December kalender

10. 14. December "Anohana"

Anohana or the real title "ano hi mita hana no nama o bokutachi wa mada shiranai"

Jinta Yadomi is peacefully living as a recluse, spending his days away from school and playing video games at home instead. One hot summer day, his childhood friend, Meiko "Menma" Honma, appears and pesters him to grant a forgotten wish. He pays her no mind, which annoys her, but he doesn't really care. After all, Menma already died years ago.
At first, Jinta thinks that he is merely hallucinating due to the summer heat, but he is later on convinced that what he sees truly is the ghost of Menma. Jinta and his group of childhood friends grew apart after her untimely death, but they are drawn together once more as they try to lay Menma's spirit to rest. Re-living their pain and guilt, will they be able to find the strength to help not only Menma move on—but themselves as well?

Losing friends is hard, but knowing that they died while you were hanging out is harder. Jinta the main character is seen as a kid, where he knew Menma. He liked her a lot but never told her. He wanted to, but when his friends started praying into the private question, he said that she was ugly and who could ever love her instead. Saying that in front of Menma somehow breaks his heart. He never wanted to hurt her, but she didn't cry. Instead, she just gave him a little smile.

Seeing her smile made him hate his own words even more. He then runs away from the hideout that they were all playing in. As he runs off, Menma runs after him. She hopes to get to him in time but doesn't instead she slips and falls down a hill, hitting her head and dying on the spot. All of the friends then separate. They can't stand being together anymore, everything is too sad.

They all grow old without each other, goes to different schools and never really speaks together anymore. But as summer vacation nears them, Jinta suddenly gets a ghost. No other than Menma, she looks like a kid, but somehow seems older still. He can touch her, see her and hear her. He is the only one who can even speak with her. And as they talk, she says that she wants to hang out with everyone once more. She wants to see them all playing and smiling again.

Thinking that this wish is her last wish. He does a little work to get to hang out with everyone again, but as he does this, Menma gets to see how different they all ended up being. Two of them hates Jinta, doesn't want to hang out with him, but as he tells them about the ghost, they instead make fun of him and starts dressing up as Menma and running around in the forest, so the people who believe him see the dress. They end up running after the shadow in the distance, even Menma gets all pumped up. "Let's chase me!" She yells as she Tetsu starts chasing the person dressed up as her. He doesn't know that the real Menma is right next to her.

Atsumu, of course, gets cut in the act, as he actually ends up sliding down the same hill as Menma. But he doesn't get hurt in any way. He instead calls Jinta a jerk and starts yelling that it is unfair that he is the only one who can see Menma. Weren't he, her friend too, so how come she doesn't show herself to him too! He hates the fact that she doesn't show herself for him too since he loved her too. Menma ends up crying and hugging him, he can't see her but he just feels his shoulders getting a little heavy.

This is how they end up hanging out together, they want Menma to get peace again. But it doesn't seem to get her anywhere as they hang out. Instead, she starts talking about the time when they were little and wanted to see the fireworks.

But as they prepare the fireworks, she starts to break down. She can't stand, walk or feel her legs anymore. Jinta then says that he will carry her up the hill, so she will be able to see the fireworks. But while he walks, she asks him to put her down, and he does. But as soon as her feets touches the ground, she disappears from his eyes. She is now standing right in front of him, but he is unable to hear, touch or see her. He starts running around with the others trying to find her.

This anime is mostly about friendship, sure there is a little love in it. Since Menma is in love with Jinta and Jinta loves her. But the other friends love each other like that too, but can't seem to say it. But that's like one episode, and was alright. I didn't feel sad when they talked about it, I felt a bit bad, but mostly because the girls were arguing about being in love with one of the guys, while the guy was in love with the other and the other was in love with Jinta. Confusing? yes, but not if you watch it. You can easily feel that one of the girls like the guy and the other way around.

9 out of 10. I loved the story and the songs, but it got a little boring along the way, but quickly turned around again. So differently an anime you should watch.
