6. Moms Can Be Embarrasing

“Dante, sweetie, are you back?” he heard his mom call out from the back screen door. She opened the door and stepped outside, stopping once her eyes met each of his friend’s eyes.

“Uh, hey mom… there’s been a… situation…” Dante rubbed his neck while explaining nervously. While his mom was nice, she was also unpredictable.

“Mind explaining it, then?” she said with crossed arms. She didn’t look happy, but you could never tell with her. Dante gulped even more nervously.

“Uh, sure…” He turned to his friends while biting his lip. “Hey, do you guys mind waiting for us…?”

None of them could speak for a bit. Dante was in trouble and they all knew it. Then Katelyn spoke up, taking charge.

“Nope, not at all!” she said as she grabbed Nicole and Travis’s arms and pulled them away, to the wooden bench against the fence in his backyard that was several yards away. Dante waited until they were seated, then he turned back to his mother, whos stance did not change in the slightest.

“Sorry about this mom… I didn’t mean for them to come here! They just… fell in here by accident while I was trying to come back! Honest!” the nervous boy stumbled over his words, struggling to explain the situation while he looked down.

His mother’s hard gaze was focused on her son, trying to figure out if he was lying or not. Once she determined he was not, she dropped her arms and gently held his face with her hands, lifting it up to look at her.

“It’s alright my boy, as long as you tried… We’ll have to keep them safe until they can return.”

Dante was surprised by his mother’s calm tone and words. He had been surprised by so many things today and it wasn’t even lunchtime yet.

“You… mean it?” he asked hopefully.

“Yes I do. Now bring them back over and introduce me to them.”

Dante ran his fingers through his deep blue hair and went back over to his friends. After telling them what had happened, they stood up and followed him back to his mother.

“Mom, these are my friends, Katelyn, Travis, and Nicole,” he introduced her, and as he said each of his friend’s names, they nodded their head once.

“It’s a pleasure to meet the children that have kept my boy so interested in your world! He has told me many things about each of you!” his mother spoke cheerfully to the kids in front of her, her tone much different from the tone she was speaking with to Dante just moments before.

“Really? Like what?” Travis asked. He wasn’t going to tell Dante’s mom that he wasn’t from the overworld just yet.

“Oh, many things, many things… He plays video games with you all, has been introduced to many things you have in the overworld we don’t have here, and I believe he has a liking towards one of you…” she listed.

“Oooh! Which one?” Travis asked his mom as he lightly elbowed Dante in the ribs with a teasing smirk on his face.

“Mom!” Dante’s face became flushed with a fiery red as he swatted Travis’s arm away. His mom hid her laughter behind a smile.

“I won’t say, because he would get mad at me, but it shouldn’t take long to figure it out between the three of you!” she smiled more as she opened the door for them to come inside. Katelyn rolled her eyes at the boys and marched right into their house, followed by Nicole with a large smile on her face. Travis snickered lightheartedly and also entered the house, and he was followed by Dante, who was still red in the face. His mom chuckled, then went into the house with the kids and shut the door behind her.
