The witch smirked at her.

She was tall.

Her long, black gown drifted in the fog.

Her black boots tapped along the heavy stone steps.

"I'm Lucinda Deere Grant, Head Witch of Halloween City in New York". Ellie gazed at her. "Ellie. This is Candle, my favourite cat in the whole world", she said. Lucinda stared at her. "Ah, your familiar".

"What's that?", Ellie asked her.

"It's a name you call for a cat who belongs to you", Lucinda answered her.

"Oh, right", Ellie said.

"Now, I'm sure that your mother and father will approve you being one of us", Lucinda said. Before Ellie could respond, her mother arrived.

"Who is it, Ellie? You're supposed to be asleep", her mother asked.

"It's Lucinda. She's someone who wants to take care of Halloween for me", Ellie answered. She hugged Candle while her mother digested what she was saying.

"I haven't seen you around here in New York", she said.

"Well, I have family in Salem, Massachusetts", Lucinda said. She grinned at her. Ellie shivered, as she yawned.

"Isn't that where the witches were burned to death in 1692".

"Yes, but a lot of our kind escaped from the Inquisitor of Lower Manhattan E. Edward James. He was a ruthless man in his time in the 17th century. He knew what Halloween meant to him in the early days, and nights".

"Well, Ellie has to go to bed. It's eight-thirty in the evening".

"Fine by me. I have to attend a Midnight ceremony. Good night, Ellie". Lucinda bowed, then glided along the stone path towards her grey carriage. Ellie blinked as she saw a African-American woman witch gaze at her with hatred. Ellie couldn't believe what she wanted from her. She closed the front door, and headed to bed.
