6. The New Star

I ran down the stairs and toward the front door, but before I got there someone's arms wrapped around me. "Let me go! Let me go! I hate you. Why did you do it to him? He was a good father to us, and you killed him. Why!?"

"Calm down Sarah. I didn't kill him," came a familiar voice. Once I looked up and noticed it was our doctor, I felt foolish. Our doctor, Dr. Jay, had always been a cute one. He was only six years older than me, but he was still cute. And not only was he cute but so was his sister. His sister was two years older than me and four years younger than him.

"Hey Jay, please help me. Kale... Kale... Brian is upstairs... dead." It was hard for me to say the truth. To believe that Brian had been killed by Kale, but I had to start believing it no matter what.

"Shh, I'm here Sarah. I need to go check on Brian; I..." I could never let him go upstairs. That could be the most dangerous place ever. Especially with Kale up there. Oh god Kale. Why?! I thought he was the one I'd fall in love with. Why did he have to kill Brian? I mean, did he kill Brian? Am I sure he killed Brian?

"Jay? Are you crazy? I may not be a hundred percent sure Kale killed Brian, but, if he did, I don't want you hurt. Okay?" Why did I sound so confident? That was weird, but as I finished my sentence something even more weird happened. Kale had apparently walked to the top of the stairs and had been standing there. I was about to turn and leave the house when I saw him up there.

"He's alive, Brian's alive," he muttered. It was either me or he was telling the truth. Kale was soaked in blood and most of it was near his chest; like he was leaning over Brian. Kale turned around and left back down the hall. If it wasn't for all the blood I would of walked out of the house, but for some reason it felt like I believed Kale. Not knowing what I was doing, I walked up the stairs after Kale, and went to the bedroom with Brian.

Brian laid there. I walked closer to him and knelt down over him. I couldn't believe my eyes nor my ears. His chest was moving up and down. I could hear his ragged breathing. It was unbelievable. I jumped up in joy, "Jay. Jay. You won't believe this. He's really alive."

After I screamed in joy one more time, I could hear Jay's foot falls coming up the stairs. He didn't waste any time because, not long after I hollered, he entered the bedroom. Jay ran to Brian and started checking for his pulse. "Jay, he's a vampire, remember? He has no pulse."

"Oh right. I... forgot for a second..." he cut off as a cough came from the other side of the room. Both Jay and I looked up to see Kale sitting on the couch. The bedroom was pretty big. It contained a king sized bed, a desk, dresser, body mirror, and a couch. It was a pretty nice room. Most of the rooms in this house was the same way.

"Kale," I whispered. "What are you doing in here? Main question, why did you try to kill Brian? Why?" I wanted so many answers, but I knew he couldn't answer them all now.

"I didn't kill him. I didn't try. I wouldn't try. Look at it this way. I may not be a full blooded vampire, but I have it in me. I don't hate vampires. I wouldn't kill the one person that loved me. I just couldn't." Why did it sound so true? Why am I finding it so hard not to believe him?

"What do you mean? If you haven't noticed, I've fallen in love with you over the years. And you were the only other person up here at the time. Just you and Brian. You had to be the one that killed him... well tried."

He finally let the first tear in years fall down his cheek,  "No I wasn't."
