Escape the Demons

Dante has a different past than most, and it may come from his homeworld belonging to the demons.

3. Hang-Out Gone Wrong

Dante was in an alleyway in between two overturned garbage cans. He stepped out onto the concrete and looked out of the alley. What he saw was a few cars zooming down the road and a few houses on the street. The houses were larger than the average house and had large yards. His focus was on a certain one, a nice white house with a stone pathway from the driveway to the front door. It was where he was meeting with his friends today.

After looking both ways to make sure he wouldn’t get hit by a car, he crossed the street and rushed up the driveway and over to the front door of the house and rang the doorbell. He could hear a bit of shouting from across rooms, some thumping, and then the door opened.

It was his friend Nicole who answered the door. He held in his blush when he saw her, because he had a crush on the kind, red-haired girl. Her makeup lined her gray eyes well and her red bangs nearly obstructed her vision.

“Oh, hey Dante!” she cheerfully greeted him as she let him inside.

“Hi! Sorry I’m late, had some things to do at home,” he explained as he looked around inside the house. The house was very clean and tidy, especially the large living room the entry hall lead to. He sat on the couch as he heard a door open from upstairs.

“Who’s here?” a voice asked. He recognized it almost immediately. It was Katelyn, Nicole’s adoptive sister. They aren’t much alike, but they had many similarities and a strong, sister-like bond with each other.

Katelyn poked her head out of her room and looked out over the banister of the stairs into the living room.

“Oh, it’s Dante, alright,” she said as she went back into her bedroom, emerging once again after a minute in a pair of black leggings with fluffy gray ankle socks, and a flowy white and light blue striped t-shirt. Her light blue hair was down, and her side bangs covered her right eye slightly, but her icy blue eyes were still visible and her makeup was also applied.

“Yep, he’s here now!” Nicole stated happily as she sat next to him on the couch, smiling cheerfully. Her mid-thigh length black skirt fell to the sides of her legs as she sat down, and her red t-shirt was just right for keeping cool in the warm summer weather.

“When’s Travis coming?” Dante asked Nicole, who turned to face him.

“Oh, we don’t know, probably around-” Nicole began to answer him, but was cut off by the doorbell ringing. “Probably now!” she giggled, finishing her answer.

Katelyn slid down the railing of the stairs, slid into the entry hallway and opened the front door. Travis was standing there with his hands in the pockets of his green sweatshirt.

“Hey!” he greeted her, running a hand through his messy, white hair. Katelyn stepped back and let him inside the house, shutting the door after he was inside.

“Hey man!” Dante greeted his friend as they all sat on the couch together.

“Hey! Well, what should we do?” his friend asked, sitting on the other side of Dante.

“We could play Wii,” suggested Katelyn in her usual unimpressed, monotone voice as she pulled Wii controllers up from the side table next to the couch.

“I guess we could do that, I don’t have any other ideas,” Nicole accepted as she took two controllers and passed one to Dante. He took it and turned it on and was player two. Katelyn had turned it on before him.

Before they could decide what game to play, Dante’s phone rang in his pocket. He pulled it out and saw it was his mother. The only time she ever called him when he was in the overworld was when he was needed back quickly.

“Hey, uh, I have to go…” he informed them quickly as he stood up. Nicole looked up at him, puzzled.

“But… you just got here!” she exclaimed, also standing up. Dante felt bad for having to leave so soon, but if he stayed around them longer than he was allowed, they would see how he got to the overworld in the first place and would find out who he is. He couldn’t have that, and risk scaring them and ruining their friendship.

“I know, I’ll come back when I can, okay? There’s something I have to do,” he explained as he opened the front door and rushed out. He ran into the alley and found the ripped seam he came in through.

As he left, Nicole watched suspiciously. There was a feeling in her gut that was telling her that something was up.

“I’m going to follow him!” she decided confidently and ran out the door after him, leaving Katelyn and Travis confused on the couch. They reluctantly followed her, shutting the door behind her.

Just as Dante was about to slip back into his homeworld, he heard a voice call out to him.

“Dante?” It was Nicole, who was standing at the end of the alley. Dante jumped backward and tripped over the overturned trash can.

“What-what are you doing here?!” He was so startled he could hardly believe she almost caught him. He knew he had to get out of there, and fast.

“I came to follow you, to make sure you’re okay…” she explained, coming closer to him as he sat up. Katelyn and Travis followed her, as confused and curious as she was.

“You shouldn’t have done that!” Dante couldn't go back into his world, but if he didn’t soon, he wouldn’t be allowed back for a long time. Nicole stared at him with a puzzled look on her face, her soft gray eyes telling him she didn’t understand what was happening.

“What’s wrong? You can tell us!” Travis stepped next to Nicole and tried to coax it out of him. Dante knew they didn’t understand and would hate him if they found out. As far as he knew, they were normal. No, he couldn’t risk their lives for their curiosity being calmed.

“Nothing, I’m fine! I just… uh… have to do something!” he stuttered. A quick glance to his left and he saw that the seam was closing. He had to be fast, or there would be no choice to show them.

“What are you looking at?” Nicole asked, looking toward the direction of the seam. Of course, she couldn’t see it.

“Nothing!” he responded quickly. He knew they weren’t buying it anymore.

“It’s not nothing,” Katelyn interjected, crouching near the seam. Dante’s heart rate accelerated rapidly. If they didn’t leave soon, they would be exposed to his world.

“Don’t!” he yelled a warning. The seam was almost closed now.

“What is it that you just cannot tell us?” Katelyn interrogated him as she stood up again.

“It’s-it’s nothing!!” Dante knew they would get it out of him eventually. It was just a matter of time. He needed a plan, and he needed one fast.

As the nervous boy was racking his brain for ideas, a loud screeching was heard from the road. The sound of a large metal object colliding with another was even louder than the previous screeching.

The entire group was startled, most of all Nicole. She was faint of heart and her eyes were wide and glued to the road at the end of the alley. She stumbled backwards and tripped over Katelyn, and they both fell to the ground. Nicole rolled off of her and tried to stand, but fell backwards due to imbalance and fell into the seam.

Dante saw her fall into it and dove for her, reaching for her hand as the startled and confused girl fell. He swiped for her hand, but missed just as she was swallowed by the seam.

The other two were watching, horrified and confused as Nicole just vanished into thin air. Katelyn wasn’t about to let her friend be there alone, and would at least try and save her. And that’s just what she did. She jumped in with her and grabbed Nicole’s ankle, but nothing was holding either of them into the overworld. Both the boys grabbed onto Katelyn’s ankles and tried to pull the girls up, but they were too far into the seam to be extracted. The boys tried their hardest anyway, but eventually the weight of the two combined wasn’t enough to pull the girls back up. The four of them were all pulled into the demon world.
