22. Everything Goes Downhill

The next morning, Jessica was wandering around the basement when she kicked something over. She looked down and saw a bottle. She picked it up and saw it was empty.

Why was there a bottle in the first place? Jack didn't drink, or Jessica didn't think he did. She kicked it off and went upstairs.

She looked around the house for Jack, so that she could ask if they could play together. Jack always liked to play with her, especially snowball fights, which he knew she loved.

However, when Jessica went to Jack's bedroom, she saw the door was closed. Jack rarely closed his door, and when he did, it was usually because he was doing something he didn't want her seeing, like making a surprise present, which he'd done a couple of times.

She knocked on the door, but there was no answer. She knocked again, but once again, no answer. She quietly opened the door and saw a sight she never thought she would see.

Jack was sitting near the window, staring at the snowy landscape. That wasn't the problem. The problem was the bottle in his hand.

Jessica slowly went closer. "Daddy?" she asked.

Jack slowly turned his head towards her, but it was like he wasn't seeing her. His eyes looked glassy, as though he was dead. Then he suddenly sprang out of his chair and grabbed Jessica around the throat, causing her to fall backward.

Jessica was so startled she didn't do anything at first. Then she hit Jack on the side of the head, and he fell, letting Jessica escape.

She quickly ran out, slamming the door behind her, running.

She ran through the forest near the house as fast as she could, climbing up a tree and waiting.

She saw Jack walking by a couple minutes later, stumbling. She watched him from the top, waiting for him to pass by. When he collapsed, she jumped down from the tree and shook him.

"Daddy? Daddy, answer me!" Jessica cried. Jack didn't wake up.

Jessica picked him up and carried him home, setting him down on the couch while she sat on the floor near his hand, holding it, waiting for him to wake up.

He woke up two hours later, confused. When he saw Jess crying, he stroked her hair. Jessica looked up at him and Jack saw her face break into a smile.

"Daddy!" She hugged him tightly, causing Jack to nearly break his balance. He said, "Jess, what happened? What's wrong? The last thing I remember is sitting near the window..."

"You were drinking, Daddy. Something you've never done."

Jack stared at her, and then finally swore. Jessica was shocked to hear that, because Jack never swore, and only did it when he was angry at himself.

"I'm sorry, kiddo. I never meant to get drunk. It's just..." He sighed and whispered, "God."

Jessica snuggled next to Jack, and he smiled at her and whispered, "I promise, I'll do my best to never do it again."

Jessica trusted him once again.

However, duty was going to be calling her name, and they were going to be separated for longer than a year.
