13. Eleven

Throughout the whole car ride, I've had this anxious feeling in my stomach. For once, I'm super nervous. I'm scared that I'll let my mom down and drink and go back to my old habits. The last thing I need is to have my mom upset, waiting all night, worried as hell, wondering where I've been and what I've been doing. I can't put her through that again. I won't. When I see the house, I make up my mind that I'm not drinking, that I'm not taking anything from anyone. I'm just here for my friend.

We get out of the car and I stand by the passenger door, just staring at the house. Mercedes walks to my side of the car and looks at me.

"Are you coming?" She asks me. I blink and sigh before turning my attention to her.

"Yeah, I'm coming." She smiles before skipping over to me and linking arms.

"Good because I don't know what would happen to me if you chickened out." She takes a step, forcing me to take a step as well. We walk in the house, full of loud music, the thumping of the bass, and the sweaty, horny bodies grinding on one another. She drags me through the room. When I make contact with one of the sweaty bodies, I gag. For once I'd rather be anywhere but here, I think. When we finally see Alex, playing beer pong, Mercedes starts pulling my arm and hopping.

"Omgomgomg, Odessaaa!" I give her a weird look.

"What?" I ask her. She stops and puts both hands on my shoulders.

"Okay, what should I do?" She asks me. I shrug.

"I dunno, talk to him?" Her jaw drops, causing her mouth to hang open.

"Are you crazy? Hell no! I'm not going to do that! Come on, please help me!" I sigh.

"Mercedes, I don't know what you want me to do. How are you going to come to a party and not know what to do? There are millions of things to do."

"Okay, so how do I get his attention?" I look at her like she's dumb.

"Um, by talking to him?" She puts her hands on her hips.

"Would you talk to a guy that you liked at a party?" I nod.

"Yes, I would. I'd literally go up to him and tell him that I think he's hot. Then we'd probably make out and then we'd end up finding an empty room and then we'd-"

"Okay!" Mercedes puts her hand up, cutting me off. I close my mouth.

"How about a different route to talking to him?"

"Well, how about you just introduce yourself to him? Get a plastic cup and put a little alcohol in it so it doesn't look like you literally came here to see him like a stalker," I stop talking to her and give her a look. She smacks her lips and hits me. I grin.

"I'm just kidding." She glances at Alex who leans his arm back and makes the shot in the next cup on the other side of the table. People around him start cheering as he high fives another guy. Mercedes sighs before turning her attention back to me.

"Okay. I'll do it." She walks to the bar table and asks the guy who's serving the alcohol for a drink. He fills the cup with the alcohol and Mercedes takes a big gulp and cringes from the taste before giving me the thumbs up and making her way towards Alex.

At first, she just stands a little ways behind him. But then he takes a step back and bumps into her. Well, that's one way to get his attention, I think. He turns around and his lips are moving, probably apologizing. Mercedes smiles and tucks a strand of hair behind her ear as she's talking. Someone from the other side of the table calls his name. He puts a finger up as he turns back around facing Mercedes. I nod. So far so good, I think. I turn around and weave my way through the crowd, trying to get outside. As I get close to the door that leads to the entry outside, someone grabs my arm. I turn around, fixing my mouth to cuss the person out for grabbing me, but I stop myself once I see who it is. It's Kells. He changed his outfit to a plain white long T-shirt, blue jeans with a chain hanging on his side, and finished the look with dark blue high top converses. His tattoos snake down his arms and he has a black bandana tied around his head. Why does he have to look so good? I think. He grins at me as he lets go of my arm.

"I thought you weren't coming to this party?" He asks me. I point a thumb behind me.

"Mercedes begged me to go." He rolls his eyes and grins.

"Yeah right." I frown.

"It's true! Go ask her. She asked me to come because she's trying to impress this guy she's crushing on and needed me to come in case she did anything embarrassing." He takes a sip of whatever was in his red cup.

"Yeah, okay," disbelief in his voice. I roll my eyes and turn back around. Before I could take a step, he grabs my arm again.

"Okay, okay! Come on, girl. Chill for a minute." I place a hand on my hip and arch an eyebrow.

"What do you want, Kells?" Not trying to sound irritated, but don't want to sound excited that he wants my attention. He shrugs.

"Where you headed?" He asks me. I nod my head backward.

"Outside." He nods.

"Mind if I join you?" I grin.

"I kinda do." Then I turn around and walk towards the door. I hear Kells chuckle as he follows me.

I sit on one of the lawn chairs that are out here and watch teens jump and push people in the pool. Kells drags a lawn chair next to me and sits down. I can see him out of the corner of my eye staring at me. I try hard not to look back and act like I don't know. Finally, I turn my attention to him.

"Is there a reason you're staring?" I ask. He leans his head back on the lawn chair just shakes his head.

"Nah, just starin'." I grin and shake my head as I turn my attention back to the people. He holds out his drink to me.

"Want some?" I look at it for a second and shake my head. Kells gives me a confused look.

"Then why did you stare at it like you wanted to?" I sigh and look at the night sky.

"Because I promised my mom that I wouldn't do that shit anymore now that we're living here."

"Well, what is that shit?" I shake my head.

"I'm not gonna tell you. I barely know you, what makes you think I'm gonna spill all my darkest secrets to you?" Kells just shrugs and grins.

"It helps to talk about it." I look at him.

"Would you?" He shakes his head. I turn my attention ahead of me.

"Thought so. You're not the type." Kells sits up and faces me.

"What's that supposed to mean?" I look back at him.

"It means you're not the type of guy to just spill your emotions, your thoughts, your feelings, your secrets to anyone, whether you know the person or you don't. You just hold it in and play tough, acting like everything is fine." Kells just stares at me before glancing down at his shoes.

"Are you like that?" I nod. He leans back in the chair and takes a drink from his cup.

"Damn," He says. I nod. Damn is right, I think.
