9. e i g h t

We get to the party, and Madison starts to freak.

"I don't know if I can do it. What if he laughs in my face in front of people? What if when I go to ask him, he's kissing a girl? What if-" I couldn't take it anymore, so I cut her off.

"Maddy! Stop with the what-ifs! Just go in there and have fun. If you do tell him tonight, that's a big step for you. You're doing this for you, not for him. It's good for your confidence and your self-esteem. And who cares if he rejects you? We have to deal with rejection. It's better to get rejected now so you can cope with it. Trust me. I know exactly how you're feeling right now. I had a crush on of my brother's best friends. We were really close friends and so I told him how I felt. He turned me down and said he liked me better just as friends. It stung for a few days, but I got over it and to this day we're still close friends. Besides, I really don't think it's going to ruin your friendship with him. You basically grew up with him. So it's all good. Just breathe and be yourself." She gives me a nervous smile.

"Thanks, H." I raise an eyebrow at her.

"H? We're giving each other nicknames now?" She laughs.

"Duh. You're like a big sister I never had. I really like you." I place a hand on my chest.

"Aww. I really like you too. Fine then, you're M." She shrugs and smiles again.

"It's cool with me." We get out of the car. and make our way to the party. I give her an encouraging smile before departing and making my way towards the beverages. Mama really needs a drink. I pour myself a cup of vodka and mix it with lemonade. Then I take a big gulp of it, forcing it down my throat. I down the rest of it and refill my cup. Before I can take another sip, I feel someone's hand on my shoulder.

"Woah, Nelly. Slow down there, killer. I'm sure there will be more later." I turn around and see Ashton. Thank God, another familiar face. I smile.

"Hey, Ashton." He smiles back.

"Rough day?" He asks. I shake my head.

"Nah. Just stuff has happened in one day and my head is spinning and I'm in a position I thought I wouldn't be in for a while," I tell him. He nods.

"Does it involve Luke?" I cock my head, suspicious.

"Why? Has he told you anything?" I ask him. He shrugs.

"Not really. It's just ever since we met you, he's been, how do I say it... weird." I sigh and take another big sip of my drink.

"Wanna dance?" I ask him. He grins.

"Sure. I'm just gonna give you a heads up, you might get a little uncomfortable with my dancing because I'm an amazing dancer." I laugh.

"I've actually taken dance lessons," I say. He stops walking.

"Well, that's not fair. You'll be better!" I just smile and walk to the living room where everyone is dancing.

After getting dressed in my usual attire (all black), I drive to the party that the boys are at. I wonder if Haiti's gonna be there, I think. As soon as that thought crossed my mind, I smack my head.

It's going to be super awkward if she is there! We haven't said anything to each other since the kiss. What am I going to do? Let's just hope she's not there. I park my car and make my way to the party. I walk inside and hundreds of people are here. I walk towards the living room where everyone is dancing and see Michael and Crystal instantly. I scowl. He's been an ass lately. I walk through the maze of people that are dancing and I bump into someone.

"Oh, crap. My bad-" It's Ashton. With... Haiti. She stops dancing and her smile disappears. But Ashton is oblivious to what's going on.

"Hey, Luke! Look, it's Haiti!" Haiti quickly fixes her face.

"Hey, Luke! I had no idea you were going to be here!" She says, trying to not make it obvious. I give her a weird smile and an awkward wave.

"Heyyy, Haiti," I say. Ashton gives me a weird look.

"Dude, you alright?" He asks.

"I, uh. I'm-I'm-" I look back and forth to Haiti and Ashton. Haiti looks down at her shoes. I just turn and walk out to the backyard.

Way to go, Luke. Great first impression after kissing her. Just smooth, My devil says. Shut up! I sit down on a lawn chair and sigh, raking my hands through my hair. What am I doing? A few minutes later, I hear something being dragged through the grass. I look up and it's Haiti with a lawn chair in her hands. She sets it down next to me and looks at me.

"Is it okay if I sit here, or do you need some time alone?" I shake my head.

"No, it's okay." She gives me a small smile and sits down. We sit in silence and she takes a sip of her drink. Then she passes it to me. I take it and take a drink.

"So..." She says. I nod.

"We should probably talk about that kiss." I nod again.

"Yeah, we should." I hand her her cup back, but she puts her hand out and shakes her head.

"That's my second cup. Besides, you seem like you need it more than me." I grin and finish it.

"Listen, Luke. If you're wondering if I liked the kiss or whatever, I did. It's the first kiss I've had since my breakup with Jevon. And I like being around you. But, for one, you're in a relationship and this kiss counts as cheating. Two, even if I do catch feelings for you, which right now they're all over the place, I'm not going to do stuff with you on the sly while you're still dating Arzaylea." I nod, understanding what's she saying.

"Yeah, you're right. It's just that, I don't know, you're different. I can't really explain it at the moment, but hopefully, we can move on from this and be friends? For now, at least." She smiles and nods.

"I would very much like that." I smile and sigh in relief.

"Good." She stands up and extends her hands out to me. I toss the cup on the ground and reach for them. She pulls me up and gives me a hug.

"Now, let's go back inside and enjoy the rest of the party." I nod and walk inside with her.

As soon as Haiti and I part ways, I walk around, trying to see if there's anyone else here that I know. I see a couple girls that I know standing with some other girls, holding drinks. That's weird. They said they were busy, I think. I walk up to them.

"Hey, guys." They look at me and their eyes grow.

"Madison! Wha-what are you... doing here?" My friend, Sadie asks me.

"I'm at a party," I say. She gives me a tight smile.

"Yeah, you are..."

"What are you two doing here?" I ask them. Charlotte speaks.

"Uh, we, uh, decided not to go to the movies." Sadie quickly nods.

"Yeah, we just weren't feeling it and we thought that maybe you had found something else to do so we decided to go to this party at last minute." She replies.

"Totally. We actually just got here." Charlotte says. I nod, but not really believing them.

"Well, is it cool if I just hang with you two?" I ask. They quickly glance at one another.

"Um, we're actually uh, meeting up with some guys and uh..." Sadie looks to Charlotte.

"Uh, going to uh... smoke." I scrunch up my nose.

"You're going to smoke?" I say, sounding disgusted. Since when do they ever smoke? They both nod.

"Yep. We wanna try something new and these boys said they had weed and we were like 'everyone smokes weed' so uh, that's definitely what we're going to do."

"Yeah, and we know that you don't smoke and would be completely uncomfortable so you probably just shouldn't come," Sadie says. I roll my eyes.

"Whatever." I turn around and before I even get a step in, I hear them whispering.

"God, she's so annoying. She needs to go back to Australia." I hear Sadie says. Charlotte snickers.

"Did you forget? Her parents sent her to Luke because they can't even stand her." They both burst into laughter. My eyes immediately start to fill with tears. I quickly walk away and head to the kitchen. I grab a cup and fill it with all sorts of alcohol. My brother is going to kill me if they find out I'm drinking, I think hesitating to take a sip. Screw it. I tilt the cup back finishing all of it. My throat burns from how strong the alcohol is. I fill my cup up three more times. I go for a fourth refill and I feel the alcohol working its magic. After finishing my fourth cup, I can tell I'm drunk, but not all the way. I walk out the kitchen, passing two people making out on the doorway. I stumble over my feet and giggle at myself. I pass all the people that are dancing and see Calum sitting on the couch, talking to someone.

You're doing this for you, not for him, Haiti's voice rings in my head. I giggle. Haiti get out of there! I walk over to Calum (more like trip over my feet again) and plop onto the couch between Calum and the person he's talking to. Calum gives me a shocked look before smiling.

"Hey, Mad. What are the odds that you're at this party." I just stare at his dark brown eyes. God, he's so beautiful. Calum snaps his fingers in my face.

"Hello? Earth to Madison, is she there?" I shake my head.

"Yeah, I'm here." Sounding grumpy. What the hell? Calum's expression changes and looks concerned.

"Hey, are you okay? You seem kind of out of it." I sigh.

"I think I'm tipsy." I hiccup. He raises his eyebrows at me.

"You're tipsy? Better not run into Luke then." I ignore his comment and sit facing him all the way.

"Cal, are you seeing anyone?" He gives me a confused look.

"No, not really. Why?" Without even thinking, I grab his face and kiss him. I can feel him tense up, but after a few seconds, he relaxes and cock his head a little bit. I feel his hand rest on my waist.  Holy shit, this is happening! A minute later, but really it felt like an hour, I pull away and let the air out that I've been holding. Instantly I feel embarrassed and look down, letting go of his face. Calum puts a finger underneath my chin and lifts my head up, forcing me to look at him.

"Why are you looking away?" He asks softly. I blush hard and shrug.

"I dunno..." He pulls me in and wraps his arm around me. I lay my head on his shoulder.

"We'll talk about this later. Right now, let's just chill." I nod and smile. I just kissed Calum Hood!

I walk inside to this lame party that I know the boys are at. Why do they even go to these high school parties? They're so dumb. Once I walk inside I look around. Ashton is dancing with a bunch of girls, jumping like a lunatic, Michael and Crystal are in a corner smooching on one another (not surprising). I roll my eyes. Gag. I look to my right and see Calum and Madison snuggled up on one another. Um, ew? Then right in front of me is something that I was hoping not to see. It's Luke dancing and laughing with Haiti, holding hands. They're all over each other. After seeing that, my head explodes. I march over to them and push Haiti off of Luke.

"What the fuck?!" She says. I glare at her. Luke grabs my arm.

"Arz, what the hell are you doing?" He says, accusingly. I whip my head at him.

"What am I doing? What the fuck are you doing?!" He gives a dumb look.

"What do you mean, I'm dancing." I roll my eyes. Everyone stops dancing and are looking at us.

"Would you chill? We're just dancing." Haiti buts in. This bitch. I point a finger at her.

"Shut your fucking mouth. I get it, you want my boyfriend. Well, you can't have him, he's obviously in a freaking relationship!"

"Excuse me?"

"You heard me. You're always hanging with my boyfriend. Go get one of your own." Haiti rolls her eyes and laughs bitterly.

"You're fucking sad and it's ridiculous." Before I can fire something back, Luke gets in front of me.

"Why are you acting like a jealous, psycho girlfriend?" Is he serious?

"A jealous, psycho girlfriend? Ever since she became you and the boys' photographer, all I ever hear you say is 'Haiti, Haiti, Haiti'. Well, I'm so fucking tired of hearing her name! And then I come here and see her grinding on you!"

"Woah! I wasn't grinding on him. We were clearly dancing. You're just paranoid and insecure to see that." She says. I couldn't stop myself. I grab her hair and pull it. She grabs my tank and rips the strap. I start to hit her, but she starts to swing and hits me in the jaw. I hear someone yell, "Ash, Cal! Come help me!" Next thing I know, I feel someone's hands wrap around my waist and prying my hands out of Haiti's hair. But Haiti is still hitting me. I try hitting her back, but then the hitting stops.

"You fucking cunt! Stay the fuck away from my man!" I scream at her. Ashton and Calum had a hold on each of her arms.

"Tell your man to stay away from me, considering he must be talking about me a lot. Maybe he's tired of your pasty ass and wants a little sweetness in his life. Some chocolate." I try to pull away from Luke, but he has a strong grip on me.

"Arzaylea, quit! We're leaving!" He drags me outside and I push him off of me.

"What the hell is your problem?" He yells at me.

"What's my problem? Every time we're at somewhere, I see you with her!" He throws his hands up in the air.

"Who fucking cares? We're friends! You do this everytime I become friends with another female!" I walk back to my car and flip Luke off.

"Whatever, Luke." I glance back and he has his hands on top of his head.

"You're fucking crazy." I hear him say. I ignore him and get back into my car. Then I speed off.
