Sherryn and Toby were troublemakers.
Always have been.
- - -
They've been best friends since the third grade.
- - -
Sherryn's mom is always working at the hospital, so she's never around to see what her mom's boyfriend does to her.
Toby's parents are drug abusers and alcoholists.
- - -
Sherryn's stubborn, and Toby has anger issues, but he'll deny it every time you try to tell him.
- - -
They did something bad. They've done a lot of bad stuff before, but this one was too far.
And now they have to be on the move if they don't want to get caught.

7. SIX

Once the bell rings, indicating that lunch is over, I finally realized that Sherryn said yes to Melanie's invite. I glare at her. She gives me a confused look.

"You said yes to Melanie's invite to her party." She shrugs her shoulders, grabs her bag, and begins to walk off. I quickly run after her.

"Why would you do that?"

"Because I can already tell this is going to be a crazy week and we need to blow off some steam. You've been in a fight, I've been in a- I mean, I've been in two fights. And it's only Wednesday." I throw my head back.

"Yeah, but you know she's going to bother me all week about it and she's going to try to sleep with me." She grins.

"I know. That's why I said yes." Huh?

"Wait, you want me to sleep with her?" She smacks her forehead.

"No, you doofus. I said yes because I know you're going to try to avoid her. And I find that funny. She's going to be all over you, and she's going to try to kiss you, and she's going to try to get you drunk, and-" I cut her off.

"Stop. You're giving me a mental image and I'm about to throw up everything I just ate." She laughs. I shove her. She shoves me back. We do that for about thirty seconds before a teacher yells at us to stop. We walk into our fifth block and Sherryn groans.

"I hate Calculus." I grin.

"And I love it. Since you'll have your fun on Saturday by watching me suffer, I'm going to enjoy this moment and watch you suffer by not knowing any of the problems." She glares at me and pinches me.

"Shut up." We walk to our seats and sit down as we wait for the late bell to ring and for Mr. McCannon to start the class.

He gets up from his desk and starts the lecture. As twenty minutes go by, I feel a poke in the back of my shoulder. I turn around.

"What?" I whisper. She nods her head to her right. I turn and look.

"Look who it is. Your crazy ex." And sure enough, it's my ex-girlfriend, Amanda. We dated in my sophomore year and lasted for six months. I broke up with her because she thought I was cheating on her with Sherryn. She became paranoid and told me that I couldn't hang out with Sherryn. So I broke up with her the next day. And not in the douchebag way. I told her at school and I tried to make it private as possible but she started screaming, saying that I was cheating on her and that she loved me and that she couldn't be without me. And then she started screaming that I'm a dick and that she was going to ruin my life. Amanda turns and looks at me. She smiles and waves at me. I quickly look away. Sherryn's eyes grow wide.

"That was weird." I nod.

"Yeah. I'm not sure if I should be scared or not." Usually, whenever Amanda and I make eye contact, she's either flipping me off, making a cutting motion across her neck, or screaming "cheater!" at me. I look at her again. This time, she's already staring at me. I freeze. She just chuckles and looks away. I turn around and face the front.

As I'm taking notes off the board, I feel something hit my arm. I look down and it's a crumpled piece of paper. I look back up and look around to see who threw it. I see Chad and his other wrestling friend, Jordon, grinning at me. I glare at them and turn my attention back to my notes. I feel another object hit my arm. I stop writing and sigh before looking back at Chad and Jordon. Jordon is waving a twenty dollar bill at me and Chad is acting like he's snorting cocaine off his desk. He sits up and gives me a thumbs up. I face the front. Just ignore them, Toby. They're trying to get underneath your skin. My hands start to shake and I hear something snap. I look at my hand and realized I just broke my pencil. I feel another poke on the back of my shoulder. Then another crumpled paper hits my arm again. I turn and this time, Chad is waving the twenty dollar bill and Jordon is acting like he's smoking a joint, using a piece of rolled up paper. He puts his hand to his ear, like it's a phone and mouths, "what's your mom's number?" I place both of my hands on my desk and I clench them. Just breathe, I think.

Crumpled paper.

Crumpled paper.

I jump out of my seat, causing my chair to make a loud scraping sound against the floor and my Calculus book and notebook to fall off my desk. Everyone turns and looks at me.

"Is everything alright?" Mr. McCannon asks me. Students start whispering and pointing at me. I clench my fists even more.

"What's wrong, Toby?" I hear Sherryn ask me. My breathing gets heavy. I glance at Chad and Jordon and they're both snickering at me. I storm out of the classroom. When I'm in the hallway, I start punching the lockers. A couple minutes later, the door opens and Sherryn walks over to me.

"Dude, what's wrong?" I shake my head.

"Nothing" I mumble. She rolls her eyes.

"Seriously? You're going to tell me that when clearly it's a lie." I punch the locker again and it causes Sherryn to jump.

"What the hell, Toby?" I walk away from her.

"Leave me alone," I say. I feel her hand grab my arm.

"Toby-" I yank my arm out of her grasp.

"I said, leave me alone!" I yell. She steps back and blinks a couple of times.

"Fine. If that's what you want." Then she turns back around and walks back into the classroom. I rest my forehead against a locker. What the fuck did I do that for? I think to myself.

I decided to leave school since I only had one period left and go home. Hopefully, my dad isn't home, I think. I unlock the front door and slowly open it, peeking my head inside. It doesn't smell like drugs and it's quiet. I walk in and close it. I go to the kitchen and open the refrigerator door. All that's in it, is some nasty leftovers and a bunch of beer. I roll my eyes and slam the door shut. I go to the cabinet and notice an unopen Cosmic Brownies. I grab it and open it and take one out. As I'm eating it, the back door opens. I look up and it's my mom. She's in her work clothes. She frowns.

"What are doing here? Did school get out early?" She asks. I roll my eyes.

"What do you care?" I mumble.

"What?" I shake my head.

"Nothing." I turn and is about to walk out.

"Toby." I stop and sigh and slowly turn to look at her. She sets her work bag down and folds her hands together.

"I know that... these past couple of years, I've been a shitty mom to you. I can't speak for your father, but I am truly sorry. I'm trying to change myself. I want to be a better mother. Yes, I was grieving over your brother, but that was three years ago. I can't use that as an excuse. I hope you can forgive me and give me another chance." For a moment, I soften a little. I was always closer to my mother than Trey. He got along with Dad more. I kind of missed the times my mom and I would spend together. She ran track in high school, too, so she helped me a lot when I did it in middle school.

"Please?" She says, pleading to me. I slowly walk up to her and wrap my arms around her. She quickly returns the hug and I rest my head on her shoulder. I hear her sniff.

"I'm so, so sorry. I promise I'll be a better mother." I let go of her and she places a kiss on my cheek, causing a tear I hadn't realized slip down. She wipes the tear and smiles at me.

"I'm gonna head to my room." She nods.

"Yeah, sure." I turn around and start walking out of the kitchen.

"Love you, Toby." She calls to me. I turn around.

"Love you too, Mom." Then I head up the stairs to my room.
