22. TWENTY

Sherryn-

My phone has been blowing up from people from Toby and I's school, wondering where we're at. I'm not sure why they would be worried, though. Toby and I aren't the most liked people at our school. I honestly don't know why I still have my phone since my only real friend is Toby and was basically the only one I talked to on the phone except for my mom. Just thinking about her, makes me stop in my tracks. Toby notices that I've stopped walking and turns around.

"Hey, are you okay?" He asks. I sigh and nod.

"Yeah, I'm fine," I say, knowing that I don't sound like it. Toby chooses not to push any further. Right now, we're walking around the town that we're currently in, trying to find a place to eat. I see a breakfast restaurant down the street and nudge Toby.

"Toby, look." I point to the restaurant. He throws his head back and sighs.

"Thank God, I'm starving. Come on." We pick up our speed and start heading towards the restaurant. We open the door and the bell rings, indicating that there are customers. An elderly lady walks out from the back of the restaurant with a smile on her face.

"Good morning, children," she says in a southern accent. We smile back as she walks up to us. She stops and squints at us.

"Shouldn't you kids be in school?" She questions. I quickly glance up at Toby, my eyes wide. Toby's face looks paler than usual as he stutters up an answer.

"Uh, we, uh..." The lady's face relaxes as a smile returns back to her face.

"Ah, it's alright. Y'all ain't my kids anyway. Come on, I'll take you to a booth so y'all can get something to eat." She turns around and starts walking away. Toby and I let out a relieved sigh that we weren't going to get in trouble. We follow after her and sit in the booth she's chosen for us. She places two menus in front of us.

"What would y'all like to drink?" She asks.

"Water is fine with me," Toby says. I nod, agreeing with him.

"Same as me." The lady nods.

"Okay, then. And my name is Sandy, so if y'all need anything, just call for me okay?" We both nod and give her a smile. She walks away to get our drinks. I look at Toby.

"Oh my gosh, I thought we were screwed for a minute," I say to him. He vigorously nods.

"Me too." He picks up his menu.

"What should we get?" He asks. I shrug.

"We should probably share a meal. How much money do we have?" He pulls out his wallet and takes a look.

"We have about a hundred dollars." I nod.

"I'm really not that hungry anyway, so do you wanna share?" He nods.

"Sure. We can get the All You Can Eat Pancakes since I guess it's pancakes day in this restaurant and they're free. And then we can get two plates of eggs and two plates of bacon. All in a good price." I nod and look out the window. I see a little girl holding hands with her mom. She's smiling really big and skips with her pink Hello Kitty backpack. I start to get teary-eyed as it makes me think of myself when I was like that with my mom. I sigh, probably too loudly. Toby glances at me.

"Sherre, what's wrong? And don't tell me it's nothing." I blink the tears that started to form away and look at him.

It's just... I miss my mom. I know she's worried about me." I glance down at my hands that were resting on the table. I hear Toby sigh. He reaches over and grabs my hand. I look up at him and attempt to give him a smile. He squeezes my hand. Then Sandy comes back with our drinks and we quickly pull away from each other.

"Okay, here are two glasses of water. Are y'all ready to order?" She asks, pulling out her notepad from her apron. We both nod. Toby tells her what we want as she scribbles it all down.

"Alrighty! Your food should be ready in about fifteen to twenty minutes." Then she walks away to another customer. As we wait for our food, I pull out my phone from my bag. I look at all the messages I've received from people.

Andrew: Hey baby. Why aren't you at school? I'm missing you

I roll my eyes at that text. I'm sure he just needs someone to suck him off. I scroll through my social media. Then my phone starts going off.

My mom is calling me.

I instantly freeze and stare at it as it rings a couple of times. I see Toby out of the corner of my eye looking at me.

"Hey, what's wrong?" He asks. I slowly turn my phone around, showing him. He looks at it and sighs. He brings his hands to his face and starts rubbing it, due to stress.

"W-what should I do, Toby?" I ask, my voice shaking. He uncovers his face and looks at me.

"Answer it," he quietly says. I sit there in shock. Answer? He wants me to answer it? I look at my phone again and press answer, then I slowly brought it to my ear.

"H-hello?" I quietly say. It's silent on the other end for a few seconds.

"Sherryn." My mother's voice rings out in relief. My eyes grow wide from hearing her voice.

"Where are you?" She asks, worriedness evident in her voice.

"Do you know how scared and worried I am right now? Why did you leave?" She starts asking questions, her voice cracking. My vision starts to get blurry from tears forming.

"Mom..." I trail off.

"Is it because I'm a terrible mother?" She asks. That causes tears to fall down my face. I rapidly shake my head, knowing that she can't see me.

"Is it because I was almost never at home? I know that you would get upset about me having to work so much at the hospital. I did it so you could have the stuff that normal teenage girls get. I didn't want you to-" I cut her off. My heart hurting from hearing her say that.

"Mom!" I loudly say. Customers in the restaurant turn and look at me like some spoiled teen. Toby reaches across the table and grabs my hand.

"You're not a terrible mother. You're the best there ever is. I'm so grateful for you. So please don't say that you are." I hear her crying and sniffing.

"Honey, where are you? Why'd you leave?" I look down at Toby and I's intertwined hands.

"You don't understand, Mom... I can't really explain."

"Please, tell me. I'll do anything just to have you back. And did you know that Toby is missing too? Is he with you? His mother is looking for him." I look up at Toby. He sees it and scrunches his eyebrows. What? he mouths.

"Stuff happened, Mom. I can't really say."

"Why? You can trust me. You know I won't judge you. Kyle and I-" Hearing his name cause something to combust something inside me. I pull my hand out of Toby's grasp.

"Kyle is a fucking dick," I say, hatred in my tone. Toby's face looks shocked and his mouth opens.

"What?" My mom says back.

"I ran because of Kyle. He's a fucking ass, Mom and I hate him. I hate him and I hate Dad. They're no good and I wish they never came into my life." It's silent on the other end again.

"Sherryn, what are you talking about?"

"Kyle doesn't have a fucking job, which forces you to work so many hours to feed me, you, and him. He sits and plays fucking video games like some child and drinks throughout the day. And when you're not here, he hits me. He's always hitting me and cursing at me, calling me names. That one day when I came home from school with bruises? Those were from him. I lied about it saying that I had gotten in a fight because I was afraid what he'd do to me. Toby witnessed it for the first time and started punching him. So we left. I couldn't take it anymore." After letting that all out, it feels like weights finally lift up off my shoulders. I sigh and lean back into my seat. Mom doesn't say anything though. I frown.

"Hello? Mom?" Then she hangs up. I take my phone from my ear and stare at it. Did I make her mad? I think to myself. I set my phone down on the table sigh again.

"You okay?" Toby asks me. I close my eyes and lean my head back. I nod my head.

"I'm not sure if she's mad at me, but that felt really good," I say to him, opening my eyes. I hear him chuckle. Our waitress comes back with our food.

"Here ya go. I hope you enjoy your meal. Is there anything else I can get for you?" She asks. We both shake our heads. She nods once.

"Well, okay then. Hollar if you need anything." She turns around and walks away. I grab a plate and place two pancakes, some eggs, and a strip of bacon on it since I wasn't that hungry after that phone call. Toby grabs three pancakes. I just chuckle and shake my head at him. As we sit and eat our food, a customer tells a waitress to turn the volume up on the TV. The news was on. The news lady starts talking.

"There's a report saying that two teens have gone missing. They're likely to be runaways. They're from (names the town Toby and Sherryn are from) and they ran two days ago, probably around 11:30 PM." Toby and I freeze and look at each other. Toby turns around and I turn my attention to the TV.

"Their names are Toby Johnson and Sherryn Davidson. They're both seventeen years old. Here is what they look like." The screen switches to a photo each of Toby and I. Toby quickly turns around.

"We have to go," he says. I give him a short nod and take a couple drinks from my water since my mouth was dry. As we get up, the screen switches back to the news lady.

"If you happen to see them, call this number immediately." I glance at Sandy, our waitress. She looks away from the TV, confused. Then she glances up at us and her eyes go wide.

"Wait!" She yells at us. We start running out of the restaurant. When we make it outside, Toby turns around and grabs my hand.

"Come on, Sherryn!" We run back to the motel to get our stuff.
