9. Chapter 9

16 WEEKS PREGNANT. November.

**Trigger warnings. Talk of drug overdose**

I was laying on the table at my doctors appointment waiting for the ultrasound tech to come in to check the baby. I wasn't expecting Calum to walk through the door but he did and sat down.

"Hi." I said looking at him. He looked like hell. His hair, that was sticking out beneath the beanie, was a mess. His eyes looked sunken in. He didn't say anything to me. "What are you doing here?"

"Didn't want you to find out the sex without me."

"I would never." I answered. The tension in the room could be cut with a knife and I think the tech knew when she walked in. "Can you tell the sex?" I asked the tech.

"No. I think it's still a little too early to see but if you want to make an appointment for when you're 20 weeks we can see." She smiled and printed out some pictures for us. "Have you signed up for any birth classes?" She asked.

"Oh, no. I haven't thought about it. Which ones do you suggest?" I asked cleaning off my belly and sitting up.

"We teach some here that I recommend. It's usually one of the techs here who teaches it. It's one night a week for as long as you want." She smiled handing me a booklet all about it.

"Thank you." I smiled standing up and leaving with Calum behind me.

"Can I have a ride?" He asked.

"Sure. To where?" I questioned pulling my keys out of my purse and heading to the car. "Did you like... Move out?" He shrugged as he got into the front seat.

"And to Ashton's."

"You know you don't have to live with me. You can go grab your stuff." I commented as I started driving to Ashton's. He stayed on his phone for most of the car ride making me feel like the worst person in the world. "So that's it?" I asked.

"Listen, Jayde, I'll be there for the baby but we both made it clear that we don't have feelings for each other. Talk to me if it's something about the baby. Ashton went to your place and got my stuff while we were at the appointment." I nodded. "See you in four weeks." He closed the door and went upstairs.

I was shocked that he could leave so easily over that stupid fight. I shouldn't have been, but I was. I should have never gotten my hopes up. I should have known that it wasn't going to end well.

"Well, I'm screwed." I mumbled and began driving home. I was so stupid. I was so stupid to ever get started with Calum. I knew it wasn't going to end well. I knew that he wasn't a good person. I knew that he didn't really care about anything that was important to a lot of other people.

"Jayde, hey." Ashton said when I pulled into my spot at my apartment.

"Hey." I smiled a little wrapping my sweater around my belly. "How's it going? Need any help?" I asked.

"Yeah uh, could you just help me find his stuff?"

"Sure." I headed to the apartment. I couldn't be mad at Calum for not wanting to live with me. I told him from the beginning that he could be as involved as he wanted to be. Obviously I didn't want him in and out of our child's life but I wasn't going to hold it against him if he didn't want to.

"That worked out huh?" Ashton asked making me chuckle. "You know I figured this time it would work out with him."

"What do you mean this time?"

"I mean I figured that this would make him grow up but he's back to doing drugs and selling them." He answered and I nodded as I sat on the floor organizing his stuff. "I wanted to call you to talk but I didn't want you to worry."

"It's life, Ash. If he wants to waste it away by doing that then he can." I shrugged. "I just put too much pressure on him to be the best dad."

"This isn't your fault, Jayde." I shrugged. "Listen, he doesn't want help and he doesn't want to stop doing what he's doing. No one can be blamed for that."

"I just wish I had been more careful. I love my baby but I never realized how hard it was going to be."

We got the rest of Calum's stuff packed and into Ashton's car and he drove off. I went back upstairs to start putting all of my stuff back. I got rid of so much stuff to fit Calum's stuff and now half of my closet is empty.

Two hours later I got a call from Ashton telling me to come to the hospital that Calum had overdosed and wasn't responsive. I had never been so scared in my entire life. It was the longest drive of my life. I nearly ran to into the hospital asking for his room. Once I got to his room his family and Ashton were all there.

"What happened?" I asked out of breath looking at him laying lifeless in the bed.

"He overdosed. Thankfully I got there in time and called an ambulance."

"What are the doctors saying?" I asked coming further into the room and standing next to Ashton leaning into him a little as he wrapped an arm around me.

"He's gonna be okay. They have him in a medically induced coma."

"When is he going to wake up?"

"No idea." Mali answered from the other side of Ashton. "Why wasn't he with you?" She asked.

"Uh, we got into a fight and he moved out." I answered looking from her back to him. "He's mad at me." I whispered. "God I would have never let him leave if I knew that was going to happen." I sighed.

"You can't blame yourself." Joy said. I really didn't want to talk to his family knowing that they thought I was a slut and wasn't good enough for him. We stay around for hours waiting for him to wake up.

"Wanna go get a coffee with me?" Mali asked and I nodded standing up to follow her. "Why don't you live together anymore?"

"We got into a fight." I answered. "My ex friend said that he was a deadbeat dad and he would just knock someone else up and it hurt his feelings so we got into a fight about that. I don't blame him for moving out. I'm difficult to deal with." I shrugged. No one ever really stayed with me. That's why I lived alone, no one ever wanted to live with me.

"Do you think he regrets moving out?"

"Probably not. He wasn't happy. I could tell. I was always around and I made him clean and stuff." I shrugged.

"He seemed happy about you and the baby."

"That's the thing, he wasn't happy about me just the baby. I'm sure that if he could just have the baby and not me he would be fine but we're kinda a package deal."

"He told us that he was with you."

"We weren't together. We were just going to raise the baby together." I shrugged. "I don't think he's happy about the baby."

"I'll help as much as I can with the baby. Even if he doesn't want to." We walked passed the front desk and a frantic women walked up the desk asking for Calum. "I'm his sister, who are you?" She questioned.

"I'm his girlfriend."

"He never mentioned a girlfriend." Mali said looking at me.

"We've only been together for like two weeks." Calum was never really the dating type. "Is he okay?" She asked.

"Yeah, he's alright. We were gonna go get a coffee and then head there do you want to come?" She asked. Why would she ask that? She was going to take his baby mama and his new girlfriend both to get a coffee?

"I'm just gonna go to his room. What room is he in?" She asked. Mali gave her the number before we started walking in silence to the cafe.

"God, Jayde, I'm so sorry." I shook my head.

"Do you think he was ever going to tell me? Do you think she knows that this is his baby?" I asked.

"I don't know."

"God, I feel so stupid." I stopped walking. "I think I'm just gonna go home." I answered walking the other way.

"Jayde, wait, just... Talk to him."

"No, Mali-Koa. He made it clear that he doesn't want me." I kept walking right out the front door.

"What do you mean she left?" Ashton asked Mali. "How could she just leave?"

"Let's go talk in the hall." Mali asked looking at Calum's girlfriend who's name she still didn't know. Her and Ashton walked down the hall to be out of ear shot of her family. "That's Calum's girlfriend." Mali commented.

"Shit." He sighed. "How does she even know that he's here?"

"I don't know but Jayde is crushed."

"Jayde doesn't like Calum that way." Ashton answered and he was right, she didn't like him that way but it still hurt like hell knowing that your babies father was already seeing someone knew.

"What do we do?"

"I can't chose between Jayde and Calum."

"Well neither can I."

"He's awake!" Joy came running to Mali and Ashton before running off to get a nurse or a doctor. Ashton and Mali both ran back to the room to find Calum with his eyes open asking for water.

"Oh, Cal!" Mali cried.

"What happened?"

"You took a little too much drugs bro. I found you unresponsive face down on the living room floor."

"Oh." He looked around the room just as the doctor came in asking about what happened which Calum couldn't remember. He was in a lot a pain but the doctor determined that that was from falling on his face.

"Should we talk about rehab?" The doctor asked and Calum looked around the room.

"Not right now." He commented and the doctor nodded before leaving.

"Honey-" Joy started.

"I know. I'll go I just... don't wanna talk about it right now."

I stayed in the hospital for a few days before they let me go. The doctor suggested that I go to rehab and I agreed that I should but I needed to think it all through first.

"Jayde didn't come see at all."

"She did. You were just asleep." Ashton commented helping me into the apartment. "She found out you have a girlfriend."

"Shit." I mumbled.

"She said you told her not to call you unless it was about the baby." He answered putting my bag of stuff down.

"Yeah, I did say that." I sat on the couch. "Is she upset?"

"I'm assuming. I haven't talked to her." He shrugged. "What about the baby?"

"What about the baby?" I asked. "I'm still it's dad."

"How are you going to make that work?" He questioned and I shrugged.

"I'll figure it out."

"You just have all the answers." He joked making me chuckle.

"I have plenty of time to figure it out." I closed my eyes laying down.

"It's gonna go by fast, Cal. I would figure it out now." He answered. "She needs you. She won't admit it, but she does."

"Then you go be the dad."

"Cal, if you don't want that baby, just tell her." He was right. I knew he was but I wasn't going to make any decisions about the baby right now. I needed to go to rehab to figure all of this out. I needed to get a clear head. To actually know what I was doing before I could make decisions like that.

I got up to start researching rehabs that I could go to. Jayde said she didn't need money from me just help from me with the baby but I couldn't help the baby if I wasn't in my right mind. I had to fix myself before I could start helping others.

Late that night I had gotten a call from Calum telling me that he would be going to rehab within the next few days.

"I know you're upset with me."

"Does she know?" I asked. "Does she know I'm pregnant with your baby?"

"Are you ever going to tell her?" I asked.

"I don't know." He answered truthfully.

"Good luck in rehab." I hung up and rolled over in bed to face the wall. He was ashamed of me and the baby. So ashamed that he couldn't even tell his girlfriend. It only made me feel worse. He texted me letting me know that if I wanted I could meet them at the airport tomorrow at 4 to see him off.

The decision to go was for him to know that I supported him. I went as a friend and not the mother of his child.

"Jayde." He said when I walked out from behind Ashton. "I'm so happy you're here." He rested his hand on my stomach. "I'm not going to disappoint you any longer." He said pulling me into him making me tear up. "This is just something I have to do."

"I'm not disappointed in you." I whispered against his chest. "I love you. Take care of yourself." I slipped an ultrasound picture into his back pocket. I wasn't sure if they would let him keep it but I hoped they did. Maybe it would be some type of motivation for him.

This was going to be good for him.
