Behind Those Fiery Eyes

For someone as tough as her, Katelyn has a lot of secrets and weaknesses. She is the one person you wouldn’t mess with, especially by hurting the ones she cares about. She would protect her loved ones with her life, and you’d better believe she’d give herself up for them in a heartbeat. But there’s more to her that nobody knows, more than anybody could even imagine.

5. Heavenly Feeling

All throughout the night, Katelyn couldn’t stop considering the idea that Travis had affection for her. No matter what she did, she couldn’t shake it. She decided to take matters into her own hands.

Laying on her bed on her back, staring at her ceiling, she got an idea. By now, the sun had set, and the full moon was slowly rising over the horizon as small twinkling stars began to dot the sky. There were no clouds, and through her open window came a gentle, warm breeze.

Katelyn grabbed her phone off her bedside table and texted Travis, who’s contact was saved underneath “The Flirt”. She typed furiously for a few seconds, then sent the message. She quickly stood and ran downstairs, and skidded to a stop in front of her shoes near the front door. She pulled them on and ran outside and began running to the park.

Travis heard his phone ping with a notification. He was still feeling sad after Katelyn hadn’t accepted him right away earlier, so he hesitated to look at it. Once he saw that she had texted him, his eyes opened wide with excitement and were glowing with hope. He slid the message across the screen and unlocked his phone, and read her message, which said: “Meet me at the park in 5. Gotta tell you something”

Without wasting time, he jumped up and put on his dark green hoodie while stuffing his phone in his jeans pocket. He ran out of his room and up the stairs from the basement, almost tripping in the process. Once he was up the stairs, he ran through the living room and out the front door, having not taken off his shoes when he got home. He ran down the dark street, illuminated in spots by the street lamps. While he was running down the sidewalk, he was wondering what she had to talk to him about. In his gut, he felt she would reject him, but in his heart, he had hope.

Katelyn was waiting for him in the park, sitting on the edge of the white stone fountain. It was in the center of a circle of trees and benches, with a few scattered purple, red, pink, and yellow wildflowers. She was staring up at the twinkling stars, but was then distracted from her love for astrology by the sounds of something rushing in the trees. She sat up straighter and peered through the darkness, relaxing once she saw the familiar mess of white hair and the bright green eyes stumble through into the light of the moon. She breathed out with relief as Travis looked up at her while running his fingers through his mess of hair.

“Hey, I’m… I’m here…!” he stammered, still catching his breath from running so fast. Katelyn stood and approached him slowly. She seemed almost angelic to him, with the light of the moon softly lighting up her face and making her icy blue eyes sparkle. She stopped when she was in front of him, but he was in almost a daze. He hadn’t thought she could have been any more beautiful in his head, but he was proven wrong in this night.

“So, I’ve been thinking about your question, and after a while, I found an answer,” she began, shifting her weight onto one leg and putting her opposite hand in her pocket. Travis snapped out of his daze and looked at her, waiting for her answer. She took a breath, then quickly grabbed the collar of his hoodie and pulled him down to her, and kissed him softly.

Travis was stunned. His mind was racing with a million thoughts at once. He couldn’t believe that after all of the times she punched or slapped him when he flirted with her, she was kissing him. After his shock began to fade, he started to kiss her back, putting one of his hands on the side of her cheek and the other on her waist. She didn’t move him away like she would have in the past. Her grip on the collar of his sweatshirt loosened and they enjoyed each other’s passion for the other as they were outlined by the moonlight and caressed with a soft breeze of warm air.

Their moment of passion lasted for no longer than ten seconds, and they pulled away for need of air. Both slightly panting, they smiled at each other, looking into one another’s eyes. As soon as she caught her breath, Katelyn spoke.

“My answer is yes. I will go on a date with you.”

Travis was starstruck, both by her kiss and by her answer. He could easily say this day was one of the best -if not the best- day in his life. His eyes light up with excitement and joy as he looked down at her.

Katelyn smiled at him and put her hands in her pockets again. Her icy eyes were sparkling more than the stars in the sky and her smile was brighter than the moon. Travis could have swore he saw feathered wings behind her and a glowing halo above her head before his excitement took over him. His head was spinning and his vision faded to black as he fell backwards and collapsed on the ground.

Katelyn kneeled next to him and felt his head and held his wrist for his pulse. He was alright, he had just fainted. She grinned a bit happily. She had always tried to hide it, suppress it, or make herself believe it wasn’t true, but she couldn’t deny she had feelings for him too. She had a good feeling about agreeing to a date with him, as if a future with him couldn’t lead to anything wrong ever again.
