as she starts to drive.

“Anyway, damn Eve! You’re looking good as hell!” She exclaims, zigzagging on the road.

“Th-thanks, but keep your eyes on the road.” I lecture, buckling my seat belt.

Now that I think about it, maybe I do look good. It had taken a lot of effort and time to perfect my eye makeup, and shop for a New Year’s worthy outfit. My black hair is formed in big, bouncy curls and my eyebrows are perfectly done. I have on red and gold glittery eyeshadow on that I had learned to do from watching a makeup tutorial, along with nude lipstick. Finally, my outfit is on point. My long-sleeved golden dress hugs my body comfortably and the red accents throughout compliment the red in my makeup.

Ruth’s outfit is cute. She wears a dress like mine, but it's green, which compliments her hair colour. She's wearing pretty natural makeup, nothing too serious, and her hair is pulled in a low side bun. We all look great and I have a feeling that tonight is going to be a blast.

“Ruth, you look so cute!” I exclaim, blowing her an air kiss. She pretends to catch it and put it to her heart with a smile while still zigzagging on the road.

“Thank you!”

“Oh, right.”

As we arrive at the office building the party is being hosted in, snow starts to fall around us. Aiden runs into the building as fast as he can. I assume he does this because his hair might get ruined if he's in the wetness for too long. Ruth and I follow behind.

As soon as we open the door, a lady greets us, “Hi, happy New Year’s!” She hands us a complimentary planner.

“Thank you,” I replied, looking around for the party.

“The party is on the 26th floor, hope you enjoy yourselves.” The lady says, pushing the elevator button open for us.

“Oh, we will, lady!” Ruth shouts as she steps into the elevator.

Before the elevator shuts, Aiden asks the lady, “Why don’t you come party with us?”

The lady looks at Aiden like he's crazy. She starts to chuckle and then blushes. What a sweet woman.

“If only dear, if only,” she says sarcastically.

The sound of the party slowly gets louder as we rise up. Suddenly, the number turns to, “26” and the elevator stops, opening the door. We walk out to a crowd full of crazy teenagers dancing around everywhere.

Ruth screams, “YEA!” as she exits the elevator and starts fist bumping to the music.

Aiden and I awkwardly make our way to the food table. It's just kind of a thing we do at any event. Arrive, and eat the food first. The table is filled with goodies like chocolate covered pretzels, a chocolate fountain, marshmallows, chips, and a bunch of other delicious snacks.

“Wow, I’m dying of joy right now,” I say, shoving a chocolate pretzel in my mouth.

“Who wouldn’t? This is pure heaven right now!” He exclaims, reaching for a piece of cake.

“So…are you happy I brought you?” I ask while slowing down my eating. My lips are salty, so I lick them clean.

Aiden finishes his chewing before he answers, “Aside from the car ride, I think it’s great for only being here for like five minutes.” We look at each other and laugh.

During our sibling bond, I notice that Aiden keeps looking behind me. His eyes bounce from my food, to behind me, and repeat. I finally turn around to see a beautiful young girl around his age talking with a group of people. I recognize her. It took me a couple seconds, but that was Riley Henderson. Ella Henderson’s younger sister.

“Riley Henderson huh?” I ask, raising my eyebrows at him.

“Good thing you fixed my hair.” He says. I give him a look, and his eyes widen.

“No – I – er – mean – oh god,” He pauses and looks up at my eyes, "Please help me."

It was obvious Aiden had a big crush on this girl. I bite the inside of my cheek and nod. I mean, the Henderson girls were nice, why not help him out. I grab his arm and drag him over there. His face was as red as a cherry tomato.

“Hey Ella, hey Riley.” I greet. Ella and Riley both smile.

“Hi! Wow you look great!” Riley says, looking me up and down.

“Oh my gosh, so perfect!” Ella adds.

“Thanks, you guys too!”

They really did look great. Riley was a short girl about 5’2 and had long strawberry blonde hair. She was wearing a loose flower girl dress that was green and had a sharp nose. Ella, on the other hand, was much more mature looking. She had on a short, short dark green fancy dress, with long curly blonde hair. Her makeup was exotic but beautiful. She was about my height and was just older looking.

“You look great too, Aiden,” Riley says, flashing us her dimples.

“Wow, uh thanks.”

My brother had no game. I had to teach him how to be successful with dating. The only way I could right now was to convince him to go and take her to dance. I clear my throat,

“So, Riley, I heard you made varsity on your dance squad.” I start. Aiden knows what I'm doing, and just acts interested.

“Oh, yea! I’m super pumped to be performing with the high schoolers.” She explaines.

“Well, you probably got some great moves…why don’t you show Aiden a couple?”

“Actually, that sounds great. Come on Aiden –“ She grabs his hand and yanks him out to go dance.

“Keep your phone on!” I shouted. Ella and I laugh.

“Let me guess, he’s got a crush on her?” She asks, sipping out of her drink.

“Oh, you have no idea.”

Nature was calling, so I excused my self from the conversation and went to the bathroom. This whole reason I came to this party, was because of Ben. I hate to admit it, but I wanted answers. Why was he saying goodbye when he wasn’t leaving? Maybe he was leaving! What if he was running away?

I ran out of the bathroom to try and find Ben. Luckily, I see him. Except, he’s yelling at a girl. To be specific, Alexis Lunch. She was Ella Henderson’s irrelevant enemy. People started to cover my view of Ella, Ben, and Alexis. What was going on? I try my best to get in the circle, but all I can hear is yelling and bangs.

Oh, my god. Ella, and Alexis in a fight? No way. My arm tries to get past people, but they’re partying so hard, they don’t notice me, or the situation of Ella, and Alexis. Ben’s voice was still yelling at Alexis. I’ve never heard Ben yell like that before. It’s almost like he’s a completely different person.

Suddenly, the crowd clears, and Alexis runs past me, Ben chasing after her. His auburn hair, blazing by. Ben’s arm pushed me out of the way, causing me to fall dramatically to the ground. Did he even notice me? Why did he just push me?

“Hey!” I shout furiously.

I just want to know what was up with Ben James lately. I turn and see Ella with tears streaming down her face. Her eye makeup, ruined. She disappears, with Riley running after her. Great, now I know she left Aiden somewhere.

Something just went down. I don’t know what, but I’m the only one who noticed this madness. The time on my phone reads 12:00 am. Everyone started to scream and jump. Fireworks went off. I don't care, I just need to find my brother, and go home.

I found Aiden with Ethan Marble and dragged him out of there. He looks confused, even more concerned. I ignore him and pull out my phone to text Ruth.

Me: Take us home. Something went down with Ben
