There's nothing I can do.
She's a Romaine.

I can't have him.
He's a Lawrence.

A short story for the A Valentine's Day Writing competition.
I chose to do #2.

2. Ball

~Night of the ball~

"Now, son," My father begins, clasping a hand on my shoulders. We're in the elevator, getting ready to walk into the ball.
"There are lots of pretty girls at this ball."

I roll my eyes.
"I know, Dad." He nods.

"And you know what I'm going to say next?"
I nod, glancing at my shoes.

"Don't go near Serena Romaine."
I hear my mother scoffing.

"Or the Romaine family altogether.
They're wretched people who don't deserve anything they receive."

I shake my head and ignore them.
The elevator doors open, revealing a room full of people dressed in designing dresses and tuxedos.
We walk in and everyone that sees us start saying their hellos.

The girls see me and start batting their eyes and flashing their cleavage at me.
I try hard not to cringe and avert my eyes forward.

I look around and see her.
Serena Romaine.

She's standing at the refreshments.
She's wearing a beautiful white long gown.
It's all sparkling and it feels like the lights are only shining on her.

She makes eye contact with me and freezes.
Her brown eyes grow and I smile a little bit at her.
The corner of her mouth tilts up, forming a small smile too.

I lift my hand up slowing, going in to wave at her.
Then I feel a hand on my shoulder.

I look up and it's my father, looking down at me.
I drop my hand and look back.

She's gone.

"Don't forget," My father whispers in my ear, then walks away.
I exhale out of my nose.

Then I get an idea.

I walk over to the refreshments and grab a napkin.
Girls that were already standing there start giggling.
I roll my eyes and grab a pen that was inside of my tuxedo jacket.

He smiled at me.
For the first time in our lives, he smiled.

It felt like everyone was watching us.
Then his father walked up to him, glaring at me.

But it felt amazing.
I walk to the dance floor, just swaying to myself.

Then out of nowhere, I feel a hand place into mine.
I look at the person, but they were gone.

I look around, trying to see who it was.
Everyone else around me is dancing with someone.

I look at my hand and there's a folded napkin.

I open it.
It reads:

Come up to the roof.
I want to see you.~J.L.

I gasp, but quickly place my hand over my mouth.
I look around for my parents, and they're too busy talking to a group of other couples.

I look for the Lawrence.
They're dancing further near the windows.

I sneak towards the exit door.
I go up the flight of stairs that lead up to the rooftop.

When I open the door, there he was, leaning on the edge.
He turns around and smiles at me.

I smile back, not scared this time.

This is supposed to be a short story, so there isn't going to be a lot of chapters just one more. Comment what you thought of it!
