23. TWENTY-ONE

Sherryn's Mom-

After Sherryn confessed that Kyle has been beating her, I lost it. I was at the police station to see if they had heard anything about Sherryn and Toby and I decided to call her, hoping she'd pick up. To my luck, she did. But when she said told me what Kyle does to her, I snapped.

I sped out of the parking lot at the police station and drove directly to my apartment complex. When I made it, I park my car and storm into the building. I bang open my door, to see Kyle, in a ragged t-shirt and dirty jeans, sitting in the living room watching TV. He looks at me with a confused expression.

"What's wrong, babe? Why do you look like that?" He asks me. I flare my nose.

"You son of a-" I pick up the nearest thing that was closest to me, which happens to be a vase, and throw it at him. His gasps and he manages to duck in time, leaving the vase to fly past him and smash against the wall. He looks at me like I'm crazy.

"What the hell was that for?!" He hollers. I march up to him, pointing a finger.

"How dare you," I growl. He gives me a questionable look.

"What? What do you mean?" I raise my hand and slap him, his head turning in that the direction. He holds his cheek and looks at me with wide eyes.

"Who do you think you are, laying your hands on MY DAUGHTER!" I scream. That's when his face turns pale.

"You are NOT her father! You don't get to touch her in such a way where you're beating her!" Kyle looks behind me. I follow his direction and turn around. There are a few people standing outside of my apartment door, watching us with confused looks. I forgot that I didn't close my door, so people heard me screaming. At this point, though, I didn't care. I whip back around, facing Kyle. I start hitting him.

"You fucking touched my daughter, causing her to leave! You made me think I was a terrible mother, made me think it was all my fault that she ran. But it was YOU! How fucking dare you do that to her! Who the fuck do you think you are!" I continue to hit him, my eyes squeezed shut, tears falling down my face. After a few minutes, I feel a pair of arms wrapped around my waist, pulling me away.

"Okay, Ms. Williams. Let's calm down." It was one of my neighbors. I didn't want to calm down, though. I wanted to beat him until his last breath.

"Who knows how long you've been beating my daughter. And she never told me because she was scared of you!" He tries to leave, but two bulky men grab him and pin him down on the floor.

"Oh no, big guy. You don't just get away with beating a girl. Don't worry the police is coming." A couple of women come to my aid to calm me down as I burst into tears again. How could I have let this happened? I think to myself.

After a few minutes of more people crowding my apartment, the police finally arrives. And it happens to be the same two police officers that are helping me find Sherryn and Toby. They look confused as they see a crowd of people going in and out of my apartment, two big men holding down Kyle, and a few women trying to calm me down. They walk towards me.

"Ma'am, what happened here?" The first officer asks. I slowly breathe, so I don't get worked up again. I point at Kyle.

"Him," I say, my voice sounding raspy from all the screaming and crying. They both turn their heads at Kyle.

"What about him, Miss?"

"He... has been beating my child." The second officer's face hardens. He leans into the first officer.

"I knew there was something odd about him...," He whispers to the first officer.

"Ma'am, how do you know this?" The first officer asks me.

"I called Sherryn today after I had left the police station talking to you two," I start. The officers nod, telling me to go on.

"She picked up and I kept asking her why she left. She finally told me that it's because Kyle beats her. Toby saw him beating her, too." I start crying again.

"I don't even know for how long. She always lied to me, telling me that she was getting into fights at school, but it was because of him." I raise my hands and cover my face as I continue to sob. The women that were still with me, tries to calm me down again. After a minute of crying, I wipe my face.

"Get that fucker out of my apartment," I scowl, glaring at Kyle, who was still being pinned to the ground. The second officer walks towards the men and handcuffs Kyle, resiting the Miranda rights and leading him outside. The first officer crouches in front of me.

"Ma'am, we're glad we came because he wanted to let you know that someone called that they saw Toby and Sherryn in another town." I gasp and rise in a standing position.

"Where?!" The officer stands up.

"Just a few hours away from here. My partner and I were going to tell you and Toby's mother about it and then go to the town to find them." I vigorously nod, nudging him to the door.

"Then, please go! Go find them and bring them home, please!" He gives me a small smile.

"Will do, ma'am. And about Kyle-" I put my hand up.

"I hope he rots in hell," I say, turning my body away from him, letting him know that I don't want to hear about him. The officer nods and walks out of my apartment. I glance at the door and slouch in my seat. I sigh and rub my face. Please come home, Sherryn.
